Transfer Portal 2020
Might as well since it is about to get hot between COVID, the coaching turnover, and general pursuit of more promising opportunities:

Charlie Brewer formerly from Baylor:

Love McKenzie Milton and his story, but I hope Florida State sucks for as long as I’m alive. Wouldn’t mind if they go winless and he somehow ended up a top 3 round pick.

Milton was terrifying to go against

As stated in the recruiting thread, if Robert Jackson commits tomorrow and all current commits sign on Wednesday, we will have no spots to take transfer this year without others leaving.

If they want someone bad enough can’t Landon Fickel walk on if necessary?

Not that I think it will happen necessarily, but just something I think to keep in mind. If they want someone bad enough, they have ways to make it work. The key is wanting them bad enough.

They've really tightened up the loopholes these days from what I understand. Here's a pretty good article on it from 2018:

A deep dive inside the NCAA's tweaked 25-man signing limit and how it could have drastic impacts on rosters

Maybe there's been changes since then but the only loophole remaining that I took away from that article was to greyshirt. So one recruit's scholarship doesn't start until January of 2022 and he becomes part of next year's 25 (at max).

Not sure I understand everything in that article, but it doesn’t seem to take away their ability to have a walk on. If Fickell “walks on” and pays his own way, isn’t that within the rules? He would just have to wait until the next class to receive a scholarship, or they could continue to pay his own way, and not use up a scholarship for the duration of his eligibility. Not sure how that could affect NCAA rules, but it’s an option.

I would think Landon gets a free ride without taking a scholarship because his dad is an employee at the university. Maybe that loophole was closed too?

If my kids could afford to pay their own way through UC (with a little head start from Mom and Dad), then I think Luke Fickell could afford to cover his kid's costs.

I think there are some big differences in the experience in not being a scholarship player. Not about the money...I’m sure CLF would want his kid in housing with the team and able to access the support network in place for scholarship players that might not be available to walk ons.

Agree. Fick's kid is a legit recruit with an .85 on 247 I believe. He isn't some no star scrub that only got an offer because of his dad. You don't take the scholly from someone who actually wants to be here, even if he is your kid, to make room for another guys fallback option. If something falls through and someone backs out, then great. But I'd take kids who choose uc first over a 5* transfer. Especially the way fick and co evaluate and develop talent

This is a fair point. I still think if they want a transfer bad enough they find a way to make it work and bring 1 more player in. Again, I’m not sure there is anyone they want bad enough, but if there is I think they find a way to get it done. They were over 25 last season from my count and probably used the fact they were under in 2019 as an exemption. Maybe they used multiple exemptions and have the option to do the same this year.

RE: Transfer Portal 2020
I wanted to follow up to this thread and mention that we apparently do still have one scholarship available. Malik Rainey is considered a walk on because his Tuition is covered because his Father is active military from what I gathered from listening to Chad Brendel.

Will see if we bring in a transfer, but it does appear they figured out a way if they want to bring someone in.
