At some point I think the staff has to trust the players they have recruited and been developing. I’ve been impressed with D Line coach Scruggs but next year may really tell us how good he is.

We have the following in place for next season if Myjai leaves.

Malik Vann
Jabari Taylor
Jowon Briggs
Justin Wodtly

The rest I think are more question marks and the spot we really seem to be missing is the athletic edge rusher. We have some recruits we haven’t seen yet like Iziah Ruffin, Sterling Miles, JahMal Williams, etc... that seem to fit that mold but I’m not sure we have a replacement in mind right now.

I'll be curious if any of the seniors decided to stick around for the extra year, Brown, Ponder, Tucky. I don't know that any of them is considered an Nfl prospect.

It doesn’t always translate, but Ponder was graded the highest Edge in college last I saw (fwiw Myjai was 3). He will definitely garner some interest. I think a lot could depend on how he performs in the Bowl against top competition as well as how athletically he tests at a Pro Day.

I could definitely see Tucky back. I do worry that you can get essentially the same performance out of some of the younger players while they gain experience and build toward the future. A couple Seniors returning would be good, but we have to be careful not to overdo it and leave ourselves with little/no experience in 2022 or so. In the end I trust the staff and I’m sure it’s something they have considered as well.

Darrick Forrest - #6 SS

FWIW they also have the following ranks for individuals who are not seniors:

James Hudson - #6 OT in 2022 Draft
Desmond Ridder - #7 QB in 2022 Draft
Myjai Sanders - #10 EDGE in 2022 Draft

So we could have a pretty decent draft year depending on who goes, because I think I team might take a chance with someone like Harper, Ponder, Bryant, or White late too.

But we just don’t have the same type of talent as the P5? Lol!

There is a lot of NFL talent on this team. Consider some of the younger guys like Whyle, Ford, Gardner, etc... and there is plenty of talent. With guys like Bryant and Ponder likely to at least get a camp tryout there are potential NFL players all over this team. I was hoping we would retain a few key pieces but putting players in the NFL is one heck of a recruiting tool. Especially if we are putting players in after 3 years.

This is where those recruiting classes and player development become important. If we end up losing the majority of the players it’s time for the next group to step up and keep the momentum.
Bearcats have more than NFL talent.
LBs Beavers and Dublanko have the size and speed that the NFL wants.
All the DBs have the size (6 feet tall) that most NFL teams want
(maybe the exception is Jarell White.)
Question 1: S Jarell White is listed at 5-10, 205. Is he two small for the NFL? After four solid years at UC, I would love to see him back at UC.
Question 2: How many Bearcats will be drafted this year?
The record is 5 in 1998: Fabini, Artrell Hawkins, Derrick Ransom
The 1998 team beats both 2012 with 4: Derek Wolfe, John Hughes. Isaiah Pead
and 2009 with 4: Connor Barwin, Kevin Huber
I'm going to guess three, because great college teams have good NFL talent.
My final three: Sanders, Wiggins, Forrest.
The Georgia QB JT Daniels is supposed to be drafted mid-first round. He has started four games for Georgia. In 2019 and 2018 he had two bad years at USC. That's his record. Let's see him do something against Sauce and Wiggins and Bryant and Hicks and Forrest and Cook and whoever....

We had 6 players drafted in 2009...
Barwin
Huber
DeLo
Underwood
Mickens
Canfield

This year all depends on if guys come out early. If they don't, we probably have 3...if they do, we could absolutely push the record. If we could get six of the guys in Fickell's first recruiting class drafted, that would go incredibly far in making Cincinnati a viable option for higher level recruits.

You are right, it will be a good recruiting tool, though I think it will be a good recruiting tool either way. Unless you think this is a fluke it seems to me that we are likely to put players in the draft consistently moving forward. In fact, I believe we will see multiple players in the draft each year moving forward.

Especially when you look at how the recruiting classes have steadily improved.

For sure...but there has to be a first to start a trend. Would love it if this sets things off the way we feel it will, but as of right now, I'm perfectly fine with it just being a thing this year. We can capitalize on this to further launch our '22 class to completely new and unheard of heights and build from there.

One other thing about the draft that will help recruiting is if say Sanders leaves as a Junior and is drafted in the top 2 Rds. Or say Gardner leaves next year and is drafted in Rd 1. It shows them that every one of their individual goals can be accomplished here and they can even do it in 3 years.

Either way though, I just don’t see the momentum slowing down.

Agreed...greedily, I just would prefer an exponential growth instead of a linear growth, you know? 03-lmfao

It was reported during one of the broadcasts that Beavers had expressed to the coaches his desire to stay another year, since he was only recently moved into the LB position from DE.

Yea, I’ve heard that mentioned on here. I believe Brendel said the staff would sit down and discuss it with the players once the season is over. That means we may be getting some news on that front soon.

I think we have to be careful just letting everyone return as it could set back the development of some of the younger guys, but I do think Beavers could benefit from another year since he just recently made the move and Harper could since he just started football a couple years ago.

I’m all for having a few stay if we are thin at a particular group. The thing is, I’m not sure a lot of the Seniors that would consider staying would be a significant upgrade next season . We have done a good job recruiting and thus far we have done a good job with player development with no reason to think that doesn’t continue. If Myjai leaves early we maybe could use an extra DLineman to stick around and maybe the same can be said on the OL if Hudson leaves early.

I guess to simplify it I don’t want a team packed full of Seniors taking away minutes from Sophomores and Juniors that have developed and are ready to contribute just for the sake of keeping them. If they aren’t an upgrade, or are only a negligible upgrade due to experience, then I would rather go with the younger player with a higher ceiling.

In the end, I’m sure the coaching staff will consider this and make the right call for both the future and present. Think they have earned our trust at this point.

I'm not a fan of 4 in a row on the road, and I wish we could switch the order of Murray St. and Miami.

The conference slate has not been announced yet for dates so I listed them in groupings of home and away.

Would like getting ND earlier with them starting a new QB, and speaking of QBs, we may get Indiana without Penix with his rehab timetable from ACL surgery...but you really can't complain about anything on that schedule. Conference is really trying to lob one right down the middle for us next year. Avoid Memphis and Houston entirely, get UCF, Tulsa and SMU at home, and our away games are in probably the least intimidating venues in the conference.

Really wish we could swap out Murray State for a mid level C-USA team like a Marshall or UAB or. Not sure if it'd make enough of a difference to the committee though. Assuming everything shakes out as we expect, the minimum expectation next year could be the same as this year.

All that matters to the committee is the Indiana and Notre Dame games. The rest of the wins are irrelevant except that they should not be losses.
