Lorax went straight up and the only contact was what Murphy initiated. During game, I was yelling like crazy each time USF ran that ruboff play...and it was mostly successful.
My wife, My dad, and I all agreed halfway through the 2nd half, the reffs were calling contact on the perimeter, but it had to be violent to be called in the paint. That's just the way they called the game. Pretty even, but in the moment, I was pissed. They hammered us every time we went in for a bucket, but they made most of their hay with perimeter shots. That's why we got in foul trouble, and they didn't.

Both teams looked awful, quite frankly. Lomax’s hustle was a definite bright spot for us, though, and was key to pulling out the win. Not sure what offense we are running - it seems like total chaos, which is surprising for the 10th game of the year. I also watched some of the Iowa/Northwestern game yesterday - I think either of those teams would smoke us or USF.
Did you see where Tulsa beat #5 Houston last night?
DID THEY??? I watched the first 5 minutes, and turned it off thinking a Huston win was certain.

I think the offense was: Two guys stand at the top of the key. The other three cut back and forth through the paint waiting on someone to get open.
Yeah.... That's basketball. Way less sophisticated strategy than football.

Beats the hell out of 4 guys standing on the perimeter watching 1 guy dribble.

I got the same impression. Had watched the Mich St vs Wi last week and got the same impression - much more discipline, good defenses where the defenders stayed between the ball & the rim, very few TOs, great perimeter shooters & good inside games. We'd get hammered by any of those 4 schools with our chaos & TOs despite the raw talent we have.

Tulsa made 2 free throws with .1 seconds left to win by 1.
By a 60ish % FT shooter...
Good job by Tulsa there.

One has to assume that Alo has never been taught the jumpstop.
And if Penny's been his coach for so many years, makes you wonder.....

Seems no one has ever told him not to jump in the air without knowing where the ball was going first, considering he does it about 12 times every game.. although I find that incredibly hard to believe since that is PG 101.

That was a very physical game. Quinones had scratches on his neck--that dude is fearless AF. He's right there in the middle fighting for rebounds.

Alo jumps up--just like Derrick Rose used to do. lol Rose was never on the ground much though, like Alo.
Rose wold run into traffic, disappear, then jump straight up looking for tall help. lol
It would crack me up.
As for the jumpstop--I don't see it much anywhere in college..that's why it was so novel to watch last night.

All I can say is that I have coached some AAU ball and for players that have done it their entire lives it is pretty much impossible to break it seems. It is insanely frustrating. For Alo it is a product of him driving to far and having nowhere to go most of the time so he just jumps out of instinct with no real plan in mind.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that most of the times he does that, NOBODY is looking for an open spot to score the ball. The other players just stand around and watch him. At the very least a lob should be available some of the time. At the very least, someone should be finding a spot for an open three.
Baugh and Boogie drive with their heads down. At least if someone is open, Lomax can see them.

I was a shooter back in the day. Coach wanted to change my stroke but I was getting more than him so...
That scenario doesn't really fit Lomax/Penny, though. I'd rather see middle-aged Penny out there spotting up than Lomax.

The last 10 minutes reminded me of the "40 minutes of hell". If we played that hard all game---we could beat anyone . Alo reminded me of the TIGERS of old----100% effort----rare nowadays . It was a pleasure to watch him--he willed us to the win .

We scored 25 points off of turnovers and 25 fast break points...
Nowadays it is just too difficult to count on teams making that many mistakes to allow that many points off of turnovers or in transition...
We have to start scoring more effectively in the half court...Long way to go

Lester hit the game winner at 1:07
We had 14 steals and buggered the heck outta them. I think if Alo had caught fire in other games (which just might have been because Penny gave him more control and responsibility before this game) we would have won a couple other games.
Tulsa slowed us down till we seemed deadish.
I'm for controlled chaos or even out of control chaos if the results are W.
