It is harder to maintain that average the more players you sign.

Sure. I just think it doesn't mean a whole lot. It will come down to coaching in the SBC, and APP's coaching is pretty good.

RE: NDS2021
Most of this is relative due to rating inflation - and there really is no good way to gauge just how "talented" a team really is - especially when you get down to the G5.
The #100 ranked team in recruit rankings average ratings:
2014 - 77.75
2018 - 79.47
2021 - 82.07
I really don't think any of us are recruiting BETTER talent than we were 7 years ago - and even if we are it appears that everyone is benefitting from a larger pool of higher quality recruits.
We should all be proud of all our 3-star & 4-star athletes, but If the inflation is due to talent then the only thing that is really happening is the gap between your non-elite P5 and G5 is closing. If the inflation is due to generosity on behalf of the people doing the evaluating, then really nothing has changed.

Helps that he can fall out of bed onto enough good recruits to obtain such a ranking.
Several years ago when App was in the middle of the FBS study I was tasked with reaching out to a few specific programs as to recruiting budgets. Talking to an Associate AD at UCF was eye opening. He told me their recruiting budget was practically nothing. Said they can drive to within 75 miles of campus and get every player they need.
I grew up in Orlando and lived about 7 miles from their campus. In just my senior year in high school and just in our conference alone, I played against three future NFL players; including Warren Sapp. That doesn't count all of the players that signed D1 schollies and didn't go pro. Orlando and the surrounding areas are loaded!

There is definitely some rating inflation. However, you can compare the quality of offers these recruits get. Maybe 6-8 years ago, Troy mostly recruited against regional G5 schools, service academies, and some MAC teams. Nowadays, we occasionally beat AAC teams such as Memphis, Tulane and some P5 teams for HS recruits (Ole Miss, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, GA Tech, in some specific cases even LSU and some major BIG10 schools such as Michigan, etc). Louisiana is also pretty successful in this regard.

I think overall rating averages went up after Scout stopped rating recruits. They seemed a little more comprehensive when looking at a prospect and tended to rate recruits lower than 247 or even ESPN would.

All I can go by is what I see.
For Georgia State, our guys are becoming bigger, faster, and stronger period. Our roster from 2014 would be absolutely pummeled by our 2020 roster.
And the recruiting ratings seem to correlate with that.

May have heard of these guys.
Yeah, we got 1st this year, but let's wait a couple years to see how it translates.
Works out good for Alabama.
First in the nation is very different from first in the SBC. Outside of the top 100 or so recruits in the country, I think the rankings are mostly a crapshoot.
This. I think this is the first time App finished #1 in recruiting yet they won the conference the last few years. Heck we won the conference with a team of FCS recruits.

Yep, if 6 -7 of our recruits live up to their potential by their junior yr. I’ll consider it a successful class.

The quality of recruits by 247 standards is even across the board for SBC schools. Some signed more than others this year based on needs. These rankings mean very little.

Agree with you about some signing more than others based on needs. The greater your needs, the more you sign, and the higher your ranking generally is due to the resultant higher cumulative point total based on having more recruits. The rankings initially shared in this thread only had 6 teams though, and there was a question about C-USA, so I just wanted to give a bigger picture, and thought I'd include the average in there as well since the overall ranking is to an extent a function of that needs-based numbers game.
I like what UTSA's coach Jeff Traylor said in a presser recently about recruiting classes, stating that when we lose a good recruit to another school, we may face that recruit in a game once or twice. But if we misevaluate a kid and sign someone who ends up not panning out, we have to live with that for 4 years.
