If you could form a new conference to move past the AAC
(12-28-2020 08:50 AM)ATTALLABLAZE Wrote:  The only dumb move is not adding Liberty. They would have wasted CUSA this season.

I like MTSU but they don’t travel well to their home stadium much less the road. Basketball at least beat us in attendance but then again so has most every other program in the country that their fans care about basketball.

CUSA was a great idea turned horrible by piss poor management by CUSA and some of its member institutions. If we don’t get the invite by the end of next season it may be time for an airport meeting. Best of the G5 not in the AAC. I want substance not a flash in the pan.

The problem with Liberty is they are a ticking time bomb to the next PR disaster (and the next, and the next, etc.) whether they actually deserve or not. The media is just waiting to jump all over them and, like it or not, being “associated” with them in a conference will drag everyone into it (“Given the Liberty President’s latest comment/actions, do you still plan to play them in football/basketball/et. al.)

With Falwell gone Liberty has the opportunity to change their public image. The big issue now is academics.

It would be incredibly stupid not to include the Flames.

As far as location of teams regional is nice but if we were getting three teams in the ncaa and competing fir New Year’s Day bowls no June would care if we had sone outlier teams.

If you disagree you gonna tell me you wouldn’t turn down a Big 12 invite? I thought so.

At the end of the day regional teams and I am an advocate for it but doesn’t mean Richard if there is no success.

Of course we wouldn’t turn down the big 12. We wouldn’t turn down the pac whatever it is either. Currently, that’s fantasy land. We want to be in the AAC, and the conference fits us in many ways. If not, I think the best regional conference we can create makes the most sense. Having a team in Miami, UTEP, and Boise makes zero sense to me.

It would make sense if they were successful and helped fill our stadium. If FAU brought 4,000 every time they came and another couple hundred for basketball and were a perineal top 25 team no one would complain. That’s my point. I’m all for regional unless it makes sense. If BYU wanted to join us tomorrow in an airport league (they won’t but it’s an example) we would be foolish to say no. They travel. They bring buts in the seats and yes to long road games because they have alumni and fans everywhere.

That said sure I’m for regional but just not for the sake of doing it. The teams need to bring something to the table like Marshall. I love MTSU but they don’t travel well to their own stadium much less on the road. Would they be worth adding? Maybe but not over a Marshall or even Troy. Troy fans may be the ignorant versions of Auburn fans but they travel for football. They still don’t know they have a basketball team though. Lol

The AAC is the best fit for us. But as much as it pains me to admit it, we do need a Plan B. That probably involves some combination of current CUSA, Belt, and independents. Ugh.

Florida is very important for recruiting. Especially south Florida

The next Boise or BYU fan I meet in Alabama will be the first. I just hate the thought of either of those teams faltering in the future and then what? Are UAB and Boise going to become rivals just because they play in the same conference? If so, why aren’t we rivals with UTSA?

I care more about beating Troy or USA or Memphis or hell, Louisiana this year, than I’ve ever cared about any UAB-UTSA game. I’m all for the strongest conference we can get in, but just randomly throwing teams together based off of current strength isn’t my favorite option.

It’s going to be interesting watching the HBC play in the Spring. We may not like it but you could see the P5 playing in the Fall and everyone else in the Spring. Baseball and Basketball ratings are down and soccer is soccer

You should get out more. I’ve met both. Over 16,000 in the south but they travel from long distances to games. Again not saying they would join. Just making a point. In fact the last time we played them in basketball in Birmingham we drew around 14,000

The conference as a whole underperformed this year. It doesn’t mean next year will be the same. I trust our coaches evaluation of talent over alleged recruiting experts. Winning relevant OOC games will position ourselves for whatever is ahead.

Nailed it. People have short memories. It wasn't long ago U.La.La was god-awful, but people want them now, along with Coastal and Liberty, who were in D-1AA not long ago. Picking schools who are hot right now can be dangerous- they might tank once their current coach gets hired away. So. Miss used to run C-USA, now look at them. It's kinda like when you're getting serious with your girlfriend, you need to see what her mom looks like. Want to know how she might age. How will Liberty, or Coastal, or any other team age long term.

Schools that have fans that travel are a premium. Liberty might be that type of program.
We need to travel to road conference games when possible to increase our value to a conference. All sports included.

RE: If you could form a new conference to move past the AAC
Regardless of sport conferences, UAB is -and will always remain - in the state of Alabama. That means that we will continue to have a state around us that has a failing reputation in its region. Right now it is the only southeast sunbelt state projected to lose a US House seat (down to 6) after the new census is finished. (At the end of WW2, Alabama had 9 seats and now has 7. Texas is projected to add 3 and other regional states are holding steady or adding one or two.) We have several counties on the list of America's poorest with Wilcox leading that list. Saying over and over that in sports that doesn't matter doesn't make it so. Many of our most loyal BlazerTalkers have moved to other states for job advancement - a trend that continues. Of the 9 living children in my family, only two live in Alabama.

Of the 600+ billionaires listed a few years ago by Forbes, only one - Mrs Harbert - lived in Alabama. We do have some wealthy families in Alabama, but many of them tend to gravitate toward AU and UA - the big fish in the biggest pond.

MTSU doesn’t travel well to their own stadium much less anywhere else.

Ok, so assuming no AAC and we can do the best of the rest, what are your 12 schools?

VCU doesn't have football, unless they just started it.
