So, Appalachian State fans....
With Petersen going to Illinois, who’s gonna get the nod for the new OC?

Don’t know but wish Tony all the best. Hoping for a win win situation. My gut tells me we win in this scenario before the Illini do. That’s a tough place to succeed at. I posed the question on Yosef’s Cabin wondering if Coach Clark might just hire a QB Coach and take over as OC? It would then free up a spot for a dedicated Special Teams coach. We had one under Drink and it proved to be a great asset. Just a thought.

What’s the beef with this guy? App’s PPG weren’t much different then what it was from 2015-2019.

RE: So, Appalachian State fans....
Most App fans I’ve seen, including myself, were very unimpressed with the play calls on the offensive side. Just didn’t feel like the appropriate adjustments were ever made to improve our players biggest chances of being successful and ultimately winning very winnable games. Too many times did we see running up the middle and getting stuck, which would go on drive after drive. Couple that with questionable pass plays as well, granted we had some opt outs and injured players, but it just didn’t make sense on the play calls

Overall it just didn’t feel like the offense was meshing well. Excited for fresh blood

Stacy Searels is going to get a hard look, IMO.

Randy Sanders too... But that's not gonna happen.

Scoreboard may look the similar to previous coordinators, but when you get used to a certain level of performance, fans can instantly spot the difference even when others can't. It'll be another magic trick to see how App will keep it in the family after watching them get pillaged of staff members every year. Did Armanti ever get into coaching? Just curious.

Hasn't yet. A decent chunk of players since 2004 have gotten into coaching though. Taylor Lamb, probably the best field general since Satterfield, will start his first year as QB coach at FCS G. Webb in the spring. He comes from a long line of coaching (Napier's old coach Bobby is Taylor's dad)

But anyone from 2005 onward doesn't have enough chops to take on the full offensive control... Yet

Do you think Taylor Lamb would run a different offense or keep the family tradition? Up the road from me is Commerce High school, and they're still running the triple option after Ray Lamb installed it in 1971. The continuity there is insane. I remember Bobby Lamb. He was very good. Got to see him coach at Mercer. That is a tough gig to succeed at.

Similar story to GS. Expectations weren’t met and a scapegoat was needed.

Not even hardly. TP's PPG was skewed because of Campbell and UNT.

I take fan complaints about play-calling with a big grain of salt in most cases but Zac Thomas regressed in a way that's not even subtle to amateurs, and Petersen was the QB coach.

App was top 25 in red zone efficiency in 2019, 100+ in 2020.

RE: So, Appalachian State fans....
I credit the struggles more to lack of WRs to stretch the field deep (Sutton opting out, Virgil being hurt) and the regression of ZT(not sure who is at fault). Like TBD above said, it's easy to blame the OC when offense is struggling.

Not sure if the average App fan realizes it or not, but we really run 2-4 running plays: Inside Zone(with QB read option), Outside Zone (which we scored 4 times with vs NT), a Jet Sweep with the slot, and at times there's a triple option look with a zone read and orbit motion. What app has success with is the different formations we run our zone out of. 1 tight 2 back, 2 tight 1 back, 1 tight H back 1 back, 1 tight 1 wing 1 back. Same zone blocking schemes, multiple looks that it comes from. App has always been run 1st, teams stacked the box and we didn't do a great job of stretching the field this year with pass.

Each loss was because of lack of execution by someone. Fumble going into the endzone vs Marshall with missed FG. ZT throwing a bad INT 4th Q when up vs Coastal, flat was wide open in the levels routes but forced the deeper throw that was picked. Fumble, INT, missed FG vs UL. Hard for me to blame Peterson on these mistakes that cost us those games.

This would be most of the reason why it was frustrating to watch, the predictability and unmoved adjustments in the second half. We didn’t come back with a different plan in the 2nd half, it was always let’s see if we can execute again what we attempted in the 1st half.

Juicy. Glad App used the asterisk season to get everything in place. Didn't even have to let anyone go.

Exactly, one thing APP fans won’t admit is Jerry Moore still has influence on how the offense is run, he taught SS and now Clark, that you throw very few passes in the middle of the field, everything is side, rollout by qb with TE dragging towards the sideline, and finally throw the ball as far as possible and hope the receiver runs under it, I think Clark basically handcuffed our OC on how creative he could be passing the ball. Next yr should be really interesting, we are loaded at wr, TE, and a Brice coming in at qb, if I was a OC interviewing for the job I would ask Clark if he is going to let me use all of the field on passing downs.

Do y’all Mountaineers have any particular names that interest you or any rumblings already about who it could be? Any time we have an opening it seems like we throw out the names of any run heavy FCS HCs or OCs who are putting up big numbers, or former staff/players who were here during the successful times.

I don't think many App fans would say he was terrible but not many would say he was great. Combine the aforementioned play calls that were frustrating along with the stats that show he's never been extremely successful (see link below) and most App fans feel we can do better. We shall see but I wish TP the best!
