RE: Malzahn fired at Auburn
Anyone have a good guess how long Saban coaches until retirement? He's pushing 70 and won't live forever, though he seems like he's in solid health now. While his replacement might be seamless ala Ryan Day, its not easy replacing a legend as we've seen with Florida after Spurrier, USC after Carroll, etc.

This may upset some folks but if he wins another national championship at Alabama this year he ties Bear Bryant in titles. He's got plenty of money, would make a great commentator if he wanted an active role and I think he could surprise a lot of people and retire after the next title. He had COVID this year so he's got to be thinking about what he would like to do in retirement.
If so Alabama will likely call Dabo. If he passes then maybe they look inside.

Gus will take time off. No reason to jump into another gig right now, just do some TV or Radio work. Enjoy the time off.

It wouldn't outright shock me if Saban retired soon. I'm not sure he would do it this year, but it's possible.
The issue with Saban is that he has dedicated his life to being a football coach. It's not just that he's good at it, he's excellent at it because he enjoys working like a madman. Of course, he can't do that forever, but what is a man like that going to do when there's no football to coach?
He would be good on TV, but he also craves competition.

If he's getting $5 million a year not to coach then I could maybe see him going back to high school for a while. Depends on what the contract says. If he can take another job and still get paid then I imagine he would still take a year off, but maybe jump at a G5 job next year.

He may be like Bobby Bowden and Paterno and ride a scooter to the sidelines, but Nick is smarter than that and has accomplished more. He's 70 on October 31st 2021. If he thought he could repeat I can see him sticking it out another year. But at 70, he may finally decide to spend time with Terry and the kids. They enjoy spending time with Vince and Barbara Dooley and the do travel some in the off season. So it's not like Nick fails to understand there's more to life than football. Besides what good does a pile of money do you if you work until you die and never enjoy it? I just don't think he's a Bear, Bobby, or JoPa.

Gus Malzahn is a top-25 coach. You don’t come within a minute of a national championship and beat Saban 3 times by accident. Any G5 through mid-tier P5 would make a home run hire with him.

He said he really missed it the week he was off for Covid.
