Valpo game canceled
"YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball game at Valparaiso University on Wednesday, Dec. 16, has been canceled due to the lack of available scholarship players within the EMU program. The game will not be made up this season, instead the two sides will reschedule during the 2021-22 season.

"Our team is certainly extremely disappointed to miss this game, however, the safety of student-athletes and staffers is of the utmost priority, "added EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "Working in conjunction with our medical and health leadership groups, we continue to follow all protocols set forth by EMU, local and state officials and the MAC office to meet the extraordinary standards for risk mitigation."

There has been no determination on how this will affect future games beyond the Dec. 16 game."

RE: Valpo game canceled
Disappointing but not surprising. Seems like we’ve been missing significant scholarship players in every game so far this year.

Choosing to be thankful to watch ANY games from this point forward.

Murphy will be back next year. It's difficult to coach under these circumstances

I'm ready for verbal bricks to be tossed at me.

Soon (by say 1/31/2021) will have say 100M doses of Covid vaccine.

I believe, quite rightly, that the first in queue are front line medical people and those in long term care.

That might be 40 - 50M doses.

I would set aside say 3 - 5M doses for 'governor's option."

Should the governor of California allocate say 200 doses so that the Lakers players, coaches and staff can get vax?

(They are in a high contact, high risk occupation. Sure not driving a bus or working at the neighborhood store, but still).

Isn't it now worth 200 doses so that Lakers' fans can have a season???

Shouldn't VP-Elect Harris receive her shots early? Governor of MI. Neither are high risk by age, etc.

the NHL seems to be trying to buy some doses for themselves - which seems ethically dubious

Yes, that sound unethical. But I will say that once we once we get past the tier I group(s), medical professions and long term care, the prioritization of the rest gets pretty dicey.

Who is at greater risk of being getting infected a NHL player or 65 year old retire?

Who is more likely to be a spreader, a NHL player or a retiree?

Who deserves the next round, healthy 68 year old, persons in their 40s with a co-morbidity, a 38 year year old bus driver or hair salon worker or a 40 year old Catholic Priest who gives out Communion daily?

And as I suggested above, should a public official like a governor, senator, vice president, etc. not be vaccinated?

How about the young members of the Supreme Court?

We watch, but let's face it, this is a glorified preseason. I'm glad the kids get to play a little but ANY Championship this year will have a huge asterisk associated with it. Firing a coach based on this season's results would be a brain dead idea. Yep that means you South Carolina.

Steve I for one will NOT be tossing any bricks. With the lack of normal activity in our current world, you just presented a preamble to what our news media will be reporting in the coming months. When a bus driver gets it before a teacher, that will be some REAL news and the splitting of moral hairs will soon be a consistent exercise, ad nauseum. I think the next six months is gonna suck!

Jerry, this is a toughie.

The first criteria is mortality: Those who are likely or possible to die without the vax. That is where the medical personnel, esp. in hospitals, etc.

And, of course long term care. Fire fighters, EMS, etc. too.

Next medical care involving very close contact with people. Dentists, optometrists, physical therapists, etc.

Once we get past those super risky occupations, the next criteria is 'morbidity' - who will get it and spread it (public health concerns). 18 - 39 year olds can spread it like crazy but deaths are rare.

Where this gets messy is that a 65 year old retiree living alone may be at greater risk than a 40 year old teacher. A NFL player higher risk than a high school teacher.

Steve, please stop my friend! You are simply presenting previews of news programs in late winter and early spring. You, of course, present compelling intellectual dilemmas, but I am kind of like an ostrich, I would prefer to bury my head in the sand and hope it all works itself out in the end.

When Japan had the Tsunami, I saw people filing peacefully in single lines to receive assistance. I am yearning that we can in the USA do something similar with regards to the vaccine. Am I a realist? Hell no! Give me, however, a couple of months of hope. LOL.
