I have no regrets about the Rice I attended. I wanted an exceptional education with big-time athletics. And I was okay with the political climate back then. I remember the first time I realized I was a Libertarian was probably during my alumni interview when I was asked if I were liberal or conservative, and I responded, "Liberal on social issues, conservative on most political/governmental issues." That pretty much remains me to this day, and as such I was quite comfortable with Rice back then. I. doubt I would be today.

I got a great education and I met a lot of wonderful people. One impression I have is that I really feel that I learned far more from interactions with fellow students than I ever learned from any professor or classroom. I wonder, do others feel that way?

The Rice I attended played TexasU, LSU, and aTm in football every year, and even at the end of Jess and in the Hagan years beat each of them at least once while I was there. We also won a conference championship in basketball and multiple championships in track and tennis. Perhaps because I grew up in SEC country, the LSU games were for me the high points of Rice football while I was there.

One thing that vastly changed the ethos was the composition of the student body. Using figures from fall, 2017, 13.2% of Rice students were from Mainland (Communist) China. Compare that with 1.8% at the University of Houston, and 2.7% from the University of Texas (also figures from 2017).

The ship has sailed, and we're not on it. Nor are we likely to get on at any point in the near future.

If I had it to do today, I'd go to Notre Dame.

No one considers Rice it's rival, not even UH. However, I can't co-sign off on the notion that no rivalries need to be cultivated. If that were true, CUSA would be a perfectly fine conference for us. But it isn't. We wish we were in the AAC, mainly because it would reunite us with Tulane, SMU, and Tulsa. There must be rivalries there worth pursuing or we'd be happy where we are.

Results to date support your statement that no one considers Rice a rival. UH is at 25, but then a big drop to Tulane around 5. Rice fans aren’t frequently naming any current C-USA schools. Outside of the P5, it’s the AAC schools you name above.

And that's because they're "like-minded." It's a sad state of affairs that we aren't even good enough to associate with them. Think of it, three little private schools, with no meaningful history of success in athletics, left us behind in their dust. It doesn't get any worse than that. Shame on you Rice University.

Agreed. Second choice, Vandy. Safety school/financial considerations, TAMU....where many dozens of my family have attended

PS I included Army as a second rung rival.

If I was doing it again today, with me as the person I was in 1963, I would go to some easy school like TCU or OU, as all I wanted to do was party. My second choice in 1963 was Stanford, but in retrospect had I gone there I think I would have ended up on the streets of Haight-Ashbury and/or in the jungles of Viet Nam, so at least I know the Road Taken did not lead to a total waste of my time and and talent. I've had a decent life. Rice was not a bad choice for me/then.

Same here. I do not regret going to Rice.

But if I had it to do today, with the same criteria I had then (and I don't think those criteria have changed much since then), Rice would not be on the list.

Well, in 1963, MY criteria were party, party, and more party. The more parties the better. Rice was primarily my parent's choice in 1963. I just went along with it.
Given the parameters then (no tuition, relatively close) I can see why they favored it over Stanford, TCU, and Michigan. Given what I know about myself then and now, and knowing the path my life actually took, I cannot fault the choice.

Now if I were a 2020 grad with the same academic achievements and the same desire to party, and the choice were up to me, I probably would choose Texas State.

I really wonder how many of us, with the same academic credentials we had when we matriculated, back before they invented dirt, could even get into Rice these days?

Good question. It was a surprise to me that I was accepted even back then and I have always wondered why. I think the personal interview with Dean McEnany was the tipping point for me.

According to statistics and scores published in the Thresher, I was exactly at the 50th percentile of entering freshmen.

UH 28 - UH 14.

Seriously, Hawaii doubles up the Coogs. Coogs won TOP and out gained Hawaii, but lost the turnover battle, throwing 3 INTs.

Agree if Holgerson returns. But I won’t be surprised if UH pulls the plug on him.
