We got bailed out when Pastner went to GT. The administration made a terrible hire after that that set this program back at least a decade. Now with COVID and the financial fallout, it may be set back another decade.
Pastner--is that the guy that took us to our last 4 tournaments ?
Oh look, a Pastnwr apologist.
Yeah, if we played this way for another 10 or 12 years one or two of us might start rueing the day . . . but probably just one.

Saw it coming from a mile away. Two easy wins against crap opponents to get the “mojo” back and then the boys predictably resort to hero ball at the worst time. Plus BP out coaching 1cent for 40 mins
Yeah, that spread shocked me. I took Auburn against the money line. Made $100.
I'll continue to take anyone with a pulse against this team. Easy money.
Better stick to road games. They are going to dominate at home.

RE: I’ll go ahead and say it.....Penny sucks as a coach
I agree that Penny demeanor isn't fiery. But Penny was never that as a player. It wouldn't inspire but players would see that as not being real. If you look at plays coming out of time out and the half, you can see what Penny draws up. But the execution is not there. I also think Penny and staff creates a great game plan, but once the other coach adjusts, we don't have a counterpunch prepared. He's like Cal in that instance. However, we miss so many layups it's pathetic.
I also think our problem is roster construction. We have too many players who does the exact same thing. If you name the number one attribute on each of the players, you have the same type player. Baugh is a taller Alo. Neither finish consistently in traffic. When the offense forces switches to a big man, which of our guards can beat that big man to the rim and finish? We don't have a guard who can do it consistently and when they miss the big man just gets the rebound. Malcolm is a shorter Cisse. (Although you can tell Malcolm is still having knee problems). Cisse has no offense to score after getting boards, but neither does Malcolm.
Nolley is a taller Tyler Harris, just without Tyler's fire and both he and LQ are spot up shooters. If DJ is our best player, we will only be as good as his limitations. Better teams play him to go left and regardless of the sets Penny puts in to get him going and easy shots, he still has trouble finishing layups over taller players or his midrange game is inconsistent. You can tell the coaching staff didn't have time with them over the summer.
For Penny to be more successful, he will need better players. As some stated earlier, the player were rated on potential, not actual basketball skills.

Agree with rolexjames' points.
Also, this thread is "Penny sucks as a coach", and there are posts that talk about "this much talent". Sorry, but I don't see the talent.
I guess he could suck as a coach because he's coached the talent out of them. Or maybe because he mis-evaluated the level of talent. Or maybe because he doesn't push them enough to make the most of their talent. But he doesn't suck as a coach because guys miss layups and little bunny shots, repeatedly. They suck as players. Maybe you can say he sucks as a coach because he recruited sucky players.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I have my complaints about his offense, but I see us losing because of individuals' play on the floor. I knew we had problems after that first game in Sioux Falls against St. Mary's when a lights out game by Boogie was what was the difference.

Penny is not gonna last at Memphis coaching AAU basketball..
As far as players.. call me a hater, whatever you want.. but Quinones is a BUST.. he can't shoot 3s against better teams.. can't even make easy layups under the basket!.. Can't believe this kid was a 4 star recruit.

Our entire offense is ran outside the three-point line. A basic zone defense will slow this team down every time. There is no motion. There is no high low. No cutting. No off ball screens. It is a basic 4 out 1 in or 5 out offense most of the time. If it wasn’t for our athleticism and length on defense… This team would really be in trouble. Our best offense is getting defensive stops and then pushing the ball in hopes of getting a basket before the other team sets their defense. Penny needs an offense coordinator. A good flex motion offense would work wonders for this team… But I wonder if anyone on that coaching staff has the ability to teach it.

I was completely on board with hiring Penny. I'm questioning that now. I was willing to give him 4 years but that may be stretching it.

I agree with a lot in this post. I do not think missing wide open dunks is bad coaching. I don't understand how players are taking turns missing open dunks from game to game (with this Auburn one being DJ's turn).
The problem above is real and that's because we don't have anyone who is an offensive threat to catch the ball in the post with their back to the basket. James Wiseman was going to be that super threat last year.
Without this person on your team, you can't force double-teams in the post. You have to have that threat because that is the only way to get wide open kick outs or off-the-ball cuts to the basket by other players because no defender on the other team has to leave their man to help on anybody on our team in the post.
Can anyone remember the last time we had a basketball team with no back-to-the-basket offensive threat down low? I mean, besides last year after losing James............
