New Head of Strength & Conditioning
Looks like the head strength coach position has been filled. Coach Kendrick O'Mary. Formerly at Howard. Curious to see how he does in the more administrative Korem role. Seems well connected and respected, so hopefully his coaches under him are as passionate.

Fancy title....probably has a decent paycheck attached to it. :)

I like that he enjoys a relationship with London.

It's from a Japanese company that makes these for lots of different college and pro mascots

Hawaii's might be my favorite, rather than make a cartoon warrior mascot they just went with an anthropomorphic H with eyes and arms https://tokyodachi.com/collections/hawaii

Edit: A lot more stuff available at the bookstore, too https://wm.bncollege.com/shop/ProductSea...reId=17554

wish they all didn't have the company name plastered on the design, but I will take a look at the bookstore in person next time I am there!

RE: New Head of Strength & Conditioning
Copied his Bio from the Howard website, looks like an excellent hire by Interim AD Martin!

Kendrick O’Mary joined the Howard University staff as the Director of Strength & Conditioning in June of 2017.

O’Mary came to the Bison from the United States Military Academy at West Point. As an assistant, he oversaw the development of all aspects of the strength and conditioning programs for Army baseball, men’s and women’s rugby, softball and sprint football. He also assisted in the development of football men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving and men’s soccer. O’Mary had the opportunity to be a part of the strength and conditioning staff that saw the Black Knights’ football program go from consecutive losing seasons to an 8-5 record, including a signature win over Navy and a victory over North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Before joining Army, O’Mary developed his skills at Eastern Kentucky University as a strength coach. He began his time at EKU as an intern and graduate assistant, but was asked to join the staff as a full-time assistant. He worked as the head strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s field events and women’s soccer. During his tenure with the basketball team, the Colonels earned a postseason berth to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. O’Mary also assisted the EKU football program, who also won a conference championship and made a FCS playoff appearance.

While at EKU, O’Mary also interned at the University of Louisville with the football program under former head coach Charlie Strong in 2011. He helped to implement strength and conditioning and speed programs for the Cardinals.

O’Mary received both his bachelor’s degree in athletic training and master’s degree in sports administration at Eastern Kentucky. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is also a USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach.

This guy is filling the position Korem held as Senior Athletic Director for Student-Athlete High Performance? I hope not, appears to only have strength coach experiences without a practical or academic background in sport science or medicine as this Associate AD job description prescribed.

There isn't a poster on this forum interested in or qualified for a S&C job.

While I hear what what you are saying about academic qualifications, I'd much rather have someone who is passionate and all in on the universities programs. Korem sported a doctorate, but I always felt like for the bulk of his time here, he was interested in pushing his online self help products & padding his resume. While being hands on might not be typical for an AD, I envision O'Mary will be very involved with the coaches he hires and the athletes he is here to support. That may not be the norm for that position, but I think I'd be OK with that.

This is a good example of getting back to basics. I'll take people who actually work at their craft any day over people who try to write and lecture about it. I hope that he works with the coaches to integrate the training programs into the individual sport programs as opposed to doing it independently.

There is a major difference from being the head strength coach (as this topic is titled) and being the director of high performance. The senior associate director is now a member of the athletic executive committee, and oversees all aspects of a 13-15 member staff in strength training, medicine, nutrition and sports psychology. Well beyond being a good, well liked guy and one that has the depth, breath to develop new systems of performance that will take teams to the not level. The simple ability to hire the right staff, which Korem screwed up.

I think I can make out what you are trying to say. My point is that we need to get back to having a good strength and conditioning program. I'd rather have that than a bunch of theory that seemed to be very disjointed in terms of execution. I have nothing against Korem, but feedback from folks inside the department were very focused on misalignment between what the coaches needs versus what was being prescribed, and an implied connection between poor strength and conditioning and injuries/recovery.

Seems impossible to have the "experience" needed unless youre basically a tried-and-true administrator after a career in strength training who also happens to have 2 different graduate degrees in sports psych, nutrition. Are there enough of those people floating around after the P5?

Perhaps the best person is going to have good organizational and managerial skills, be an expert in 1 of the 3 groupings, who understands that he should appropriately trust his colleagues expertise in the other 2 groups and manage and support them accordingly.

New Head of Strength & Conditioning
I'm curious. Was the Associate AD/Director of Athletic High Performance even a position that existed before Huge hired Korem in that capacity? There very well could have been someone, but I have no clue who it was. In my recollection, John Sauer oversaw the strength/conditioning department. O'Mary is very much in the John Sauer mold.

No, it was not or at least I don't think anyone had that title. It was a key change that she wanted to make. It's based on most pro sports team models and high end college programs.
