Temple’s best player is K.Battle. Has the hops. Needs to show he can be a consistently good shooter and better decision-maker.

J.Whirecwill give Temple a lock-down defender. Gave Battle fits in team scrimmages prior to going down with a knee injury.Temple hasn’t had such a player since NPL departed. White was inconsistent offensively in HS. Will be interesting to see if he has improved.

RE: Temple’s men’s 2020-2021 basketball season
Really looks-like K.Battle is going to be a big-time scorer for Temple. While his season’s shooting percentages were not impressive, one could see enough progress toward the season’s end, to predict that he’ll be at least a 36-percent three-point shooter and 44 percent two-point shooter next season. His two-point shooting could be higher if Temple plays a pressure defense and fast breaks off defensive rebounds.

His rebounding is excellent, but he needs to work on his decision-making as well as his excessive turnovers and fouls.

Hicks should also help Temple’s scoring.

Temple still lacks a center, and another back-court threat.

RE: Temple’s men’s 2020-2021 basketball season
It’s been hard for Temple to attract good players as Temple has had two losing season’s to start under HC Mckie. He took over a good roster that had a winning record, but by the end of his first season Temple found itself with a losing record. Players departed who could have helped Temple this past season.

Temple didn’t secure the services of a big.

When Mckie took over he said he wanted Temple to play-tempo and run. For two seasons he hasn’t done that even though he has players who can play up-tempo, and are also capable of playing a pressure defense. As a result of not doing so, temple losses followed.

RE: Temple’s men’s 2020-2021 basketball season
Comparing Justyn Hamilton’s conference stats this season at Kent State to Jake Forrester’s conference stats:

Minutes played game:

Hamilton 24.2 mpg
Forrester 21.9 mpg

Scoring

Hamilton. 8.3 ppg
Forrester 9.5 ppg

2-point FG percentage

Hamilton 53.8 (57-106)
Forrester 56.3 (49-87)

Foul Shooting

Hamilton 60 percent (18-30)
Forrester 66 percent (35-53)

Rebounding per game

Hamilton 6.2 TR (2.4 OR’s)
Forrester 6.4 TR (1.9 OR’s)

Assists

Hamilton .9 per game
Forrester. .1 per game

Steals

Hamilton .4 per game
Forrester .1 per game

Turnovers

Hamilton 1.2 per game (19 T’s)
Forrester. 2.0 per game (28 T’s)

Blocks

Hamilton 1.1 per game
Forrester .4 per game

Personal fouls

Hamilton 1.9 per game
Forrester 3.0 per game

Offensive Rating per 100 possessions

Hamilton 108.2
Forrester 101.0

Defensive rating per 100 possessions ( lower the better)

Hamilton 102.6
Forrester 101. 7

Personal Efficiency Rating (PER)

Hamilton 17.3
Forrester 16.4

Hamilton had a much higher offensive rating at Kent State, even though Forrester shot a higher percentage on 2’s and at the foul-line. Hamilton’s lower turnover rate and and better offensive rebounding stats explains Hamilton’s better offensive rating.

Plus Hamilton played with better scorers at Kent State than Forrester played with at Temple. As KSU averaged 75 ppg in conference play compared to Temple averaging but 65 ppg in conference play.

RE: Temple’s men’s 2020-2021 basketball season
Believe Temple would have had a much stronger team this past season if Scott, NPL, and Hamilton had returned to Temple, and Scott, Battle. Williams, Perry and Hamilton all had startied with Barry, NPL, Dunn, and Forrester coming off the bench.

Here’s a comparison of Temple’s players stats last season in conference play. Scott’s and Hamilton stats are taken from the school’s they transferred to. Should be noted that Scott played PG this past season in conference play.

Points per game

Scott 15.2

Battle 14.7

Williams 9.1

Perry 7.8

Hamilton 8.2

2 point shooting

Scott 48 percent (54.7 percent in conf. play at Temple)

Battle 40 percent

Williams 47.4 percent

Perry 55 percent

Hamilton 53.8percent

3 point shooting

Scott 35.7 percent

Battle 31.3 percen

Williams 31 percent

Perry 34.8 percent

Foul Shots made per game

Scott. 2.9

Battle. 3.2

Williams 2.1

Perry. .8

Hamilton 1.1

Rebounds

Scott 5.3 (OR 1.7)

Battle 6.0 ( OR .8 )

Williams 3.6 (OR .7)

Perry 4.1 €OR .5)

Hamilton 6.2 (OR 1.9)

Assists

Scott 3.2

Battle 3.2

Williams 4.1

Perry 1.0

Hamilton .9

Steals per game

Scott 1. 8

Battle .3

Williams 1.2

Perry .7
Hamilton .4

Personal Efficiency Rating ( PER)

Scott 18.4

Battle 10.8

Williams 14.0

Perry 13.8

If Scott and Hamilton had stayed, we’d be talking about them returning next season to play for Temple.

