1. In 2015 TH was on the Vikings 53-man roster and suffered no injuries in preseason games. He did not play in the regular season.

2. In 2016 the first injury resulted in TH missing most of the season, but it was a non-football related injury, as likely we all recall. Kicking doors does not count toward being prone to injury on the field.

3. In 2017, after an injury settlement with the Vikings due to a concussion, TH was picked up by Houston where he suffered another concussion in his first game. He had earlier suffered a "mild" concussion at ODU in 2013 for a total of three concussions. Multiple concussions can lead to mental health complications in the long term. That is exactly the reason that concussion protocols have been established to protect the players, and in no way am I intending to minimize his history with concussions. But there is good news. TH has not had a concussion since December of 2017, and his time out of football for the last two years has provided absolute relief from any exposure to further brain trauma during that time.

4. The injury at Carolina in 2018 was a torn triceps -- real, painful and requiring surgery. But TH returned to complete the game despite the injury.

5. The injury at WTF was an AC sprain -- painful, but not enough to keep him out of the game. In fact, he did not even miss a series or part of a series.

6. He played four years of Division I football, without missing a game. His one "mild" concussion happened against Liberty and he stayed in the game. Concussion symptoms showed up later and he was diagnosed with a "mild" concussion. With a bye week before the Pitt game, he did not miss a game while following ODU's concussion protocol.

So, here is the reality that dispels the myth.

1. Over two years as the starter, TH never missed a high school game due to injury that I could find.
2. Despite one mild concussion, TH did not miss one game at ODU over almost a four full seasons as the starting QB.
3. During his time in the NFL, TH had only one occasion to leave a game due to injury and not be able to return -- and that was due to the concussion protocol.

What all of this does mean is that three specific realities now exist for Taylor Heinicke.

1. Over five years he was never able to successfully establish in the NFL what we all knew -- that he is a talented QB with a remarkable skill set.
2. Through a false narrative, he has been saddled with an unwarranted reputation for being fragile and injury prone.
3. Saturday night, when given the opportunity, he was able demonstrate conclusively that he belongs in the NFL.

TH has played in 9 games and suffered an injury in 3 of them. He was injured in both games he started (might have started more I just remember the Panthers game and this past fame) and played heavy reps. No one is saying the guy can’t walk and chew gum without being injured, but let’s be serious he has yet to play serious reps without getting injured and that is something coaches and GMs look at

I read that injury sometimes takes months to heal.

He's shown that he can play the game. Now he just has to show that he can remain on the field. It might mean taking a few less risks and also realizing that he may have to throw the ball out of bounds a few more times than he'd like in order to live for the next play. I'm sure that his always hanging by a thread and trying to make a good showing is pushing him to make every play a positive one even at the increased risk of getting injured.
If it was his throwing arm he would probably require surgery to regain full capacity. I've had the same injury to my throwing arm and it has not been the same as it was before the injury. My collar bone sticks up like a sore thumb. Every time he got hit after the injury he risked making it worse. But he was determined. You could see the pain on his face though.

Yep, and you could see it in his walk down the hallway... his left arm dangling sadly like a robin with a broken bird wing.

I was certain he was done for the night.

As a HTTR fan, it was the most exciting end to a season I can recall since 1991. We have hope.... and we have Taylor Heinicke leading the way.

Welcome aboard all you Giants, Cowboys, and non-WFT fans... Join the bandwagon, we'll make room!

Is rooting for him to play well while that team loses games count as being on the bandwagon? If so, count me in and I'm batting a 1.000!

You could say the same for Cam Newton, and just about every Washington QB since Kirk Cousins

1. The injury Saturday night was a strain. There was pain. He had it checked, and he came right back into the game. He did not miss one offensive snap. That happens all the time in the NFL and should not be considered significant.

2. The injury in Houston was a concussion. The concussion protocol requires that he leave the game. This happens all the time in the NFL and should not be considered significant (unless and until it becomes a factor due to multiple repeat occurrances -- and if that happens, TH should leave football for his long-term mental health).

3. The injury in Carolina was significant and required surgery, although TH did tough it out, reenter and complete the game.

So, in reality, there is only one truly significant injury, and TH would not be the first QB to suffer an injury of that severity and continue his career. For those who make personnel decisions in the NFL, I cannot believe this "injury record" is going to be a showstopper for TH given the skill set he demonstrated Saturday night.

Strain?

I read somewhere that he suffered a separated left shoulder and that the injury can take several months to heal and/or recover from. He said in his post game interview when asked that when he landed after his touchdown run he felt a pop in his shoulder. Not sure what an AC injury means but that is what they are also calling it.

To me a significant injury is one that keeps a player from playing. While Taylor remained in the game, we don't know for sure that had the team won he would have played this week with the injury. Given that Smith may have been able to go with his leg and the 3rd QB has never played in an NFL game and probably doesn't know the offense very well, Taylor may have had to step in regardless and hope for the best.

The injury was to his non throwing shoulder, but still an injury. All speculation, but I’m sure a qb can play through the pain, as TH did, as long as it is not on their throwing shoulder.

Grade 1 sprain requires ice, immobilization, some physical therapy. He could play with it next week if necessary, will be good as new in few weeks.

Yes, I thought we all were already aware that it was to his left - non throwing- shoulder. As I mentioned before, he may well have played had they advanced. We don't know that for sure though.

RE: Heinicke in for WFT...
Brett Favre has an inch and 10 pounds on TH and has the consecutive starts record. I know he was hooked on PKs and played through a lot of pain, but not major injuries. Not sure he ever even got a concussion. Not like he didn't play hard, sacrifice his body and take hits. Not sure how much pure luck has to do with it.

Not sure about the concussion part. Seems like I saw him on TV talking about having cognitive issues related to his time playing in the NFL. Did they even have concussion protocols when he played or did they just play through getting your bell rung?

Edit: Just looked it up and found this related to Brett Favre and concussions -

What have you been smoking? Drew Brees is listed at 6’ 0”. He is taller than TH. Taylor is 5’11” at best. Taylor weighs 205, soaking wet with winter clothes. Favre is 6’2” and played at 233lbs.

I know he was hooked on PKs and played through a lot of pain, but not major injuries. Not sure he ever even got a concussion. Not like he didn't play hard, sacrifice his body and take hits. Not sure how much pure luck has to do with it.

What have you been smoking? Drew Brees is listed at 6’ 0”. He is taller than TH. Taylor is 5’11” at best. Taylor weighs 205, soaking wet with winter clothes. Favre is 6’2” and played at 233lbs.

Wiki lists TH as 6’1” and 210 and Favre as 6’2” and 221.

It’s pretty cool that we have the official NFL height/weight guy on our very own forum!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ron rolled with smith/Allen next year. He just doesn’t know any better. Heinicke is a much better back up/starter option than allen. Assume they trade or draft a qb.

TH won the Panthers backup job over Allen in 2018, then the reverse happened in 2019, plus the Panthers drafted Will Grier and TH was cut. Allen was the new shiny object for Panther fans in 2019 when he came in for the injured Cam Newton, but then crashed back to reality. After the events of 2020, it will be interesting to see what the WFT decides about Allen vs. TH.

Rivera had Heinicke over Allen in Carolina...

Wouldn't be surprised to see them battle it out again.
