Amazing the score is as close as it is with a 33-15 rebounding advantage for NM

This game shows our issues more than getting torched by UH would. We will face more teams like this in conference play.

We have 15? Is that with a BOGO offer? One bright spot continues to be Evee.

50-38 UNM. Can't say this isn't unexpected. There was always going to be a few games where we struggled. It's frustrating that it's coming against a team that hasn't played yet, though.

JP mentions the possibility of an Owl run. A few seconds later, NM has their largest lead at 50-38.

I’ve had enough. I don’t think we are this bad but clearly not even remotely a good effort on the floor and in gameplan.

Draw within 8 but then Maluach hits a 3. He's been about as efficient as you can be. 18 pts and 12 reb in 21 mins. Team is 16-42, 2-13 outside of him.

Olivari and Evee are 9-20, 7-16. Rest of the team is 5-26, 3-14. Even with the struggles rebounding and defending the paint, this should have been a winnable game. But we need more than just two guys making shots.

I know he ends up always playing starter minutes, but at some point you gotta think about starting Olivari. I haven't seen anything that says massive defensive liability and he might be our best scorer. Get him in there at the opening tip to see if he can't hit a few early ones to get everything flowing and everybody looser.

Fiedler gets his 1st 2 points at just shy of the 2 minute mark. Not a good day for him.

72-61 UNM final. We weren't gonna go undefeated, was always going to be a setback somewhere. One of those games where the stats tell the entire story. Didn't shoot well enough (34/37/63), didn't defend well enough (UNM had 40 pts in the paint), and were careless with the ball (15 TOs).
On the positive side, Olivari continues to look like somebody who could be an all-conference guard. 21 on 7-14, 6-10. He might legitimately be one of the best shooters in the conference already. Evee played well for stretches. Abercrombie hit a few 3s in the second half which should be good for his confidence.
On the negative side, this was what I think people worried about on the offensive end coming into the season. Evee and Olivari can make shots, but there were a lot of other question marks. And it's pretty clear those still exist. Do we have enough from Cavsa/Mullins/Moore at PG? Do we have enough shooting with Sheffield only playing 2 minutes and Lieppert not playing at all?

Absolutely. It's a credit to the team that we were outrebounded more than 2:1 and gave up over 20 offensive boards, and still lost by only 11. Fiedler cannot compete on either end of the court against stronger. more athletic big men.

Rice was 13/35 (.371) on 3 point shots, but just 6/21 (.286) on 2 pointers? That's fairly incredible.
New Mexico, on the other hand, was 25/49 (.510) on 2 point field goals.
