Due to declining cable/satellite subscriber bases the dollars will not be there in future contracts. The only way for leagues to survive is to re-align geographically. I think you will still have Power 5 and non Power 5, but even the big boys are going to have to face some financial realities.

I see it differently, the Power 5 big boys are chomping at the bit to, at least in football, break away from the NCAA and grab all the $ from the CFP and the bowls. Because of the financial realities, they very well may be even more greedy.

I don't understand why this is a discussion. In my opinion, it seems that the non P5 schools still hold the cards (and votes) to control this conversation. If the P5 say they want to break away, you kick them out of the NCAA for all sports. The remaining teams would still have the premier NCAAT for basketball. Who wants to watch a NCAAT that only include power conference teams? There are some pretty powerful basketball programs that still exist outside the P5 structure and the NCAAT would still maintain the Cinderella phenomenon, which is the thing that really sells the NCAAT, while the P5 would be stuck with first round games with Kentucky against Washington State. Further, there are P5 basketball programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc that would certainly balk at anything that cheapens their basketball brand. I just don't see how the P5 could break away if the NCAA held their feet to the fire on membership for the rest of their sports.

Completely agree with this!!!!

Absolutely. The better tournament will be the one with teams like Gonzaga and Villanova and Cinderella upsets. The P5 will become the XFL of basketball.

As a basketball fan first, I would almost prefer a NCAA that does not include the P5s and all of the crap that comes with them. I feel like the remaining schools would see more continuity, less transfers, less 1 and done, and more of a traditional college sports feel which would make college hoops a helluva lot more enjoyable to watch.

Im starting to feel that way too. As long as the P5 remains a small club of just them (and maybe BigEast) they can take their ball and go home. Pay their players, bring in hookers... whatever. But if they took the MW, A10, WC and AAC with them I wouldnt be happy being left out of that. I wouldnt even mind a more levels of NCAA tournaments like a D1AA. So you'd have the P5, D1A, D1AA, D2 and D3 tournaments.

D1A could include the MW, A10, AAC, CUSA, CAA, West Coast, MVC, MAC, MAAC and Horizon leagues. A 32 team tourney from those conferences, including all champions, all regular season champs, and rounding it out with at larges, would be a lot of fun.

D1AA: Ivy, Patriot, MEAC, Big West, AE, Southland, Summit, OV, SWAC, Big South, Big Sky etc have their own too.

Wouldn’t that money just follow them to their new tournament?

Perhaps but (again in my view) the national aspect of the tournament and the potential for David vs. Goliath upsets are what makes March Madness so successful.

I would not be so quick to assume that money would follow them to their tournament. Some of it surely would at the outset, but I believe that the more significant tournament over the long run would be the one without the P5 and that the money would come back. The key would be to make sure that the P5 doesn't find a way to poach the Big East or all of the good programs in non P5 conferences and potentially look at the G5 poaching some P5 programs like Duke, Wake Forest, Kansas, Kentucky, etc since those basketball centric P5 programs would really be hurt by a split.

I am from DukesDomain ans I want you both out of CUSA or at least into a new region of CUSA that includes the Dukes.

WTF is so damn hard about the regional G5s getting the conferences right?

If not now, when?

Based on facilities spend in the past 12 years, the answer must be yes.

$100m football. Lopsided now but great facility
$140m basketball. New this year...awesome.

Every other sport has a new facility but I don't know the costs and I am too lazy to look. Not cheap.

What JMU needs in order:
1 dump empty suit president which I think will happen
2 next president is a brand builder, not a nerd academic
3 the G5s conferences reorg to survive

ok, seems like you have figured it out and I hope you are right. How would JMU be positioned on the Cox rule and Title 9 moving up?

I don't know the nittu gritty details but those on my side that do claim JMU can deal with the Cox and Title x regulations. Does not mean it can be done easily bur it can be done.

RE: ANOTHER REASON TO GET OUT OF THE C-USA
The motivation for JMU may not be that a g5 conference is so great. The motivation to move may be an increasingly unstable CAA especially the footbal conference. If WM moves to the Patriot league, JMU becomes a southern outlier on an island with Elon. Elon is not so bad but it's a small private, not a natural peer.

Hopefully, the G5 specifically CUSA and the Sun Belt will figure out that merging and then dividing up geographically is in everyone's best interest.

Don't underestimate the significance of The Cox Bill in any decision that would have to be made. JMU is living well right now as an athletic department with the extra funds they are allowed to derive from student fees compared to what that would look like if they moved up to FBS. My guess is that anyone running an athletic department would have some serious heartburn about making a move that would significantly decrease athletic department funding while significantly increasing the amount of funding that would be needed to compete at the FBS level.

The additional fbs spending is the never ending debate on our side. We spend g5 money in every category, we pay the price then the reward is playing no name socks.

The appeal and branding suck.

Yes, the student fee funding is crack and the jmu admin is addicted.

Not so sure the branding sucks any worse than CUSA. You guys managed ESPN game day, and get 3 or 4 games on an ESPN network during the championship. CUSA gets ESPN+, Stadium and FB.

It is hard to think that any new mid-atlantic/southeast conference could do WORSE than the TV deals that CUSA and the CAA currently have. I think most of the G5 needs to come to an understanding that it is better to be relevant on a regional basis than attempt (and fail) to be relevant on a national basis.

I never thought I'd look back on the old CAA with fondness, but it was better than most left for aside from maybe VCU/UR. I'm hopeful that regional rivalries can be reestablished because that is what drives college athletics when the $$$ isn't P5.

I agree. The problem with CUSA is it isnt a regional conference, so regional networks (like MASN) don't care to carry any games. And while the footprint is national, the audience isnt, so national networks don't want to carry them either. So we're stuck on ESPN+ and online outlets. I will say CUSA has it much better than the CAA in that regard though. At least we can find the games on stable platforms with decent quality for a low price. That CAA deal would make me furious.

FLO is crap. It was forced upon JMU by the rest of the conference. JMU is lucky that we are able to get almost all home football games on regional linear networks (MASN, NBC Sports Washington). Basketball is all through FLO and it is terrible.....I guess the only saving grace has been that our bball has sucked and thus remained somewhat hidden from view.

RE: ANOTHER REASON TO GET OUT OF THE C-USA
OK, I cannot tell you how i know this, but i believe OLD DOMINION is looking to find a way to leave. I think conference usa will be dramatically different next year. ODU cannot afford to be in CUSA much longer. It does not make sense.

I have no doubt that ODU is looking to leave. The question is do we have somewhere better to go.
