With all those pay out games the basketball team may very well be keeping the school alive.

For sure, Chicago State needs all the help it can get to stay alive.

17 games against D-1 schools in a month??? A school with 60 students?

Yes, those checks are probably keeping the school alive.

Hope they get some easier competition later in the season. Also hope they can get into the NCCAA tournament.

I don’t know, these kids might be having a blast. I suspect they don’t take themselves as seriously as NBA or NCAA prima donnas.

7 games in 8 days...via van... with a 3-7 hour drive between schools...sleeping 4 to a room...freaking suicidal. If this was the NBA, the player's association would have sued weeks ago.

That's quite the road trip. After the back-to-back in Charleston on 12/8-9, they went back to Atlanta. Then, they played in:
12/12 Lake Charles, LA
12/14 Clinton, SC
12/15 Statesboro, GA
12/17 Lynchburg, VA
12/18 Atlanta vs Georgia State (got to sleep in their own beds)
12/19 DeLand, FL
12/20 Statesboro, GA (again)
12/21 Miami, FL

I wonder what the payout for these games is? Combine the fact that Carver is a school at the lowest of levels (low buy rate to begin with) and that there are little to no crowds allowed at these games, and the guarantees for these games can't be much.

This would be a good documentary.

Not sure if I'd say they're having an absolute blast when they're traveling constantly by van and probably dining/lodging on a shoestring, though the players and staff seem to have the right attitude about it. No one joins a basketball team at a Bible college smaller than plenty of university lecture halls unless they know what they're getting into, unlike the NBA-minded whiners at Kentucky

Getting to play basketball against D-1 teams when you probably thought you were done after high school? I'm sure it's frustrating on one hand, but on the other hand, getting to play in D-1 arenas against very talented teams is an experience. I'd have loved to have gone out and pitched against some D-1 teams, even if they lit me up (and they would have).

Maybe, but the dozens of hours squeezed into an Econoline adds up in a hurry, especially if you're 6-6 or so.

Who are these “very talented teams” you speak of? I doubt they’ve played anyone who will be seeing the tournament.

They’re playing D1 talent, but don’t overstate how good that is. They aren’t getting pounded by Duke, Villanova, Kentucky, and the Gonzaga’s of D1. They’re getting thumped by the likes of some who may be at the bottom of the NET rankings by season end.

What’s kind of sad for Carver is that if they played one of these top D1 schools, they might be subject to more mercy than they’ve gotten from some of these other teams. These bad teams Carver faces finally get a night to take out frustrations on someone, and that’s Carver. That is not fun in the least. And not even in an ironic, funny way to tell friends, family, and future generations.

Basketball's version of the "College of Faith", the football team without a school behind it. I still think this is tailor-made for an movie.

There is one tournament worthy school in there too in Liberty. In a normal year, these schools would be paying MEAC and SWAC schools to take this beating.

I’m sure the Carver guys are tired, but it’s all temporary. I’m sure they are also having a ton of fun and know that they are doing something they’ll always be able to look back on fondly.

Carver has scheduled like this before, just not so many games. So these guys signed on knowing they would be playing D1 sacrifice games.

I get it. Theyre playing games like 4 straight nights. Or 7 in 8 days. Thats the rough part.

Theyre also getting spanked by Kennesaw St and Presbyterian. Its generous to call those D1 teams.
