Montgomery Bowl: FAU vs Memphis
This makeshift bowl substituting for the Fenway Bowl features an intriguing matchup, AAC stalwart Memphis vs CUSA standout FAU.

Both seem to have gotten worse as the season progressed, but Memphis has more talent, so I expect a Tigers win.

True story: FAU scored the same amount of points on Georgia Southern 2 weeks ago that Louisiana Tech scored today. Put all your money on Memphis.

RE: Montgomery Bowl: FAU vs Memphis
Does anybody know what targeting is?

Memphis player leads with the head on a basically defenseless receiver and hits him helmet to helmet in the back of the head, jerking his head. Memphis player on the other side leads with the head on the defenseless receiver and hits him helmet to helmet on the other side and is called for targeting. Guy is down for about 5 minutes.

Call is reversed on replay. Announcers were talking about "launching" but leading with the helmet is supposed to be targeting.

There are criteria like leading with the crown of the helmet, but bottom line is that it is just up to the subjective judgment of whoever is in the booth. Different booth refs will view the same play different ways, just like one ref might see a particular play as pass interference and another might not.

I know in the Big 12 they call it a lot stricter.

But then there is about a 5 yard difference between a late hit out of bounds in the Big 12 and the SEC. In the SEC they don't call it until you are past the white-and sometimes not even then. And in the Big 12 there is virtually no such thing as holding on a passing play. In the SEC there is virtually no such thing as holding on a running play.

In the ACC there is no such thing as holding against a Clemson DL.

There hasn't been many holding calls against an opposing OL since Christian Wilkins was a sophomore. The year we had Wilkins, Ferrell, Lawrence, and Bryant they drew like single digit numbers of holding calls. I'll have to look and see if I can find the clip but someone posted a video once where all four were being blatantly held on a play and there was no flag.
