Exclamation For the first time ever, there are EIGHT non-P5 FBS teams in the AP Top 25
.

Non-P5 Teams in the Week 16 AP Top 25:

#6 Cincinnati

#9 Coastal Carolina

#14 BYU

#17 Louisiana

#20 Tulsa

#22 Liberty

#23 Buffalo

#25 San Jose St.

Also receiving votes:

#27 Marshall

#28 Boise St.

#29 UCF

#30 Army

#34 Appalachian St.

.

In addition to the above, these teams received votes in the Coaches Poll:

#34 Nevada

#36 SMU

......................................................................................................

.

This represents an important milestone for the non-P5 FBS schools, because it appears to be the first time that there have been eight non-P5 teams in the AP Top 25.

Nice to see Cincinnati and Coastal both crack the top 10. Too bad the CFP committee are chumps who will keep them down.

Marshall is 2 spots away from us having every conference in the top 25. In fact, every conference has been ranked in the AP this season. How often does that happen?

When P5s only play conference games this is going to happen. They may want to reconsider expanding the number of conference games they play once things return to normal.

I think a lot of it had to do with Covid disruptions. It is a great leveler when practice starts and stops.

On the other hand, the increase to 8 top 25 teams is part of a multi-year trend, dating back to 2014.

2017: 4 non-P5 teams in the Final AP Top 25

2018: 6 non-P5 teams in the Final AP Top 25

2019: 7 non-P5 teams in the Final AP Top 25

2020: 8 non-P5 teams in Week 16 AP Top 25

.

If this trend should continue over the next 5-10-15 years, it's not inconceivable that the time will eventually come when the number of top-25 ranked non-P5 teams achieves parity with that of the P5 teams.

And all they had to do was not play any P5 teams to accomplish this!

Louisiana and Liberty aside.

And the only thing p5's have to do is play 50% of their matchup G5 games on the road.

I just don't see how they can continue to keep Iowa State ahead of Cincinnati. Say Clemson & Ohio State lose their title games, hell Tennessee upsets A&M. How do you keep Cincinnati out? I'm sure they'll jump USC up the rankings too.

Well, it's hard to imagine the CFP will put Cincy ahead of Iowa State if Iowa State beats #11 while Cincy beats #22, or whatever Tulsa is.

Cincy needs Iowa State to lose to move past them.

Only 4 out of 14 B1G teams are over .500...

It’s been an unusual year for sure, but I think we are seeing a demonstration of why the P5 will never leave the G5 behind. They need to pad their records against someone.

The weakest P5 in the top 4 is Ohio State who have not put up the stats to be considered there. 5 games is not much of a body of work.

Cincinnati hasn’t played since November 21st so they are a little out of sight-out of mind right now. It’s unfortunate how they season ended for them- if they would have been able to play vs Temple, there is a lot of chatter it was going to be UC/BYU a couple weeks ago instead of BYU/CCU.

It will be interesting to see what the committee does after the AAC Championship game (should UC win).

Does not matter if these schools played any P5 schools or not, you all would have just made an excuse if these schools won. UC has won 4 out of the last 5 games against P5 schools— they had Nebraska this year before Covid hit— you all would have just remarked how Nebraska is “down”.

Misread your post. Yes, Coastal beat Kansas. My apologies to chicken little.

What’s lately to you is still the App State victory in the Big House. It’s a shame UNC couldn’t see little brother in action this season.

I’m not making excuses. I just think it’s an interesting coincidence, don’t you? The teams with the highest rated recruiting classes are in the P5. If a bunch of teams are being ranked by avoiding playing those teams, then it should be noted.

Lets just hope Carolina draws the Bearcats this bowl season. Would be nice to watch the undefeated streak continue. 04-cheers

You see that in the AP and coaches polls. If a team doesn't play, they tend to forget about them. Even unimpressive wins help more than not playing.