Mckie didn’t know at the time they transferred they COVID was going to occur and players were going to have an extra year of eligibility, and therefore could return to to play next season.

RE: Temple’s men’s 2020-2021 basketball season
Temple’s defense improved by reducing conference opponents two-point shooting percentages, but at the same time opponent three-point percentages has increased.

Temple two years ago posted a 13-5 conference record, and opponents shot an astounding 52.2 percent on two’s, but only 29 percent on three’s.

The last two years conference opponents have shot 47 percent on two’s, and 34 percent and 35 percent on three’s. Mckie emphasized having guards cheat-in to help out defending the hoop. Lowering opponents two-point shooting didn’t help as opponents drained three’s at a higher rate.

Temple needs a Center who can help reduce opponents to shooting but 43 or 44 percent on two’s, and thus Allie guards to defend the perimeter.

I’m a big believer in defenses primary defending the rim and the three-point line, and forcing opponents to shoot 2-point jumpers as all teams shoot two-point jump shots poorly. Don’t like to see bigs straying out beyond the foul-line to defend far from the hoop.

RE: Temple’s men’s 2020-2021 basketball season
Temple fans should wait and see how good both incoming freshmen Miller and Hicks will be. I watched some videos of incoming freshmen PG Hysier Miller and Zack Hicks.

Not convinced that Miller is 6’1.” His lack of height may cause some problems for him scoring near the rim but he does have some nifty moves.

He’s well-built, strong, tenacious, and focused player who seems to have a high bb IQ. He shoots set-shots from beyond the three-point line, but may have problems getting his shot off when defender is taller and playing man to man. May need a screen so he can gets shot off, but Temple doesn’t do that. He should be able to shoot well against zone defenses.

While he has some clever moves getting to the hoop, when contested by opponent inside, he doesn’t get-up and release the ball near the hoop. Instead, he releases the ball from some distance in order to avoid his shot being blocked by his opponent. That’s a much more difficult shot to convert given the distance the ball has to travel.

Suspect that Williams will start at PG, and Miller will come off the bench.

Incoming freshmen Zack Hicks does not appear to be either strong nor particularly quick. Plays very erect. I don’t see him as a PF. He’s a really good jump shooter, but I don’t see him as a particularly good driver who can score well at the hoop.

POSTSCRIPT: Hicks HS videos backed up how he performed this oasg season. He was an excellent three plint shooter converting on 37 percent of his three’s. Didn’t drive to the rim and Only took seven shots at the rim
all season.

Not so. Said Hicks is very good shooter. Said good things about Miller as well.

This board is a discussion of Temple bb players providing both the good and the bad. I guess you want only positive comments. Will you allow alumni to state negative things about the play of Temple players?

I said that Miller shoots perimeter set-shots and that might be a problem given his lack of height and his being guarded by taller defenders. I
That’s not trashing him. Miller and Hicks low national ratings are just facts. Don’t want that mentioned? Readers entitled to know that. Chill-out.

POSTSCRIPT: My prediction of Miller’s and Hick’s skill-set proved accurate. As Hicks shot well on three’s, and Miller was just an average three point shooter (33 percent) and didn’t shoot even 50 percent at the hoop.

You’re getting repetitious. Please text about Temple bb. Over 40,000 clicks have looked at Temple’s bb threads.

I’ve chronicled my view of Temple bb the last three years. It’s just my take for Temple fans to consider.

I don’t get D.Dunn. Terrific two-point jump shooter in HS, struggling at Temple. High bb iQ, yet turns the ball over a lot. Where’s the coaching?

He’s brilliant getting to the foul-line often. Figured that out on his own.

When he had his boot on two years ago, his shooting form was off, and I taught him how to shoot the three-ball. He picked up the correction immediately, and wearing a boot, sunk 9-10 three’s in a row. He looked at me and said “cash.” I chuckled. He!snow reverted to old ways. Bb players often do that.

Houston should blow-out OSU tonight, but upset is possible.

The top three teams left in tournament are Gonzaga, Baylor, and Michigan. No other teams even close.
