We just put 20 guys on the all Conf team. We have 3 invites to major All star games. We have won 2 of last three conference championships. We have statistically the best Oline in our history, with more depth than ever before. Let’s don’t make uneducated statements like this!

I respect you greatly OldDragon but I still have to disagree. If our recruiting is improved why do we only have one post-Return player on NFL rosters (Ant Rush)? Let's see if guys like Watkins and Smith actually get drafted.

We are winning with about the same talent Callaway and McGee had on the roster. We do have much better coaching but we also play much weaker competition.

Look at our league in these bowl games. CUSA is a half step above FCS. If we dropped to the Southern Conference we might have even more on the All-conference team.

This only year 4 of #TheReturn. We had to load up with JUCO players so that we wouldn’t get killed when we returned, and the classes are finally balanced out. It takes time to get players in the NFL. I do agree that our league is crap.

Hope that he gets healthy and stays that way for a full calendar year, even though he's been injured on and off since high school and hasn't started a full season yet at UAB. I don't see a true freshman like Mehrotra seeing much playing time so our starter and back ups will be the same as the last two seasons unless we snag a transfer.

I guess we'll keep on doing what we've been doing and hope for different results.

You mean you don’t want to win the west every year and the championship more often than not

No, I do not. I don't want UAB to keep winning CUSA Worst every year and keep playing for the CUSA title. Then enduring ridiculousness like being left out of a bowl. I want UAB OUT OF THIS **** SHOW.

We have to think beyond CUSA, about how we can improve ourselves to be the obvious, no-brainer choice for a better conference. Right now I think that means more talent at QB and better execution/discipline all over the field. Hopefully we see a lot of improvement in 2021.

If one wants to seriously talk about moving into a "better conference" one must talk about what those conferences value -- MONEY!!. Not just right now money but annually pouring in money measured in many tens of millions of dollars - even hundreds of millions for the P5 level.(Bama and Auburn annually bring in $130 to $150 million for their Athletic Departments) We will be in competition with schools like GA State who had the funds to take over "The Ted" and renovate it as their own home field. Can we compete? I hope so because I want the Blazers to become a national brand in sports. It will not be done "on the cheap" though. Line up the funding and show the big boys our new facilities that we own, not that we rent.

If UAB can provide top shelf facilities and amenities, the top players will find us just like they do 60 miles west every year.

I would say that playing for the conference title for the last three straight years and winning two says a lot about this program’s direction regardless of what one thinks about the current quality of the conference membership.

We are indeed doing well in CUSA. I'm pleased with that but not satisfied. As a long time fan I won't really be happy until we're back where we belong.

Right now is not the time for UAB football to be polishing the trophy case. There is a gap between us and the top of the G5 that needs closing. I think that starts at QB and OC/QB coach. Our QB stats for the last 3 seasons pretty much speak for themselves.

There is certainly nothing wrong in wanting more. There is also nothing wrong with celebrating a conference championship. I have been a season ticket holder since UAB began NCAA sanctioned football. I have suffered through a number of disappointing seasons so I am well aware of where we have been. I am going to enjoy this conference championship. I trust Coach Clark to hire the coaches and recruit and play the athletes that give us our best chance for success.

How is a dedicated cafeteria going to help us get in the Top 25? Please don't say recruiting because so far our new facilities haven't materially improved our classes.

I think a new offensive coordinator would go much further towards that Top 25 goal. We were very close this season before losing two in a row. If we had only had that cafeteria...

Since the NCAA changed the rules on meals and snacks, this has become a game changer in recruiting. We need this.

We need to raise to keep raising money to catch up on facilities.

Defense will Miss Jordan but we had some impact guys sitting out from LSU, Arizona. We will miss Spencer but McBride will be a monster. The WR transfer from Memphis will make an impact. Between him and Shropshire’s breakout game I am not as nervous about WR as I was.

We need to work on more explosiveness on O in the short and midrange passing game. We need to snag another pass rusher and LB who can make an impact. Maybe another stud DT.

We will be deep, mature and explosive.

How good will come down to QB. If TJ comes back and is healthy, I think he will be fine. We need another QB just in case. If TJ decides to move on, we should try to snag an experienced transfer from the portal. I hope he will make that decision early so we can recruit accordingly.

With the team we have, I think a guy like Jack Abraham would jump on over if he new he had a great shot to start. Abraham with a good OL is a first-team all league kind of guy.

Abraham is transferring over to play at Mississippi State if I'm recalling correctly.

No argument from me about that. Improvement is a never ending process. If you aren't moving forward, you're falling behind. UAB football lives in a competitive world like the rest of us.

