Pete Lembo to South Carolina hurts
Mentioned in another thread but deserves its own. We will miss Lembo. Not only for his genius with special teams but the head coach mentality that helped Silverfield in his first year as a head coach.

Where do you find another like him without missing a step.

Or was the genius in the talent?

One thing he has always done was to not just have special teams players but to put some of your best players on special teams. Alabama and a handful of other teams do this as well.

it's no different than Dickey before him...I'd lean on Mike MacIntyre (since he seems to be staying), then bring in someone like Zac Barton who's had Kent State special teams doing well and has coached at Memphis before.

Actually, surprising considering how far off our return teams were this year compared to years past.

It was a good time strategically, for him to cash in. Our return game was no good this year.

For the same reason as our running game...missing players. Gibson last year. Pollard before that.

No, just a number of bad decisions by those back to return kicks.

RE: Pete Lembo to South Carolina hurts
It wasn't just the returns. Yeah, we missed home run threats - although we still had a few on the roster.
Punting and kicking took a step back this year.
We muffed more punts this year than in any I can recall.
We made more poor decisions about fielding punts inside the 10 than any time I can recall.
Spec Teams got worse this year in just about every facet.
So, I was glad Lembo stuck around last year. But I'm not devastated to see him go now.
Coach Mac has more HC experience for CRS to lean on. And he can get a youngish recruiter to work Spec Teams.

Yeah, Calvin Austin has issues catching the football. I thought Patterson did okay this season. I only say okay because he was exceptional last season. I also agree that not having Gibson and Claybrooks hurt us drastically. Pollard was out before Lembo came here.

Losing Norvell hurt our special teams more than anything.

I don't think losing Lembo matters. Players matter, on special teams maybe more than anywhere else.

Our coverage teams actually improved this year. Our kick coverage team was 18th. Punt returns and coverage mid-pack.

Also without spring practice, there is limited practice time and special teams usually get the short end of that deal.

Youth, youth, youth. Young guys make mistakes. Young guys timing is off. Young guys don’t see the field.

I agree with you. Good coaches make a big difference. But if Silverfield can make the right hire they will be fine. Silverfield has to choose someone who definitely knows what they are doing. We have to replace our PK next season. Its a very important position. Also I wonder about how much they can pay this coach. The athletic department had to take out that $10 million loan. They will have to be frugal, which means they can't pay big money for the position.

Kick return defense was ranked high because Riley kicks touchbacks 80% of the time.

Touchbacks are not factored into return defense, only those that there is a return.

RE: Pete Lembo to South Carolina hurts
Some people say that special teams is a third of the game. If it isn't it is pretty damn close to it. Limbo will be missed. It is important for CRS to recruit the right coach. Field position is often determined by ST and the place kicker has been one of the top scorers for some time now. When the special teams started getting great the Tigers started winning 8 or more games a season.

I didn't realize that touchbacks are not factored. That is an impressive ranking. I would always put emphasis on the special teams coaching position. Good special teams play can win/lose you a game or two each season. I really liked Lembo's calm demeanor and head coaching experience.
