What was the HBCU Mid-Western Athletic Conference?
Caught this while reading a 480-page document. Nothing regarding this league turns up on google.
Quote:In 1950, though, black college football experienced none of the excitement or revenue involved with television. In Texas, the biggest event of 1950 involved the decision by Texas State University not to join the SWAC after the school spent the previous year as a probationary member of the conference. Instead, Texas State decided to join the Mid-Western Athletic Conference. Grambling University from Louisiana agreed to join the MWAC along with Texas State. The moves made the conference one of the top football powerhouses in the country, since Tennessee State, Kentucky State, and Wilberforce all already belonged to the MWAC.

Makes more sense if you consider the first two words as one: "Midwest".

Nor did I and Philander Smith was a member. Drove by their campus five days a week for 12 years. All I knew was part of the campus was built to be Little Rock Junior College (Arkansas-Little Rock today) and Geese Ausbie played there.

I didn't know that about Ausbie. My dad lived in Crescent, Oklahoma, in the early 60s and remembers Ausbie from his post-college, pre-Globetrotters days. Back then his nickname was "Goose" – he changed to Geese upon joining the Globetrotters because of Goose Tatum.
