Cheating in College Football (The Athletic article)
https://theathletic.com/2254757/2020/12/...ll-survey/

Quote:The Athletic spoke to 15 recruiting staffers from seven conferences and every geographic region of the United States

Quote:How often do you encounter cheating in recruiting?

MAC: “A lot. A lot. And it’s not like I don’t think some of them are harmless. They don’t even know they’re breaking the rule. But some are just ridiculous.”

SEC-1: “I’m in the Southeastern Conference. I see cheating all the ******* time.”

Big Ten-1: “All the time. It’s always something. Two weeks ago, a kid called me on the phone and says the only reason he committed to another school was because of promises made. It pissed me off with that because I thought this was an outstanding program and individual, so I had to give the kid advice. I couldn’t take him, but I told him to go somewhere else.

Quote:Have you ever witnessed intentional cheating?

MAC: “Yes”

Quote:Do you police cheating if you see a competitor doing it?

MAC: “No, nobody turns anyone in because they’ll find out who did and you’ll get blackballed from the industry.”

I have said for years ... and still maintain ... Cheating is far more prevalent in football than basketball, primarily because NCAA 'legally' allows a big chunk of it (blue shirts, gray shirts, wink-wink un-recruited walkons).

Whoever the MAC recruiting staffer is in this article sounds very bitter. He didn't seem to hold back.

What does "promises made" mean, do we think? I assume a recruiter could say, without issue: "Looking at our roster, I think you would have a very good chance of starting if you work hard." So I'm not sure what sort of "promise" is being alluded to here.

As one former SEC coach would so eloquently say
- “ If you ain’t winning you ain’t cheating “.
