I wanted to see how a good team plays basketball. I was not disappointed.

Positive NIU take-aways: Monty's last year!

You really think so? My guess is that the extension will be signed before the end of the year.

I could have posted that under 'why I'm optimistic' but that was more about Hammock (only 3 more years to go before the Lovie finish)!
I'd have to get into STF's head to have a clue; so it is a (reasonable?) hope, not a 'think'.

RE: Basketball Challenge
With COVID and the screwed up schedules this year, my guess is that Monty gets another year. If STF has any seriousness whatsoever in firing Monty, he will use this time to find a replacement, unless he goes with Beane. But with STF's love affair with Monty, I would not be surprised to see a bigger extension.

Without being insulting, the members of this board should send a respectful group note to STF letting him know that NIU fans will be surprised/upset if Monty's contract is extended, even for just a year? Time for new blood, immediately

RE: Basketball Challenge
With vaccines coming out, some predicting an end to the pandemic, the start of next season not until November 2021, I personally would find using Covid-19 as an excuse to be unacceptable. STF has a penchant for doing things quietly, so (wild and crazy guess again) I think he'll let it lapse and go with Beane.

MM is making $318k, according to his contract, so there would be some savings -- another STF "like" -- and with Beane in-house (and IMO experienced at NIU's level and some recruiting contacts), who's he going to get who's better? Outsiders might look at the program as a rebuilding mess, and as an assistant, Beane would go after the job like any other assistant somewhere ... his chance to finally be a HC. And he already knows the returning guys.

STF will like a smooth transition too. He could get a 1-to-2-year deal with an openly-stated option for 1-2 more. Not unusual. And it avoids "secret" extensions, something STF has got to know irritates the fans.

IMO, he was brought in for more than just to get his kid to transfer and play. Again, could be just be me being crazy, but a lot adds up.

But like Dog Fan, I say somebody else ... anybody else. Granted, MM pulled the team up from the cellar, but 10 years is too long floating around in the pool of mediocrity.

Anyway, it's all speculation right now.

And now ... we wait. (Sorry for length ... better to get it all in one post.)

RE: Basketball Challenge
I just don't see how he stays past this year.

And the writing is pretty plainly on the wall.

Among many things like it seeming as there is no extension that's already been signed, has he ever coached a season as a lame duck? I don't recall that happening. And it's a pretty ****** thing to do to a coach if you have any kind of intent to bring him back the next season.

But, in addition, he's not recruiting. He made an offer to Keon Thompson back in August and hasn't done anything on the recruiting front other than "lose out" on Scottie Ebube to SIU, who...I'm gonna be honest...would have been a nice player to have.

I mean, Brian Mullen is out recruiting Montgomery right now and he's doing it primarily in the northwest suburbs. I'm sure he has connections there being an assistant at Loyola but still. He's got 2 guys already on LOIs from Mundelein and Niles and another 2 with offers. Again, three of those four guys go to Catholic schools (Notre Dame and Carmel) so I'm sure he has connections. But Montgomery has been here long enough to have connections too. Gotta figure he has connections at Bolingbrook at the very least but nothing even offered.

Anyway....I'm more than ready to move on. This dance has gone on long enough.

RE: Basketball Challenge
If Zaire Mateen is indeed gone (someone posted he is), then only Chris Johnson and Nathan Scott are listed as seniors on the roster. Everybody else is a junior or soph; no frosh on the roster. IMO, just enough room for a point guard. Let's hope someone on staff has some real hotshot(s) in mind and are/is just keeping quiet about it. (Note: also haven't heard/read anything about 6-1 soph. Daniel Filippone.)

Filippone is a walk-on. He didn't play at all last year but he's gotten into two games this year. Both were blow outs (well....the bigger blow outs).

He's a non-factor. Not sure what you're wanting to hear.

Also, yes..Mateen is gone. He opted out of the season. I don't think there is a way to come back from that.

Since the recruiting subject came up, just wondering how many scholarships might be available for 2021.

A minimum of 3 (Johnson, Mateen, Scott) but it could be more if someone transfers.

But who knows..maybe Montgomery (if he's still around) finally gives both Hankerson and Beane scholarships cutting the number down to 1.

(for the record, I don't think that would happen....but wouldn't it be something if the team had all juniors and seniors with 0 sophomores and 1 freshman).

RE: Basketball Challenge
I just watched Chicago State play Illinois State.

At first I wasn't all that confident we can beat them. Then they wore out and I discovered they are only dressing 6 players. If they are short handed, I think we'll beat them easily.

If they get some guys back...my confidence goes down.

How much? I'm not sure.
