Toppert's Offense

Kids showcasing their abilities not playing as a team...Privately you can say that all you want...But you shouldn't air your dirty laundry.

Penny should take the majority of the pain and criticism publicly...He should invite it by saying he needs to get better at (X,Y,Z). But he only has one criticism for himself.

Yeah, there are several things that bother me about it. Just doesnt add up..

1. year one he said basically he just let Jeremiah do his thing.. ok, how does that offense differ from year 2 or 3 (except instead of Jeremiah its whomever has the ball).

2. I have heard Penny say numerous times "ALo knows how to run my offense" and I have heard others, color analysts, assistants, etc. etc. saying the same thing about Penny depending on ALo because he knows Penny's offense so well.

a couple of other things, but I am sure anyone reading this gets the point. It seems like some revisionism going on to justify things, and shift some of the blame.

I am glad to hear him say the bigs were going to start playing inside, but I dont believe that prior to this he didnt want them playing outside. Everytime Thomas comes into the games he starts jacking 3's like he is Reggie Miller and Penny never says a word or disciplines him for it.

The offense 100% looks like a better offense when Lomax is running it, but he isn't a threat offensively. If we can get Baugh and Boogie to run it the same way, between the three of them we could probably cobble together decent point guard play. I just don't see other teams defending Baugh or Boogie the same way. They know to constantly pressure them. They don't have the luxury of setting up 28FT from the basket the way Lomax does.

What a mess.

I will give him a pass on Lance.

I am going to say that Lance is a better shooter in practice than he is in the games. That is the only logical reason that is allowed.

Maybe Thomas is trying to be like Wiseman...who is shooting 83% from 3. He's only played 24 mins so far and is 4-5 from 3

Ok folks, tell me exactly what Alo is going to do differently in the "East offense" besides getting more minutes?

Exactly.

Just to point out, I am not trying to start another ALo argument...

just saying that supposedly ALo has been running Penny offense since he arrived... but how could he be running Penny offense if Penny is saying just now that he has not introduced Penny offense to the team.

We just need him to get the scorers the ball where they can score and stay out of the way.

We should not be counting on him to carry us...

Just tell Brooks "offense is fluid".
I hear that works on most things.

Lance was told before the Auburn game to stop playing Captain Corner and jacking 3's. He's shot one 3 since then, and was removed right after.

Yet the contempt from several here that you would question Penny & Alo not be the experts. Do you recall the East offense with Wiseman, MD & Alo? It was Alo dribble penetration, shoot or dish to either of two guys who were generally better than anyone else on the floor & occasionally Wiseman & MD playing some high-low with the same no off-ball movement we see now. I'm not encouraged beyond Penny's apparent acknowledgement that the current offense isn't working.

Did I miss the quote where Penny said he doesn’t understand the offense? That doesn’t really pass the smell test, but whatever. It’d make more sense if the quote was about the players not getting it. Either way, the offense has looked like trash and is in desperate need of a fix.

Sounds like Penny admitting of being derelict of duty. ...AND did he say they really didn't have a zone/press in S. D.....almost every single thing that he just said --was---really incredible and telling .

I swear to god you people just ***** to ***** and would ***** about anything...

I heard nothing in that interview that remotely disturbs me.

I heard a coach owning his job and being real about the losses, challenges, personalities, and the complexity of the challenge for his team.

I think Mr. Hardaway gets more of a pass from some of you than he is getting. Really he is doing fine. This is year 2. We are starting to treat him the way we did Yates and Finch. And look what that unfair treatment got them. You know what happened to Finch. For Christs sake; was Yates responsible for Bradley and Kilzer's off court behavior or Gun's untimely death?

******* cannibales... we eat our own; raw and uncooked.

I really don't care about all the drama, I just care that he is finally admitting his NBA game isn't doable for these young men and he is going to change it.

RE: Penny says he's changing offense because ......
I don't hear all the big brouhaha in that interview.

Cody Toppert was in charge of the offense, what I assume is supposed to be a high level offense since it is described as an NBA offense. Maybe Penny was unsure how his middle school / high school / AAU offense would work out in D1 so he didn't use it, and maybe now that he has been on the sideline for a couple of seasons he thinks it will work OK. (or perhaps is simply of the opinion that it can't be worse than what we have been doing)

Penny wanted to focus on defense. Now maybe he is seeing that we're comfortable with what he wants and feels he can divert attention to offense. The fact that he asked questions of the coach who is supposedly the staff expert on the offense is no big deal to me. It has been a common refrain on here that he needed to bring in an experienced X's and O's coach, so one must assume that he would be asking questions of that "expert" too.

Penny was so good of an offensive player that he could simply play and do his thing and make everybody around him more productive. I can understand how he can't simply "vulcan mind meld" his insight and instincts and court vision into other players and how he might be searching for something that works. Jeremiah could simply play and do his thing, but no one since him has been able to do that.

RE: Penny says he's changing offense because ......
Have to wonder if we are just moving deck chairs around on a sinking ship.

OK, maybe the other offense wasn't right for the players he has.

BUT they were not executing it anyway.

Will changing the offense suddenly cause the players to actually run the offense?

Will it stop the players from spending more time blaming each other during a time out than listening to the coach.

Most of our turnover come from NOT running the offense or doing stupid things with the ball.

Will changing offenses change that in any way?

Will it cause them to hit their jumpers or make the bunnies they have been missing.

We are 26th out of 329 in offensive rebounds, so is lack of offensive rebounding really an issue?

Total rebounds we have gone from 18th last year to 10th this year.

We have gone from 138th to 26th in offensive rebounding from last year to now.

Is the offense the reason we have gone from 52nd last year to 81st this year in scoring defense?

We have gone from 1st in FG% defense last year to 46th.
