RE: Zaven Collins wins Nagurski Trophy
probably should add context.
its the award for the best defensive player...
2nd non-power 5 to ever win.. (the other Matakevich on temple in 2016)
the Chuck Bednarik Award is the popular best defensive player award.. Collins is a top 3 finalist for that...given on jan. 7th... note the winners of both overlap 85% of the time

Well deserved. Hell of a player despite his 1 tackle this weekend.

Even when he’s taken out of the game, his presence still meant Cincy’s offense having difficulty going against our other guys. He and the Tulsa defense played better against Cincy than pretty much anyone this season.

It absolutely sucks that he gets a stupid tweet vs. an awards gala...I'm equal parts ecstatic and pissed for him, definitely deserved the award even with his troubles last weekend, had one hell of a season.

He had the season he did while dealing with a nagging injury, especially the last 4 games. Well deserved young man!

Congratulations Zaven! He is a great representative for Tulsa & the AAC both on & off the field. If you hear any of his interviews, you will know what I mean.

Congrats to Zaven and the Tulsa program. That's a high football honor and a great reflection on Tulsa and on our league.
FWIW, I still think Player is a beast...

Kid is the monster that lives under offensive linemen's bed at night. They're careful to keep their feet under the covers.
He will feast in those set splits in Mississippi States line.
Collins ran wild because of Player, but the kid is a talent who can run them down and is a tackling machine, it's a match made in heaven. If you can't get a hat on Collins you better go the opposite direction the way Cincy did because anything on his half of the field is getting blown up.

I've always been a fan of DL. They are the closest to the action and if you have an elite one [and I think Player is] then it makes everyone on the back end just a bit better. In no way, shape or form am I taking anything away from Collins - he's on a different level athletically and football IQ. There's just something about a stout dude with his stomach and shirt hanging out that keeps coming snap after snap and makes some plays to disrupt your blocking schemes/protections, run game, and the QB's timing that is so "war in the trenches" football. I'm wierd in that way I guess.

And he is gone. Collins has declared for the draft and will not play in the Armed Forces Bowl. I was hoping we may get 1 more game with him, but I understand the reasoning especially with his turf toe. Hopefully he gets 100% healthy for the combine and earns a 1st round pick. That will get Tulsa more publicity than him playing in a bowl of little consequence.
