So true. I believe it would have been the margin of difference needed to secure a victory for the Bearcats. So, so close on New Year's Day...but still 0-3 in those top tier bowls when time expired. I think the fact that those don't come along often for most schools, including UC, makes the loss all that much more difficult.

Here's hoping Hudson will be a point of pride on Draft Day.

Drove down to Adriatico’s to pick up a pizza on Sunday and Chick Ludwig has Geoff “I’m from Boston” Hobson on. Hobson is the personification of Cincinnati media as it relates to the Bengals the past 25-30 years. Went on to say the team is just a player or two away from being a team that can compete in the playoffs, Bengals were the hottest team in football before Burrow’s injury, ZT is a guy very smart guy who brings an explosive offensive system, yada yada (he actually said all this shyte). Hobson opines the OL is fine and the Bengals do not need to draft anyone at that position group. He would focus on defense.

This made me wonder if Hobson actually believes all this or if he is just speaking as a mouth piece for the front office.

Hobson has had an incredible stable job being the "all is well," written voice for the bengals for a long time.

The Bengals have been saying they are only a player or two away from contention for over 30 years. IMO, they are only a new owner away from being a respectable organization.

To be fair, a couple of times under Marvin Lewis they were right...and hell, twice I'd say they were true contenders (and both time had their QBs suffer season ending injuries). But yea...it doesn't really matter whether it's true or not...that's the go to line.

This draft is so deep in OL, I hope they trade the pick. If Devonta Smith and Penei Sewell are available, they could get a kings ransom for the pick.

For me, it comes down to how highly you rate Penei. I'm not going to pretend that I've studied him and others close enough to have a meaningful answer so I tend to adopt the consensus evaluation. If you think he's a guy who only comes around every few years or longer and is simply in a class above the #2 guy, that's need meeting value and you jump on him. If you think he's overhyped and is actually pretty comparable to the #2 and #3 guys, then by all means trade back.

It seems to me that the consensus was strongly in the former a few months ago, but I think the latter has been gaining traction.

If Smith, Sewell and one of the big 3 QBs are available, the Bengals could easily get 5 picks in return for that pick. Sewell could be the next Munoz, considering he actually got a 2nd place vote for the Heisman as a Sophomore, but as deep as this draft is in OL (deeper than any draft in recent memory) and the needs the Bengals have, it would be hard to pass up a 5 for 1 offer. You could get a 1,2,3 this year and a 1,2 next year.

Don't care where they get one, but after seeing Joe Burrow being carted off the field they need to address the offensive line and they need to do it with resounding answers.

Never happen, but a team should not be allowed to draft a QB in the first round unless they drafted two offensive linemen in the first two rounds the last two years.

Nice! I was wondering what the weaknesses in his game were. I had just assumed overall speed and athleticism. Seems like a great safety against the run and I never noticed him get burnt or out of position in coverage. He is a sure tackler which is a must for me at the safety position.

Prove them wrong!

I'm not surprised.

This whole season, I was convinced that our entire starting secondary was NFL quality.

The defense as a whole showed great tackling abilities. That's unusual in today's game.

RE: 2021 NFL Draft
I was curious about the relationship between attending the NFL combine v. NFL Draft chances and happened to find some good data in a 247 article by Bud Elliot:

Quote:I found that on average, 332 players participate in the NFL Combine, with very little change in the number. So the number of combine participants is a relatively stable number.

The number of NFL Draft Picks ... is also relatively stable, typically 254.

For the first time, 90 percent of the picks in the NFL Draft were participants in the NFL Combine.

2020: 90%
2013: 87%
2017: 87%
2014: 87%
2011: 85%
2012: 84%
2016: 84%
2015: 83%
2018: 79%
2019: 78%

I'm guessing COVID limits on in-person contacts played a role in the 90% figure last year so I wouldn't be surprised if 2021 is similar. So if we see similar numbers this year, of the 254ish guys who get drafted, only about 25ish will be players who didn't attend the Combine. And of the 332ish players who attend the Combine only about 230ish (69%) actually get drafted.

Fisher, Ogbuehi, Price, Williams... Yeah that's what the Bengals should have done, draft an Offensive lineman in the first two rounds.

Yeah, that would not be a good rule.

I'm willing to give Price one more shot with Pollack back and it's definitely too early to give up on Jonah. But whiffing on Fisher and Ced had a crippling effect on this team especially when contrasted with Whit's amazing continued production.

I wonder how much is picking the wrong guy and how much is terrible coaching. Because the Bengals do both.

When you pick John Ross at #8, and Cedrick "bum knee" O at #21 there is good reason to lean towards picking the wrong guy. You can't whiff on first rounders and lately in the final years of Marvin they specialized in it.
