If football would go independent, there would be a slew of options, some better than others.

I never understand how people think that the footprint of the AAC is better than CUSA? With an exception or 2 it's very similar. There really aren't very many leagues left that are geographically tight.

It’s better because it pays better, making it worth all the extra travel. The media deal is light years ahead as well.

ANOTHER REASON TO GET OUT OF THE C-USA
We are never getting into the AAC. We’ve been to 1 bowl game and now our basketball sucks. Other than a bus game for ECU we offer nothing right now.

As television contracts start to renew, all conferences are going to have to look at their geographical footprint. Due to declining cable/satellite subscriber bases the dollars will not be there in future contracts. The only way for leagues to survive is to re-align geographically. I think you will still have Power 5 and non Power 5, but even the big boys are going to have to face some financial realities.

The ACC isn't even compact though (Boston/ Syracuse to Miami). I think the conference your looking for is the Mac.

If we were in the ACC we would have 6 schools within a 5 hour drive. It is about as good as you are going to get. Even the CAA had Hofstra, Northeastern, and Georgia State. The MAC, just like CUSA, would have 0.
I thought you meant just conference in general, not in relation to ODU. Then yes I agree with the original point lol.

Split cusa up and sun belt. This old idea is still the best

RE: ANOTHER REASON TO GET OUT OF THE C-USA
I'm a life long fan of odu and I hate to say this. As bad as the cusa is, if you took a poll, I would say the majority of schools would love to get rid of odu and UTEP. Not playing this year did not help our reputation and if they could not get a cusa/sun belt split, I would be in the thinking of going indy and putting non football in a10

I see it differently, the Power 5 big boys are chomping at the bit to, at least in football, break away from the NCAA and grab all the $ from the CFP and the bowls. Because of the financial realities, they very well may be even more greedy.

The SEC just got a raise a couple weeks ago, so I’m not so sure tv contracts will be shrinking.

I understand that agree with you, but the bottom line is that networks will not have the same dollars to spend on programming. The power 5 guys will always take care of themselves, but the pool of money from networks is shrinking. That was my only point.

The current contracts no, but future contracts that will start coming do, the pool of dollars is not as large as it once was. Cable/satellite subscribers are down and networks are cutting expenses. It will impact future contracts.

The P5 would have broken away from the NCAA years ago if it was not for the massive $$ that flows from March Madness. I personally don’t see that changing.

Wouldn’t that money just follow them to their new tournament?

Even though the networks could get G5 content for a steal, I see them doubling down on P5s, and just cutting all G5 payouts to pay for it. Frankly, CUSA would be better off giving the content away for free if anyone would actually broadcast it anyway.

I don't understand why this is a discussion. In my opinion, it seems that the non P5 schools still hold the cards (and votes) to control this conversation. If the P5 say they want to break away, you kick them out of the NCAA for all sports. The remaining teams would still have the premier NCAAT for basketball. Who wants to watch a NCAAT that only include power conference teams? There are some pretty powerful basketball programs that still exist outside the P5 structure and the NCAAT would still maintain the Cinderella phenomenon, which is the thing that really sells the NCAAT, while the P5 would be stuck with first round games with Kentucky against Washington State. Further, there are P5 basketball programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc that would certainly balk at anything that cheapens their basketball brand. I just don't see how the P5 could break away if the NCAA held their feet to the fire on membership for the rest of their sports.

This. Not every P5 school is flush with cash like an Alabama or Texas. There are the Vanderbilts, Wake Forests, Miamis, and Arizonas. Sure they will get big bucks for their football packages but that alone is not going to be enough to cover the cost of carting all the non-revenue teams all over the country for various games. They would also have the cost of running championships. Setting up the infrastructure that the NCAA provides would be a big cost.

Absolutely. The better tournament will be the one with teams like Gonzaga and Villanova and Cinderella upsets. The P5 will become the XFL of basketball.
