RE: Women’s BB vs. Ohio
Ohio 77
NIU 67

The stats show NIU and Ohio pretty even in most categories, but NIU had about 3 times as many turnovers, which Ohio turned into 19 pts. (NIU got just 3 off Ohio turnovers). They shot about even from three-pt. land, but Ohio hit 8 of 15 freethrows while NIU got 3 of 4. All 5 of Ohio's starters scored in double figures. For NIU, Chelby Koker led with 28 pts.; after that it drops off pretty much.

This run-and-gun is getting old real fast.

NIU is 2-4 heading into a Dec. 20 game at Michigan State, which is currently 4-0 including wins over Minnesota, Iowa, St. Francis (Pa.) and Detroit Mercy. The Spartans also have 9 of 14 players 6-0 or taller. Before NIU, MSU has a Dec. 18 home date with CMU. NIU game is slated for BTN+ tv and local radio.

Same song different verse. I will never understand coaches who don’t adjust their system to the talent on their roster.

Square peg in a round hole is the wbb program.

This team on the court and their decision making is maddening. Many of the turnovers aren’t even forced. They just manage to shoot themselves in the foot and that is this programs ONLY consistent phase.

It’s painfully obvious they coach X’s and O’s and do nothing about their mentality.

Expect a 30+ point loss to MSU. Prove us wrong Carlsen and deliver for once.

Yes, and it gets very frustrating to see all the missed shots and turnovers. It's like they are trying to go faster than their brains work.

I have gotten to the point where I have stopped watching NIU sports. With the way this season has gone/is going, you just expect a loss every game. Maybe - but just maybe - the men will squeak out a victory against the mighty Chicago State Cougars.

I know how you feel. I have been following NIU sports for almost 40 years, and this is the lowest of lows that I can think of. Even when major programs sucked, you had a minor sport to pick you up a bit. I know they won girls cross country, but that does not even reach the minor sport definition to be honest. When you add this deep decline to the deep decline of the University as a whole, you just lose hope that it can get better. I wish we had innovative and out of the box thinkers at the helm of Athletics and University academic side, but I think leaders of both are pretty weak. Falling this far behind ISU is something I never thought would happen.

Yep this sums it up, and it's a sad perspective. They seemed to concerned with ancillary things, rather than fixing the actual issues.

Academic programs are suffering across the board, and they keep dumbing down admission requirements.

We won't even recruit CSCI students from NIU these days, which is sad to me since I got my M.S. there.

RE: Women’s BB vs. Ohio
When NIU was 2-1 and won the Compass Challenge (even without SIUc there) I thought "hey, we're gonna salvage something this year." Then the run-and-gun ran out of gas and NIU lost to Toledo. Same thing here ... Ohio and NIU were tight going into the 4th. When you think Michigan State game, think Iowa vs. Huskies MBB. Dog Fan got that right (unfortunately).

Northwestern (FB), Loyola (MBB), DePaul (WBB) ... those are Illinois' "big three" in the "major" college sports. Hell, DePaul starts every year in the pre-season Top 25. So what's wrong with us?

HuskieJ and golf4501 got it right. NIU just can't seem to reach that "next level" in a lot of things. Since moving to Huskieland in fall 1972, seen a ton of ups and downs, like a lot of older fans ... and I can't quite dig out that buried, common base element that would tell me why. I also was a Cubs fan through all the years of futility, and they just kept teasing, like NIU. But where is the Huskies' breakthrough?

They would probably use money as an excuse, but they would only be partially correct. There now seems to be a lack of a winning culture at NIU. Yes, we are limited by the players we can get, as the really good ones go to the P5. But, whether it's the coaches and ADs over the years - or both - we seem to have struck out. We have not had a decent AD since Carey Groth and Jim Phillips, and let's all consider our string of terrible basketball coaches. We have seen examples of bad coaching and bad recruiting. Put both together, and you're not winning anything. Let's hope Hammock can right the ship in football, and I think he will. We can't hope for anything in basketball (men's) until there is a new coach. But, I also believe this all starts at the top, and STF is not the AD of my choice. I do not like him, but unfortunately he's all we've got, and I do not think that top university officials are interested in making a change at this point.

RE: Women’s BB vs. Ohio
Up until this year, we have been decent in football, and I have expected a win every time I walked into Huskie Stadium. (Of course, that did not always pan out.) However, for basketball, I expect a loss as soon as I enter the Convo. There is such a culture and feeling of losing, that the smell of it permeates the air in the Convo. It's just so sad that I cannot remember walking into the Convo and expecting a win. Of course, the basketball teams do win games there, but for me, there is just a lack of a winning culture in our basketball programs. This has started with game one in the Convo. And, for sure it's not the Convo.
