I guess 8:45 PM is past the cut off time for any sports reporting by the Va. Pilot.
No mention that two local teams played a game in Norfolk last night. As print media becomes more irrelevant, they will continue their march towards bankruptcy.

Our only consistent offense is driving to the basket for lay-ups. Once that is shut down (VCU) it's over. Little to no inside game (after Kalu gets into foul trouble). Can't shoot from outside. Typical JJ recruited team. I had hoped Kalu could manage his fouling tendencies better this year but it looks like he is unable to comprehend or understand that phase of the game. If I was his coach I would start him and leave him in the game until he fouls out! He doesn't do us any good on the bench with 3 or 4 fouls? Maybe if he realizes that his next foul he is out of the game whether it is in the first half or not, it may start to sink in? We are in big trouble AGAIN this year in conference play.

FWIW, Ezikpe has drastically cut down his fouls this year and I hope he continues to do so. The last 2 years he averaged 11 fouls per 100 possessions and this year he is down to 7.7.

His numbers are upsurd, he needs to further cut down on his fouling and we need to figure out a way to get him 24-28 minutes per game.

PER- 36.5
RB%- 20.8
Blk%- 11.9

Per 100 possessions, he's averaging 37 points, 21 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Not bad for an undersized 4 lol.

How many of Trices 27 points were outside of the paint?

Kalu's fourth foul last night was garbage. He made a clean block but the refs called a foul. I thought Dave made a good point that it was a bad call, but if Kalu hadn't picked up a stupid foul early, it would have only been his third, and he could have stayed on the floor.

Nothing. They aren't going to get significant time during conference play, so why not use this time to continue to teach the guys who are going to play?

Because it usually comes down to the bench at the end of the season. Injuries, foul trouble, back to back to back games take a toll on the starters.

I totally disagree. 8 guys in the rotation is plenty.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raoiDhIjKGk

The best quote on it I've ever heard.

The year before Nevada played 3 guys over 34 minutes. 1 guy 29, 1 guy 26. Porter played 17 minutes. That left 2 leftover players to played 10-12 mins total per game.

College players play everyday. They play AAU ball nonstop. They play pickup ball. They aren't getting gassed by playing 30 minutes a game, twice a week. They aren't getting gassed playing 30 minutes a game; back to back or in the tourney when its 3-4 nights in a row.

This year is weird because its a redshirt year for everyone but this is the ideal approach. 4 guys that are redshirting or sit out transfers. 9 active players. 6-7 playing 24+ minutes per game and the last 2-3 picking up the scraps.

Gonzaga blows a lot of teams out. They have 6 guys averaging 20 or more minutes and 1 guy playing 14. The rest is scraps. Jay Wright knows this, he typically plays a core rotation of 6 per year and then 1-2 pick up the rest of the minutes, mostly garbage time.

Who the hell was he playing against??? I bet he could put in 40 against Hampton HS.

If a frog had wings..... Kalu just doesn't get it. He is my favorite Monarch but just doesn't get it. I had hopes after the Maryland game. He didn't get into foul trouble against a superior opponent and yhat was encouraging. But after that he has reverted back to the same old Kalu. Start him and let him play until he fouls out (15-20 mins). At least you max his output and he doesn't end the game with a foul to give sitting on the bench.

Better question - How many of them were against D1 level competition?

The stupid fouls are the problem. If all of his fouls came from protecting the basket and trying to prevent layups it would be different. But over the back, reaching for balls, and away from the basket are stupid fouls he commits too often. I thought he had another over the back earlier in the second half that the refs didn’t call and I believe it would have been his fourth foul. So it’s possible his minutes last night could have been in the single digits. His fouls may be down this year but it is still way more than he should be fouling and that’s a problem.

No didn't forget about them at all. They are included in his stats Giles posted. Fact is, both of those teams lost a lot from last year's team. ODU didn't. I didn't add them because some people (like yourself perhaps) see the name Maryland, VCU and have visions of much stronger teams then either of those are this season. This season it's a false representation. Just yesterday a 3-3 JMU team nearly came back to defeat VCU after being down by 15 at halftime in Richmond. JMU's 3 wins came against Limestone, Alice Lloyd, and Radford (rebuilding 3-5 team with wins against Longwood & Mars Hill).

VCU has 2 double digit wins vs. top 100 teams (Utah State by 16 and Memphis by 11), but since they had that 1 game where they won a close one, they aren't good.

RB%- 20.8
Blk%- 11.9

Per 100 possessions, he's averaging 37 points, 21 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Not bad for an undersized 5 playing against low level CAA, MEAC, and D3 teams.

FIFY.

He is not an undersized 5, he is a 3 or 4 having to play a 5. He will never play his true position at ODU.

Am I reading this right that Kalu should be a wing player (3)?

Yes. You missed the part where he also said Kalu should be a power forward (4)?
