I see the carousel moving in a different direction (and as a keyboard commando, I can always pull a Mel Kiper and change my mind daily).

by 22-23:
MEAC disbands: Norfolk State and NC Central to Big South; Howard to Patriot; SC State, Delaware State, Morgan State, UMES scrambling (NEC for DSU, MSU and UMES; Big South for SC State)
Big 12 adds teams: Cincinnati (perfect fit as WVU's travel partner), Houston, Tulsa, SMU, (Boise State/BYU {unlikely} or USF/UCF)
new WAC: La Tech, North Texas; Rice, UTEP; New Mexico State; New Mexico (leaving MWC); UTSA; Sam Houston State
AAC: adds UAB, Marshall, Rutgers, Army; loses Cincinnati, Houston, Tulsa, SMU, UCF and USF
Big Ten: loses Rutgers (to AAC) and Maryland (to ACC) adds Pitt and Syracuse
ACC: adds Maryland, Notre Dame; loses Pitt and Syracuse
new CUSA/east conference: WKU, ODU, Liberty, MTSU, USM, FIU, FAU, Charlotte, UConn, UMass
SUN Belt: no changes
MWC: loses Mew Mexico, adds BYU

This is likely the best case scenario for ODU. If we get in a conference with ECU (again), Marshall and Temple I think thats about as good as we can hope for at this point (for football).

If that conference included Charlotte, UAB, FAU, FIU, USF, WKU, MTSU and App St., even better. Or scrap the Florida teams and add JMU, UMass and Ga. St. Just get us connected to ECU and Temple, and let the chips fall where they may. ECU is an aspirational peer in football, and Temple the same in hoops.

Let's look at this.

Unless the GoRs are dissolved prior to their expiration, things will move very slowly.

The first of the P5 GoRs (B1G) expires in 2023. The PAC12 in 2024, and the Big 12 in 2025. The ACC and SEC's deals go through 2036 and 2034 respectively.
The power of the GoRs is not in their legal binding, contracts can be broken, but in the monetary payouts. A school moving to another conference could get it's case tied up in the courts for literally years (see UMD), during which time it would almost surely not be paid media compensation. Not even Alabama could afford that.
This would seem to preclude any egress from the ACC or SEC for well over a decade.
The Big XII appears to be the most vulnerable to change, but that likely would not occur until after the 2024/2025 season.

Barring any G5 poaching (AAC to Big XII being the most likely), I wouldn't expect ODU being in any realignment discussions until at least 2025 due to P5 domino effects.
However, geographic realignment within the G5 (sans AAC I think) - discussions here which seemed to me to be unrealistic and even delusional at times - may be closer than first thought. The pandemic may have indeed accelerated a process that, while ultimately inevitable, otherwise might have been decades away.

In any event ODU MUST be ready. That means that our FB and MBB must be at consistent competitive levels such that we can leverage ourselves favorably with whatever is to come.

04-cheers

With the Sunbelt having proved to be equal to or better than CUSA in football, there really is no reason not to reorganize between the 2 conferences. CUSA is better in basketball, but it’s still a one bid league So what difference does that make either? Just do it.

RE: AAC expansion and ODU
I eventually see Power 5 conferences expanding to 16 teams each, for a total of 80 at the top level, leaving the NCAA behind for football. Too bad for the other 40 FBS teams. They will play each other non-conference, Power 5 teams playing lower level non-conference will be phased out. Uh no, ODU will not be among the 80.

It is depressing to think the best and most regional we can do is the GSUs the F_Us, and UNCC. Moving to FBS was a huge mistake. There is literally nowhere we can go and make any money. We can only lower our expenses by trading flights to Texas and hotel stays to more 10-14 hour red eye bus rides. As if this isn’t hard enough to recruit.

Which brings us right back to where we are. Win your league before thinking anybody in a better league would be interested. The AAC is not interested in ODU's excuses for not being able to win this league in football. And if they respected our hoops, they certainly would expect that ODU would be one of the schools that should add a second bid before anyone there would want to associate with us. And now that the Sun Belt has put on their big boy pants to start competing in football now, remind me why would they want to disrupt that to mix up with CUSA at this point? Every one of these conference wish list threads reminds me of Hofstra and Drexel fans in the old CAA, whining for years about it not being winnable because it was Virginia-centric. Now for ODU it's flying kids to play against Florida, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana schools. Excuses. And bad ones. Just get better and win. Like Coastal, Charlotte, and Liberty are doing.

If this was us, and we had this kind of swagger, we'd be right where we need to be. What a president. Good for him to write such a letter. Their team reminds me of the Monarchs about 6 years ago.

Who mentioned our stock is falling? Our football program will regain its footing under Raine. And we recently won a CUSA title in basketball. The sky is not falling. Although it’s time to turn the page on JJ.

Why would Maryland go back to the ACC?

Why would Rutgers leave the B1G, unless forced out?

Why would any school voluntarily leave a Power 5 conference for a lower conference? Answer, NO ONE would.

CUSA stock falls even more. 0-6 in bowl games, and 4 of those were against Sun Belt teams. Tonight Coastal Carolina plays Liberty in a prime time bowl game that is receiving major hype, and rightly so. I'm going to watch.

Really great game to watch. Once it was tied, I fully expected to see something like two or three overtime periods.

As an aside, our OOC schedule next year looks like a real doozy with (at) Wake Forest, Buffalo, (at) Liberty and a FCS school TBD. If we go into conference play with more than one win, I will be more than happy. Cheers, all, and Happy New Years!
