They should take a hard look at Joe Caruso with the East Coast Sox. The guy is Tim Dulin x’s 2. He knows every HS coach in the southeast and coaches truly elite talent every year. Memphis has done an incredibly poor job recruiting & Joe would immediately charge the culture. He may not want a college job, but that’s who I’d go after.

Think back 20 years ago in football. Realistically we were not able to compete with the SEC schools for talent and still can't for the most part today. But back we were losing recruiting battles to MTSU and Ark St. Today we can steal a few recruits from the big boys. But we're constantly beating out MTSU and Ark St for football talent.

With so many SEC schools so dominant in baseball we still may not be able to get top level talent. But there should be no reason for losing recruits to regional non SEC schools.

I’ve followed prep baseball in the area for the better part of the past decade & what I’ve seen is a steady decline in the depth of the talent in the area. Whoever comes in had got to be able to recruit Louisiana, Georgia & Florida.

There just isn't a lot of baseball talent in the metro area. A few east Shelby county schools and Desoto county. But any of that talent will be snatched up by SEC schools. The Tigers should be able to compete with at least second tier level recruits. Pitching is key. A couple of decent pitchers would do wonders for any baseball program.

but that’s what they’re currently getting & they’re not competitive. The Alabama transfer from Briarcrest was a really good addition as was the Oklahoma transfer from Arlington, but the rest of the Memphis kids are “next tier” guys.

RE: Tigers Baseball Coaches
44 years ago today the Tigers lost to North Carolina 11-9 in a winner take all final game regional to advance to the College World Series. They had come out of the losers bracket to beat UNC 8-6 to force the final game. Tigers finished the season 40-9. Back in 78 there were 32 NCAA teams in 8 regionals where the regional winner advanced directly to Omaha and the CWS. Today it's 16 regionals where the winners advance to a best 2 of 3 super regional series. Then those 8 series winners are off to CWS. It's depressing that we've never even sniffed this level of success in the last 44 years.

Last years squad would have split with CBU or Rhodes, they were that bad. The pitching has improved this season, which has allowed us to win some conference games we would have lost in the past. Juco transfer Landon Gartman has been exceptional in the rotation &, not surprisingly, he came from the East Coast Sox program headed up by Joe Caruso.

Kingsbury? That’s very cool. I remember he was drafted by the Expos and sent here to AA ball with our Memphis Chicks. In 1980 he was pretty much untouchable with a 9-0 record and like a 0.8 ERA. Got the call to Montreal. One of the few Expo pitchers to pitch a no hitter plus I believe he started an All Star Game. Yes, gone way too soon.

Tom ‘Flash’ Gordon, Tim Wallach, Terry Francona, Razor Shines, Dave Hostetler…. The Expos had some talent stockpiled in AA Memphis back in the late 70’s & early 80’s.

In those days they had a local phone number you called to get sports results.

Called the number and for some reason, they chose to give the Memphis score first when usually you give the winning score first.

I heard Memphis 9 and got excited then the recording said North Carolina 11.

Made the loss even worse.
