Rice vs New Mexico - men's basketball (Dec 13)
Figured it deserved its own thread. No fans allowed. Game is 2 pm at Tudor.

New Mexico was down a bit last year and was picked 7th in the preseason MWC poll. But I suspect they will still present quite a challenge.

BTW, it appears that UNM is sticking around in Houston for a few days and they're trying to schedule additional opponents at Tudor on both Tuesday and Thursday.

It will be New Mexico’s first game. Their football team is staying and laying in Vegas due to Covid issues in their state so not surprising they will stay in Houston and look for other games. Their next regularly scheduled game is 12.21 at Boise St. Kenpom has them at 216 vs Rice at 232,

Love playing New Mexico because it reminds me of maybe the best moment of the Rhoades era, when we came back from like 18 down at The Pit. UNM called a TO with 1 second left in the game when they had none left, Egor (who hit a ridiculous 3 a few seconds earlier to tie it) coolly sank the FT. Seeing Craig Neal mad was an absolute joy. Maybe the most fun I've had watching a Rice men's game in the past 5 years.

Nice job by the athletic department to get this game scheduled at the last moment after UH had to postpone their contest due to their recent exposures to Covid-19. I hope it leads to future games/series against NM. Rice is 2-5 against the Lobos lifetime. They are not ranked like UH but this game should be much tougher than the first 4 contests this season. I really am missing not watching these games in person.

New Mexico is playing Our Lady of the Lake now Tuesday evening at Tudor. They're still trying to get a game Thursday too.

Same starting five for Rice. UNM going with three newcomers. Francis averaged 3.3 as a freshman at UNC. Singleton played a big role at Hutchinson CC. Brown averaged 1.1 per game at Wichita St. in 18-19 and then took a JuCo year. Maluach is the big returning contributor and Kuac scored fewer than 2 per game.

8-7 UNM. 5 OREBs for UNM and 5 Rice TOs. Very sloppy.

Getting dominated inside. Really need Ondigo at some point.

Yep. Fiedler presenting no problem for the Lobos any time they want to go inside

How many of the Lobo baskets have been from within 5 ft of the basket? No inside defense for the Owls.

Fiedler having a half that he'll surely want to forget. But to be fair so is the entire team. Sleepwalking against a team that literally hasn't played a game yet. 27-18 UNM. 18 points in the paint for UNM.

Absolutely no ability to score inside at this point. Now that the 3’s aren’t falling we are getting hammered. So is Ondigo still in school/on the team?

A pretty terrible effort so far. That's 20/31 UNM points in the paint and now 12 (!) offensive rebounds for them. Shooting splits of 33/46/50. 9 TOs. All in all kind of a miracle we're only down 6. Still plenty of opportunity to win. 31-25 UNM.

Not really clear what the score is. 32-26 is the last I heard from JP.

Livestats says 31-25.

ESPN doesn’t even know this game is being played.

Or defend inside.

A really good question re Ondigo.

Maluach, a 6-5 guard, now has 6 offensive rebounds.

Just can't win like this, especially when our offense isn't clicking. UNM getting everything they want inside.
