Cincy didn't not embarrass themselves, not in the least.

But the bottom line is that for the third straight year, the top G5 team lost their NY6 game to an also-ran in a P5 conference. Georgia was the 4th place SEC team this year. LSU was the 4th-place SEC team when they beat UCF two years ago. That's two undefeated G5 champs beaten by also-rans. Memphis was beaten by 3rd place Penn State last year.

If G5 champs can't beat teams that finished 3rd or 4th in a P5 conference, that suggest we aren't missing anything by not having them in the playoffs. It certainly doesn't suggest we need them to be *automatically* included. If the top G5 champ is really exceptional, worthy of being ranked in the top 8, like UCF in 2017 and Cincy this year, then include them. But don't make it automatic.

If we're going to go that route then the Pathetic 12 shouldn't get an automatic berth either. How did Oregon do?

I think the point is that Georgia was down 11 key players and was the 4th place team in the SEC behind Alabama, A&M, and Florida and that the Bearcats not only lost, but didn't do to Georgia what Oklahoma did to Florida another school without any of its starting receivers and without a few other players.

Does any team which won any other conference prove their right to be in the CFP by losing to any conference's #4 finisher? No way Jose, not now, not ever! If Cincinnati had beaten Georgia by 10 or better yet 14 I think they would have a case. What they proved is that they were equal to the SEC's #4 team on a day when that #4 team was down 11 players. Now that's reality.

RE: Conference bowl records
Georgia was only down 6-7 guys; several of the guys there not going to be available opted back in. Fwiw Cincinnati was down 5 starters and a key backup defensive lineman- two of the starters were All-Americans (James Wiggins, Ahmad Gardner).

The SEC had an amazing bowl record, the only OOC games they played. All nine games were against CFP ranked teams and they won seven, including going 4-1 in NY6/Playoff bowls.

Second straight year the SEC has won 4 NY6/Playoff games.

https://www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm Of course limited data this year, but the Massey composite:

1. Big 12 43.97
2. SEC 46.62
3. Big 10 53.10
4. Indies 54.89 (helped not having UConn and NMSU)
5. Pac 12 56.28
6. ACC 59.45
7. AAC 69.06
8. SB 72.13
9. MAC 73.24
10. MWC 76.23
11. CUSA 94.70

Shows 4 of the G5 pretty close together.

To me, this shows the limitations of this year's MC, as the SEC was easily the best P5 conference, while the SBC was the best G5 conference.

Its not clear to me that the SEC was the best P5 conference, although they may have been.

I think the AAC WAS still the best G5. The Sun Belt has 10 teams, not 3.

But yes, it is limited. The MAC's ranking is based on 2 out of conference games!

For the independents, AAC, Sun Belt and CUSA, its not much more limited than normal. For everybody else, yes, it has limited reliability except within conferences.

RE: Conference bowl records
Interesting to look at the Massey composite vs. the AP. Main difference seems to be the human polls still holding those first game losses by Iowa St., Kansas St. and Kansas against the whole Big 12. Oklahoma is 2 places higher, Iowa St. 1, Texas 8, Oklahoma St. 5 and TCU 5 in the computer polls.

Northwestern, Indiana, North Carolina and Liberty are the schools with the biggest drop in the computer polls relative to the AP.

Massey Composite Final AP
1 Alabama 1
2 Ohio St. 2
3 Clemson 3
4 Oklahoma 6
5 Texas A&M 4
6 Georgia 7
7 Notre Dame 5
8 Iowa St. 9
9 Cincinnati 8
10 BYU 11
11 Texas 19
12 Florida 13
13 Iowa 16
14 Northwestern 10
15 Oklahoma St. 20
16 Coastal Carolina 14
17 Indiana 12
18 Louisiana 15
19 USC 21
20 Ball St. 23
21 Miami FL 22
22 Buffalo 25
23 North Carolina 18
24 San Jose St. 24
25 TCU 30

31 Liberty 17

RE: Conference bowl records
Interesting looking at the variability of those rankings. Texas ranged from #6 to #25. The one where they were #25 was obviously almost all on W-L. Clemson was #11. OU was #17. That systems top 10-1. Alabama, 2. Ohio St., 3. Ball St. (one poll had them #2), 4. Coastal Carolina, 5. San Jose St., 6. Cincinnati, 7. ULL, 8. BYU, 9. Texas A&M, 10. Miami (Ohio!)-they were 2-1, beating Ball St. & Akron and losing to Buffalo who was #13 in this system.

Its not clear to me that the SEC was the best P5 conference, although they may have been.

I don't see how the SEC wasn't easily the best. It played nine OOC games and won 7 of them, all against ranked opponents.

I note that of the MC computers, the Big 12 is ranked #1 by 10 of them, the SEC is ranked #1 by 16 of them. The SEC is dragged down by crazy results, while only 1 computers has the Big 12 ranked 5th or lower, six computers have the SEC ranked 5th or lower, a completely nonsensical result.

The Big 12 was good, it won two NY6 bowl games and went 4-0 overall vs other P5. But it went just 4-3 vs G5.

Bottom line: The SEC went 7-2 in FBS games, all of which were against CFP final top 25 teams. All of them.

Not counting FCS, the Big 12 went 8-3 in FBS games overall, where six where against ranked teams and 5 were not.

SEC beat the 3, 4, 8, 11, 13, 23 and 24 ranked teams in the CFP final rankings. The Big 12 beat the 7, 18, 24, and 25 teams.

Throw out Alabama, and the SEC roster of teams it beat were better than the Big 12s.

IMO, that's no comparison.
