JMU vs Delaware football spending

Recruiting:.............JMU 513,254....Delaware 577,598
Coaches:...............JMU 6,431,033.... Delaware 7,196,588
Student Aid:...........JMU 8,964,985.....Delaware 11,774,940
Game Exp/Travel:....JMU 6,565,207..... Delaware 3,115,965
Facilities.................JMU 16,566,118.....Delaware 10,018,576

do we really spend more on football than our FCS peers?

Or do we just have a more modern, bigger stadium?

I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Here is another nugget from the Knight Commission website...
JMU spends 49% more on football than the 2nd highest FCS team (tie between Delaware and Montana State). There is a $4.4 million gap between #1 JMU at $11.8 million and #2 at $7.4 million. Nobody is even in JMU’s stratosphere and the bulk of FCS is laughably lower at a median of $3.4 million. We are beating up on the poor and the weak.

If we aren’t questioning what the heck is going on, then we are complicit.

a $4.4m gap you say?

did you look at this chart? sort from 2007 to now and make it a table if it doesn't come through on the link
http://cafidatabase.knightcommission.org...ion_data-3

what happened in 2010 to make our debt service go from barely above the FCS median to about $4-6m higher than the median.

hmmm......

A lot of this is accounting. The facilities play a big role and how they account for them. I guess the nay sayers would say JMU just aspires to be a bully within FCS with better facilities- facilities that are on par or better than many FBS institutions.

My thought has always been that the facilities are working toward something and given the geographic location/market and the growth of JMU as a school that the plan all along is to finance FBS facilities and then move to FBS and not the reverse like schools such as ODU have done.

I think they recognize the added cost of FBS in terms of scholarships travel Title IX compliance so they want the big cost items already accounted for when they take on that cost.

It’s not happening quick enough for the fans and I get that but I believe that has always been the plan and when we do move we will be better off for it. Hey if they have to take some flack in the meantime from fans for having allocated money to world class facilities and beating up on FCS schools so be it. Would rather that then be the little engine that could with substandard facilities at the FBS level and trying to figure out how you build your stadium or arena to meet demand quickly and to be on par recruiting wise.

Shhh you’ll spoil the cranky JMU fan’s narrative.

I wonder how long they amortize that cost and when it will drop. I guess when it does folks will claim that JMU doesn’t spend as much on athletics and they will take personal shots at President Alger for that.

yes, i know. but they will continue with their narrative because they want FBS NOW DAMNIT!

Let's recap those numbers:

we spend less on recruiting than Delaware. But get better players
we spend less on coaching. But win a lot more
We spend less on scholarships. That is solely a function of tuition. we all know JMU tuition is a bargain in VA
we spend MORE on facilities....to build and each game day...shocker! We have a bigger, less than 10 year old stadium which just so happens to be filled beyond capacity of the old clunker we had almost every gameday. so clearly there was a demand.

so, no, we don't spend more on football than others (we just win more than all but one). and we don't spend at the level of the G5. We just have a newer stadium than most of those and VA law requires us to account for that in the athletic numbers, which most all other states don't.

When they come at Bourne and Alger on this those “nerds” and “yes men” probably have to exercise restraint not to point this out so as not to make folks feel foolish. It’s as if JMU has no plan and no idea what they are doing.

Your figures aren't just for football though, they're department wide and Delaware sponsors 3 more sports than you do.

wait. does that change anything?

it has been opined on here by the disgruntled crowed that our spending of $50m is way more than FCS peers and absurd and bloated.

whether it is football only or all sports, do those figures above change the narrative that the only reason our budget is higher is because of our higher facility costs due the age of the facilities (less than a decade old) and VA law requiring those facility costs be reported as athletic expenses?

i don't think it does.

if UD has 3 more sports, do they spend $4m more on those 3 sports? Because if you take out facility costs, that's how much more they spend than us.

Your budget is certainly bloated with administrative costs others wouldn't have and probably carry more debt than the average bear. That's true. But I imagine you do still spend more on football than do the Hens. I don't have the numbers and don't care to look it up. But when you represent something as something it's not, yes it destroys your whole argument.

Cherry pick alert...should you be referring to peers above and then offer one program from a tiny state with zero fbs programs?

A for effort, the try is there.

I’ve said before that I like having Delaware in our conference - they have shown a solid commitment to football and are about the only conference team I’m not embarrassed to play even though we don’t play them every year for some inexplicable reason. I consider them a peer and would love to have them as a rival (similar student body, size, and fan support). However, you’re cherry picking data here, you say we spend similar to our fcs peers but don’t list the expenditures of our “rivals” or conference mates like William and Mary, Elon, and Richmond. In fact, Delaware is the ONLY conference mate with a similar athletic budget. You’re again being intentionally dishonest...

