We better beat UH next year. Wish we could’ve played them this season.

Agree if Holgerson returns. But I won’t be surprised if UH pulls the plug on him.

No chance.

The Coogs fired Major Applewhite after two seasons, and Major had a better won-loss record. You think Holgerson gets a free pass on 2020?

Holgersen will be back because Fertitta: 1) Won't want to take the hit to his pride. Holgersen is his vanity project as a booster; and 2) Even if Fertitta were willing to make a change, he can't bank roll such a big change right now with the Rockets under a mountain of debt and the hospitality industry hemorrhaging cash.

Settling for less to save money? Never heard of such a thing in college athletics. [/sarcasm]

True, but the poll is all about who WE think of as a rival.

However, I have a better answer to the question in the thread title:

Whichever one is next.

Major Applewhite destroyed that program. Holgerson will get four full seasons to turn it around.

Start here, and a menu of football conferences will allow you to select Rice under C-USA.

Nobody considers Rice a significant rival. Let that marinate for a few minutes?

How bad is that? And we did it to ourselves.

A lot of column inches in the comical today re the downfall of UH football, a giant chunk by the leading cheerleader, Joseph Duarte. Very negative. But as they say, bad publicity is better than none. Rice is so irrelevant that the only place its dirty laundry is aired is on csnbbs, which is becoming more and more sparse...

I’m no fan of the Chronicle, but at least Duarte is telling it like it is versus reposting Bloomgren’s press conference coach-speak. It appears the home town paper doesn’t care enough about Rice Athletics, and/or believes none of their readers care enough, to do any more than that.

Who considered us a significant rival in the 50's and 60's? I don't think we were high on anybody's list of must win games back then, either. I never heard anybody point to the Rice weekend like the Aggies and teasips pointed to Thanksgiving.

I don’t know. Seems like the 1973 Aggie v Owl football game generated a lot of interest on both sides. Heck, many fans hung around long after the Owls won that game (thank-you Carl Swierc!).

Makes sense - a downfall is a change, and we have had no change. Papers report on change, not continuation of mediocrity.

But I disagree that bad publicity is better than none - just ask the guys being marched into the police station in handcuffs if they wanted that coat thrown over their heads...

RE: Which Rival Is The Most Important?
The Real Estate Section of the State Bar of Texas and UT Law School used to sponsor the Mortgage Lending Institute (a generally great seminar). It was always scheduled on the Thursday and Friday before the first weekend in October in either Austin or Houston depending on the location of the Rice-UT Football game (which was always played on the first weekend in October)....for many years when registering with the State Bar for the seminar, you could purchase game tickets.

When UT stopped playing Rice on a regular basis when the SWC ended, the attendance at the seminar was adversely affected.

What's noticeable from looking at about a dozen of the schools that have changed conferences over the past decade or so is that almost all of them have few rivalry points toward teams in their present conference. Nebraska is the one school that has made a seamless change.

Those are critical stories on the Coogs. Only Kelvin Sampson seems to come out ok. Seemed particularly pointed toward Renu Khator after she declined to comment.

The games against Texas, LSU, and A&M were important in the 1950s and 1960s.

Were they important to the Teasips, Aggies, and Tigers, anymore than any other game? Nobody made plans to attend the XXX-Rice game because it was the BIG game.

I am sure the Buckeyes will pack the stadium for Purdue or Northwestern, but there is no doubt that the BIG game is Michigan.

We have never been anybody's BIG game on an year-in, year-out basis. No use lamenting the loss of a status we never had.
