MBB Games 6 and 7 @ Hofstra, Jan. 2nd & 3rd
Both teams with a long break before start of conference play and the unique format of back to back games.
Hofstra playing with confidence after the win at UR, but this is not UVA. Staff has plenty of time to prepare for their zone defense which is a positive for opening with the CAA preseason favorites. Jalen Ray has scored 80 points in their last three games. They are not a great free throw shooting team. Associate HC, Mike Farrelly, has shown he is a very, very capable coach in Mihalich's absence.
Come away with one win and it will be a key start to conference play. Unless Covid numbers change dramatically before March, it is highly unlikely that non-P5 conferences will foot the $ loss to stage a conference tournament. Places that much more importance on every conference game in order to get that regular season title.
Players all heading home for Christmas. Covid prevention/caution is critical.
Best wishes to everyone for a safe and grateful Christmas.
Go Tribe!

In addition to Ray, Hofstra has a big, muscled stud at center who dominated their Richmond game yesterday.

This is not good. My guess is that we will see a pause again by 1/8/21 sadly.

As true as that might be, I applaud the coaching staff for letting the kids go home. These kids desperately need a mental break and I think that they hit a wall last Saturday afternoon against High Point. Anybody on these boards who had the honor of spending 4 years earning a degree from W&M knows how grueling just getting through the semester can be in normal times. I cannot imagine how hard it must have been for the students to pull it off this semester. And the ball players have probably not been home since August and have spent the last few weeks on campus all by themselves.

For most places, I'd agree with you. However, given the success the College had when the students came back to campus at the start of the school year, there's reason for optimism. The players will have to test negative prior to returning, just like the rest of the student body, so hopefully if there are any infections they'll stay localized.

I'm fine with no basketball for a month if it means our student-athletes can go home for Christmas. Mental health is, at least, as important as physical health.

Good point. The question is if we do have to pause again will the euphoria of being with family over the next few days be overcome by the anguish of the pause.

Mental health also requires that the entire shutdown ends and we resume life ... its approaching ten months.

Everybody is excited and looking forward to resuming life as before. Unfortunately, We just aren't there yet. Keep strong, look out for each other, and hopefully this vaccine can get us over the hump to recovery. Merry Christmas Tribe nation.

A full-scale, single location conference tournament might not be feasible both for financial and COVID reasons. I remember the heartbreaking news report of the Tribe cheerleader who came down with long COVID at the 2020 tournament. However, I expect COVID will force the cancelation of multiple games, leaving teams with uneven games played. If so, it might make sense to hold just a small 4-team tournament.

Center Isaac Kante started out shooting free throws 22-25 (.880), but he's made 5 of his last 14 to fall to 27-39 (.692). Freshman Kvonn Cramer is 3-15, and sub center Kevin Schutte is 2-5. Ray (.870), Tareq Coburn (.755), and Caleb Burgess (.714) are great or okay free throw shooters. If you need to foul and Ray has the ball, he's got a good chance at making both. He passed 1,000 points on Tuesday. Cramer is averaging 7.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, and he has a good chance at making the Rookie Team. Kante is 15th in Division I with 10.7 rebounds per game. Ray is a fourth year senior, Coburn is a fifth year senior, and Kante is a fourth year junior. Coburn at St. Bonaventure and Kante at Georgia played a tiny bit as freshmen and had redshirt transfer seasons before playing for Hofstra.

RE: MBB Games 6 and 7 @ Hofstra, Jan. 2nd & 3rd
Three keys this weekend to be competitive:
1) Show we can handle their zone D.
2) Harvey, Wight and Blair have to collectively keep Kante in check.
3) Take care of the ball, and finish with more assists than TO's. Covington has more than a third of our turnovers, averaging 5+/game, and Scott has zero assists in the last two games. That has to change.
I expect Loewe to neutralize Ray. If not, then we're in trouble.
Preseason first place team vs last place team. We'll see how solid that prediction may be, and whether back to back games will have an impact on season outcomes.
Go Tribe!

Hopefully the extended time off has allowed us to put in some new wrinkles on defense.

Kante out working Harvey. Points off of a offensive put back and twice beating him down the floor.

Man, gotta get back on D! Need to play good team help D in transition. No one is picking up Kante.
If we hit our open shots could be an interesting game. Glad for our intensity so far but we need to gang rebound hard.
