I suspect we'll see more of that- say a DePaul gets another out break- I could easily see them bagging the season.

So over 100 football teams can make it through a season with 6 or 7 times as many players as a basketball team, but they can't? What piece are we missing?

We suck. Cancel the season.

Quote:The Duke Blue Devils have gotten off to a disappointing start to the 2020 college basketball season. They’ve already lost twice on their home court through four games, and Coach K is already changing his stance on playing the season in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the season, Mike Krzyzewski was adamant that the NCAA needed to hold a postseason tournament this year after canceling in March. But after Duke’s slow start, Coach K is now questioning whether the season should even continue. Are Krzyzewski’s comments really keeping student-athlete health in mind, or are they just stemming from Duke’s early struggles?

We suck. Cancel the season.

RE: Duke WBB ends season
I guess I am not understanding why they are cancelling the entire season. I am not minimizing COVID. I know it's bad for a lot of people. However, it looks like they have had 2 positives. OK, so shut it down for a week or two and see what happens. I mean, who knows what is going to happen 3 months from now. The entire team may be vaccinated by then, who knows. Why take away the opportunity for these girls to play for the entire year. No one knows what it's going to look like by Feb or March, so why not leave the window open to play later. I mean pretty much everyone realizes that pretty much anyone might have to temporarily cease operations until they go through protocols. Were they not willing to do that? Or were there some outside influences.

This would make more sense if Duke chose to end their men's basketball season, or all winter sports altogether, too. Only canceling one program is a bizarre and questionable decision. How are the risks to one program greater than another within the same school?

I would challenge the ACC to count all the forfeited games as losses.

There were a lot of unreported outbreaks. Supposedly nearly the entire LSU football team caught it. This may become a legal issue in the future if some players develop conditions as a result of Covid infection. Schools are well aware of that. Football went forward because most of the staff have contracts that are paid regardless and the potential lost revenue was significant. For women's sports and all sports other than FB and MBB the cash flow from operations is negative, so the risk tolerance is much lower. The same school that will play football and men's basketball with multiple incidents of Covid-19 will quickly shut down any other sport with the first incident

Almost sounds like a potential Title IX lawsuit waiting to happen, Stu. Almost

You've summed it up nicely.
That's my take on it too.

Not just women's sports, but all men's which are not Football or Basketball.

It's about revenue and it always was. They only restarted a few women's sports as cover because of title IX. And yes there is some risk. But it's a revenue versus expenses situation.

But you point out a huge problem for a related issue in the near future. Title IX will pose huge problems for schools trying to pay athletes. The reality is the payments will be for bringing in revenue. But there is literally zero revenue for women's sports, except perhaps UConn Basketball (I'm sure there are a few non-FB, non MBB programs that actually pay their way and then some on the landscape, but not more than a handful). Schools Athletic Departments have to comply with federal rules that do not fit the reality of Football and Men's Basketball, which pay for everything else; namely that athletics are the entertainment business like movies and music recordings. Your pay and value are determined by your sales. But Title IX and other rules the school athletic departments must follow have no concept of this reality. I don't know how you square that round peg.

On the surface, this is a major head-scratcher — unike how the most hot and popular sophomore cheerleader at a certain high school turned down the prom dance invite offer from the acne-riddled and chinless young Bill Dazzle (a classic high school loser with the ladies at the time).

On a serious note, I don't understand this decision.
