RE: Grant Gunnell
I little more information on Gunnell and Curry
Gunnell attended St. Pius X High School in Houston, Texas. During his career, he set the Texas high school records for passing touchdowns (195) and passing yards (16,108).Gunnell committed to the University of Arizona to play college football. Grant was a USA Today All American, second team his senior year. He was a MaxPreps Junior All American. He was a MaxPreps Sophomore All American and MaxPreps Sophomore Co-Player of the Year. He was a MaxPreps Freshman All American second team. He was a US Army All American Bowl Player of the Year finalist. He earned the Ford Built Tough Player his Junior year. He was a first team all state selection his Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years.
Underclass evaluation: Strengths: Nice measurables for a pocket passer and moves very well for a taller QB. Has very good height, strength and mobility. A good decision maker in his reads and progressions. Stands in the pocket well and will deliver the ball under pressure. Over-the-top release. Areas of Improvement: Above average arm strength. Limited experience under center. Needs to get his lower body into his throws more consistently. Pushes the ball a bit. Not a dynamic runner. Bottomline: Gunnell will be a nice fit in a pro-style offense. He possesses some nice tools and size. Needs to be protected and get the ball out on time to be at his best.
JALEN CURRY
"Curry set a Texas state record with 26 individual receptions in his St. Pius X squad’s 53-42 victory against Concordia Lutheran. The four-star junior Florida State commit (to Jimbo Fisher) stands 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds and has phenomenal athleticism. He is ranked 20th among Class of 2019 recruits from the state of Texas, and comes in anywhere between 11 and 21 in the list of top wide receivers." So he originally committed to FSU and switched to Arizona. Curry had offers from Auburn, Penn State, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Nebraska and many others.
Big-bodied outside receiver with impressive height and overall build. Broad-shouldered. Possesses enough space to continue adding bulk and strength at the college level. Owns a large catch radius. Great production at the high school level when healthy, but missed more than half of senior season with a hand injury. Ample experience being used in the short, intermediate, and vertical passing games. Knows how to sit down in open space underneath. Uses size well to shield defenders from the ball. Showed noticeable improvement in run-after-catch ability during senior season. Can improve quick-twitch explosiveness, including get-off at the line of scrimmage and vertical long speed. Possesses high ceiling as red-zone ball-winner, but can improve high-pointing acumen and consistency. Should more often exploit size advantage against defensive backs in 50-50 situations. Needs to show more over-the-top playmaking ability. Faces a notable jump in competition going from Texas private school to Power Five level. Potential to develop into NFL draft prospect.
Athletic Background
2017: Set a state record with 26 receptions in an October regular-season game. ... Moved from Stafford High School to nearby St. Pius X High School in Houston before his junior season. ... 2016: Earned second-team all-district honors as a sophomore at Stafford HS. (NOTE: Previous story I read said he and Gunnel had played together since 9th grade and this may refute that comment).