We have to keep improving the facilities, the staff, and the roster.

Nobody asked, but here is my 2 cents in regards to recruiting:

I really don't care that we had the most "all conference selections" in history. At this point, once you do 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team and then honorable mention, there really aren't a whole lot of starters in the league that didn't get something. And in a COVID shortened year, and with a really bad conference, I don't care at all and don't use this as a measuring stick for recruiting success.

I would agree that we are developing talent well, and that websites like Rivals and Scout are for the most part a pay to play scheme biased towards P5 programs. But developing lower end talent will never get us over the ledge of competing on a national level. I will be entitled for a second or two, but I am not satisfied with rolling over conference teams and then getting our tails whipped in 2 "body bag" games a year. Being competitive/winning those games is how we take the next step into getting into a new conference. From a selfish stand point, I want UAB to make some noise on the national level so people recognize the name when I wear UAB gear to work.

Defensively, I can't complain much. I think we do a really good job recruiting. But offensively we need help, especially with the skill players. Part of being a "Top 25 Program" is becoming, to even a tiny extent, a "pro factory". I'm sure we said Jordan Howard and JJ Nelson's names thousands of times over the last few years to show that we get guys to the league and it's just not enough. As I sit here in an armchair with 0 years, months, weeks, or days of football coaching experience I'll say that finding offensive talent isn't the issue. I think with our existing pipelines we could find plenty of good ATH's. High school programs have adapted to making all skill players competent at running routes and catching the football. With an exciting, efficient offensive scheme, we would get more touches to more players, and have a better shot at getting a few guys into practice squads somewhere.

Anyways, I am a little confused about the grass practice field and the cafeteria. I thought we didn't like the grass practice field that we had because it got muddy and caused us to have to go to Legion Field until we bought the outdoor turf field?

the grass field is to prepare for away games played on grass

That's great, but it's not like UAB can just trot over to the AAC offices and say "Hi, guys. We're joining the conference. What's our schedule look like for next season?"

We have to be invited, and as of now, that hasn't happened. More than likely nothing on that order is going to happen until the next time the P5 does a conference realignment. The belt is currently a bit better football conference, but I'm not sure that it's enough better to uproot the entire athletic department and pay C-USA to leave. The bowls and TV contract just aren't all that different.

We can b**** and whine all we want and it won't change that.

I think that Judy McLeod is a waste of an office and a paycheck. I don't know how much leverage UAB has toward pushing for changes there, but changes in the management of C-USA looks like a more possible place to start.

Our old grass practice field started out as an intramural sports field. No real money was spent on the design and construction. It had extremely poor drainage, so it was a mudhole when it rained. It also had a very bad surface, full of ruts and holes. That field caused our players more knee and ankle injuries than games did.

When it got bad we were forced to pack up all the various gear and go to John Carroll, Samford, Legion Field, anywhere we could find.

Grass fields are easier on the player's bodies, and they are better to practice on when a game on natural turf is upcoming as well.

(Gah, you’re making me at least hint at defending Judy) Judy has her job thanks to CUSA Presidents. We don’t even have to go to judging Judy’s job...look at what CUSA Presidents have done to their own programs. And how much many of them even care.

I didn't suggest that we could. I'm saying we need to look at ourselves and see what it is WE need to do to take the next step up. What separates us from the best teams outside the P5? During the '19 season we had issues at QB and offense in general. We made zero changes for the '20 season and it should have been no surprise to have QB issues again. Winning the football equivalent of a pillow fight is not a good enough reason to double down on the status quo.

If we want to break into the top tier of the G5 and out of this league, we need to make some changes. If we triple down on the last two seasons on offense (same coaches, same QB's), I will be pretty disappointed.

We are taking the next steps. Without getting into the weeds, what is happening is that we are working towards improving our position at the table but when coach flat out tells people what he needs some people want to argue. We are actively doing things but our AD can’t come out and publicly state we are looking to leave the conference we are currently in. What we can do is continue to make improvements. Yes what coach wants will help recruiting and it will also help take those next step last towards a new home. Instead of griping folks need to pony up. I just increased mine. Who is next?

Coach Clark was focusing on nutrition heavily way back when we were having meetings to organize donor groups to support "The Return". A cafeteria wasn't necessarily part of the equation, but it was probably something he was thinking of then as well. A modern practice facility was foremost among the topics of discussion.

College football is an ultra competitive industry. We should be constantly working towards upgrading and improving. I just hope we're also looking at upgrading our offensive scheme, staff, and personnel (QB). That's where there seems to be the biggest gap between us and the top of the G5.
