President of Coastal Carolina Sends CFP a Letter
And he's not wrong---

Incoming Coastal Carolina president Michael T. Benson wrote an open letter to the College Football Playoff Committee and its chair, Iowa AD Gary Barta, criticizing the “lack of fairness” and “absence of character” in the current college football postseason that “must be addressed.”

The letter calls for an “equality of opportunity” for schools from the Group of Five and criticizes the “flawed logic” that ended with Coastal’s No. 12 ranking and Cincinnati (9-0) finishing No. 8, which he said left them “absolutely flabbergasted.”

“I can’t help but think what might have been this season had all FBS programs been given the same equality of opportunity,” Benson wrote in a letter obtained by Yahoo Sports. He added: “Just think about that: Football is the only sport where the deck is stacked insurmountably against those who have the inevitable classification of “Group of Five” before toe hits the leather each fall.”

RE: President of Coastal Carolina Sends CFP a Letter
He’s absolutely right and I’m glad he is calling them out for both Coastal and Cincinnati. The P5 and CFP committee was brilliant (brilliantly evil) in giving a single bid to all G5 conferences. Each season it pits us against each other and it keeps us from uniting for the common good of all G5 (and all of College Football IMO).

Momentum is definitely shifting for expansion, but I fear we get expansion to 8 with no guaranteed spot for G5 programs. That would result in the exact situation we currently face-committee manipulating the rankings to put teams in they want and keep out teams they don’t want. Expansion MUST include an autobid for P5 Conference Champs and the top ranked G5 champ.

I'd add a provision for automatic inclusion if a team has an undefeated season and is conference champion.

I saw somewhere and initially liked "top 5 ranked conference champs" get auto bids.

This year that would include Cincinnati. But not Coastal due to lost-to-K-State Oklahoma being overrated after avenging their second loss by beating ISU who lost to ULL. I didnt go back.

I didnt go back to look at how that would have impacted UCF in 17 or 18 or Houston in 15, or even WMU in '16 (FYI the sanity check would have been "does this exclude WMU? Any right answer does. Suck it brovol.")

And the committee woth all the failings of flawed and broken humanity would just jigger things to keep it all in the priveleged-five club

This subject has been beaten to death, nevertheless...In any expansion I would say "top 6 ranked conference champions" and however many at-large. That would give a nod to the P5 and probably get the support of the B1G and Pac-12. In a few years I could see the AAC and Sun Belt getting 2 of the bids if the selection committee is overhauled.

I see that third at large bid being BIG for the autonomy conferences..."top 6 ranked conference champions" looks a lot to them like an autobid for AAC or G4s, in that both those schemes take away the third at-large bid.

"top-5-ranked conference champs" opens the door for us (or maybe even a SunBelt or mwc) without outright trying to take their lunch money.

IMO, this letter takes a lot of chutzpah, given that just four seasons ago, Coastal Carolina was in FCS - a division that has an NCAA-run all inclusive playoff system. Coastal freely chose to move from that paradise of procedural parity to FBS, knowing full well that FBS has no such system, and yet now they are complaining about it?

It's like me, an avid meat-eater, choosing to attend a dinner plainly advertised as "vegan", then whining at the table that there's no meat on my plate. Mind-boggling ....

To me, thats like whining that they credit Coastal Carolina touchdowns as six full points, despite the fact Coastal has only been FBS for a few years. How long they have been FBS is irrelevant. You're actually exhibiting the EXACT snobbish bias his letter is calling out.

Agree, and the top seeds should go to the undefeated teams, because teams with a loss shouldn't be able to earn an FBS championship unless they defeat the remaining undefeated teams.

If they want to allow more 1-loss teams in, they should expand the CFP.

The P5 - - what a bunch of primadonnas!

I would guess since Coastal has won a baseball national title under a fair system, it gives them credibility to suggest that football should also be governed under a fair system.

The problem I have with their credibility is they are complaining about something they just willingly joined four years ago and had to know going in what the structure of the sport was. If they found it distasteful, they should have stayed in FCS, where they have what Coastal is looking for. It just smells of .... something. Maybe "entitlement", as in "I know you've been doing things this way for 120 years, but here we are now, so give us what we want!".

Coastal president backing Cincy and buttering up to the AAC... Must be vying for spot #12 03-wink04-cheers

In all seriousness, his quote in the op is completely accurate and it's great to see other presidents begin to call the system out. It's tyrannical at this point and needs reform

If they were the only ones pissing and moaning and/or didn't have a right to complain, I would agree with you. Since they're hopping on the bandwagon of teams that were screwed by the CFP committee and are making noise, I don't view it as entitled but more, "the wise thing to do." Lol. Might as well shoot their shot while they still have a chance.

They've never finished .500 before this season, so one could call it a little opportunistic. But again, might as well make some noise while they have an opportunity to.