Not mention, for 20 years DE has been mentioned as a program that could be competing in the fbs ranks. DE decided long ago that DE is fcs for LYF.

While researching DE, are you finding attendance trends, if yes please share.

RE: Rumblings in smelly Bisonland. FCS sucks! Go FBS NOW!
You guys do realize that DD is an accounting grad with probably 20-25 years of finance experience? I know him personally and trust his numbers.

Let me add on. JMU also has new baseball, softball, Forbes park, field hockey and now basketball arena in its $50 million athletics budget. There is only one Division 1 for all sports not called football. What Mr. King has done for athletics is build all the facilities necessary to be successful at the highest division. The football stadium is 11or 12 years into its 30 year repayment on its bond.

Facilities are why our spending is so high. That number drops significantly once these improvements are paid off. Also, UD is second likely because they built a new basketball arena in the last 10-15 years and last year, they completed a major renovation to their large but aging football stadium.

To be fair, you all should really drill down into the numbers. Instead, you comment blindly about them because you have an inherent distrust of our leadership.

I 100% trust DDs ability to drill down into the numbers and I promise you that if he found out the money was being misplaced as some of you believe it to be, he would be just as passionate calling out our administration as he is supporting them. He takes the time to give you accurate information and you guys crap all over it. The worst part is we have JMU guys supporting what non-JMU guys are saying. This is especially frustrating when the non-JMU guys freely admit they haven’t done any work to really look at the numbers. In the meantime, our own DD does and again, you crap on him.

do we really spend more on football than our FCS peers?

Or do we just have a more modern, bigger stadium?

I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Cherry pick alert...should you be referring to peers above and then offer one program from a tiny state with zero fbs programs?

A for effort, the try is there.

cherry pick?

hart said Delaware was 2nd in FCS in the above post at that there was a $4.4m gap between us and them. that is why i picked them

so no comment on the data?

He is not. Hart brought UD to the table and DD did a comparison. The numbers are not a available for Elon and UR because they are private schools. They might be good comparisons because they have both completed football stadium and basketball arena enhancements in the last 10 years too.

W&M is public and has renovated 1/2 of their stadium. Maybe DD can look at their numbers.

The reality is our administrations (Carrier through the present) have positioned us facility wise to compete at the highest division. FBS is the only sport in which we do not. Alger needs to be the one who pushes for this. Every move up starts with the President of the university not the AD or the Senior VP. Alger needs to use his political influence to move if he deems it worthy. The AD and his team simply provide the information needed to show its worthy but this happens at the request of the President. Hazed gets it the rest of you don’t.

Let me add on. JMU also has new baseball, softball, Forbes park, field hockey and now basketball arena in its $50 million athletics budget. There is only one Division 1 for all sports not called football. What Mr. King has done for athletics is build all the facilities necessary to be successful at the highest division. The football stadium is 11or 12 years into its 30 year repayment on its bond.

ha. it's all good Nation.

it doesn't bother me. i don't take it personally like a few on here do.

i just choose not to spend my time getting all bent out of shape over something that is completely out of our control, like going to FBS. We can't move somewhere that isn't available right now.

the last opportunity we had was over 6 years ago. a lot has changed since then.

if a realignment of G5 conferences took place, and we were not involved or left out, then i'd be disappointed and upset. But that isn't happening now. So why even sit and be bitter about it....day after day after day after day.

that's all i hear on here now. this entire board has been taken over by that crowd....."oooh, coastal is in the top 10. i wish we were. LU had a highlight on sportscenter. i wish we did...03-hissyfit03-hissyfit03-hissyfit03-hissyfit "

it's just a bunch of whining and hissy fits.

just enjoy the games people! and wait for our time. it's not that hard.

I don’t really get your point here. I trust DDs numbers - they’re facts. I’m glad we spend what we spend and our facility improvements over the years have been incredible. I don’t completely agree with your point that our spending will go down once we pay off the ongoing projects because in the current college athletics landscape there are always new projects to make, ie. a real indoor practice facility, old convo renovation, etc. My point was that compared to our fcs peers (conference mates and “rivals”) we drastically outspend them, UD is a happy exception to that rule and has the fan support and budget to be an fbs program

Comment on the data....show the same data for the 16 teams that played in the fcs playoffs last year.

yea, nah. sorry, i'm not going to do that.

i picked UD and compared because it was brought up as a comparison by Hart in this thread.

you want to go to the trouble of looking up the rest...be my guest.
