Bill Clark coaching perspective
UAB moved to 1-A in 1996. From 1996 though 2013 we had three winning seasons. The most recent of those was in 2004. That was followed by NINE straight losing seasons. Despite being a late hire, Bill Clark took over a team that had averaged 3.25 wins a season over the previous eight seasons and went 6-6. That was his worst year. UAB is about to play in its THIRD STRAIGHT conference championship game and our fourth straight bowl game baring covid cancellation.

We need to remember how horrible UAB football was when we ***** and moan over every little thing.

Any of us who have been following UAB football for more than ten years knows exactly how much better things are. Those of us who go back to Watson Brown or before damn sure do. I look back ten years and the changes are staggering. We're so much better off, and next year we move to our new home field. Glory be!

That said, there's no reason that we can't criticize things that are lacking or suggest that asking for changes in points of failure is an attack on the coaching staff. Penalties are a problem. The offense has been spotty.

Bottom line remains that it has never been a better time to be a UAB football fan.

i am not saying we should not criticize its the constant complaining and statements like "Clark is getting paid to much for us to look like we do" that get old. I have criticized and complained about the stupid penalties right along with the rest. I just wanted to remind everyone to remember how much better off we are under the current coaching staff than we have ever been before.

As someone who has been involved since the first club ball practice I can tell you there’s a big difference between complaining about a program that couldn’t win 5 games a year consistently and one that is that close to a new year’s 6 slot

I don't think UAB is anywhere close to a NY6 bowl slot but the program is definitely in a far better place than it was 6 yrs ago.

You would have to admit the previous coaches set the bar pretty low.

I agree. In order for UAB to contend for a NY6 bowl, recruiting is going to have to take a BIG leap forward. Unfortunately, I have not seen any signs of that happening.

You are on an internet fan chatboard. There are going to be idiots and people you disagree with, and they won't necessarily be the same people.

If someone gripes you that much use the button and reduce the stress, 'cause it's never going to stop.

Clark is getting paid too much for us to be so sloppy and undisciplined. It's embarrassing and it needs to be brought up to him until it gets fixed. Maybe it would if we had actual sports journalists covering us. It's very rare for any UAB coach to get asked tough questions by the press.

We are in one place where we hoped we'd be when the season kicked off: the CUSA title game. Based on how we've played this shortened season, are we where we need to be heading to our new stadium? I don't think we are on the field, with the staff, or with recruiting. EIGHT teams outside the P5 are in the Top25 right now. With better offensive coaching and without the ridiculous amount of penalties, UAB being there was well within our grasp.

The lack of discipline and decrepit offense is holding this program back. Changes need to be made or we'll be back next year fighting to stay above .500.

First thing first, Bill Clark is the best coach in program history and the most impactful coach at UAB since Bartow. Having said that, there's been legit long term issues with this team, all of which have been identified on ths board. The longer it goes on the more disillusioned folks are gonna get.

We play in the worst conference in the FBS. We're a couple of plays from a .500 regular season. So far we've achieved the bare minimum of the goals we needed to reach this year. I don't see the reason for a big celebration, yet. To get where we need to be, we need to make a big jump in talent and execution. Hopefully we can get started on both of those this coming week.

Very logical take. I agree.

Clark himself said our goal is to be at the top of the Group of 5 programs. Right now we are not on the top 15. With our woeful conference and schedule, and with everyone returning, most of us expected more this year, even without the Covid disappointments—and Clark is the one who has raised those expectations.

Let us never settle for “it’s better than it used to be.”

Thank you, well said. People seem to forget that we were the conference favorite coming into this season. We were even getting some mention as a possible dark horse in the NY6 race. Plus we'd have to drop down to FCS to play in a weaker league.

We were one mistake from this season being a pretty big bust and it wasn't supposed to be that way. From conference favorite to .500 would have been a major buzzkill heading to the new stadium. If we don't want to be back in that position or worse next year Coach Clark needs to makes some changes.

RE: Bill Clark coaching perspective
Clark is a great coach and without him we likely wouldn't have brought back the program. He's also the primary reason for our success since the return and a main reason the stadium is happening. I want him to stay as long as we can keep him, but the aforementioned accomplishments don't mean there isn't still room for improvement. We desperately need a new OC/QB coach. Recruiting needs to take a step forward, but I think that'll come when people can visit the stadium in person.
