Betting it's either to officially announce the ESPN takeover of their CBS deal or something to do with basketball.

I was hoping this was something related to the season, like say canceling the CCG, but it appears to be media related - reportedly the SEC has signed a deal with ESPN to replace CBS for the "game of the week" package beginning in 2023.

ESPN will get the first choice of games over CBS starting next season.

SEC is beating the WAC to the punch and taking the Southland 4 along with Sewanee and Tulane.

Seems the most likely as this was Disney Investor Day apparently.

Also wondering if ABC might buy out a significant portion of that CBS deal?

Yep something like this.

My understanding on all of this was that the numbers were agreed upon in January and that all they were waiting on at the time was Disney's seeking to buy out the remaining CBS contract which at the time was for next year. How COVID may have impacted that is another matter and may have been why it took so long to come to an agreement on whether to buyout the remaining CBS time or not.

It was speculated by John Thompson who handles Disney among many other clients for advertising that CBS / ABC may have been wrangling over access to a broader inventory from ABC/ESPN over a longer period of time in exchange of giving up the T1. Who knows how that went.

But Sankey will have his moment to be cemented if the numbers kicked around in January are indeed in the ballpark of what is announced this afternoon.

I'd would love to hear that Texas and Oklahoma had joined but alas, they still have an effective GOR until 2024 is done. So all bets are it will be the contract numbers that Sankey will announce.

It's particularly telling that the new Vanderbilt Chancellor committed to significant facilities upgrades and a promise to compete in all sports today. AllTideUp provided the link for that on the SEC board here at CSNbbs.

I wondered initially why these remarks came today, but in light of Sankey's announcement it makes perfect sense.

Now could Sankey tag this announcement by making a change in the date of the CCG or make some announcement impacting basketball? Maybe, but doubtful.

Alabama is vacating all their wins in the history of their program because the NCAA has ruled that being Alabama is in itself an NCAA violation?

Probably wrong! CBS bowed out at 306 million. The last reported figures put the amount between 20 to 23 million more per school. So if it comes in at 17.5 Sankey will have some explaining to do. Finebaum's interviews with John Thompson who handles advertising for Disney, Coca Cola and others back in January insinuated that the jump would be closer to 23.

Only the earliest reports in December of 2019 had it at 300. We'll see in about 16 minutes. The last reported estimates on per team payouts were between 65 and 68 million in January. If we come in at 64 million, which is what the BYU art director is purporting that would not be well received. But you never know until you know.

Is the 300 million JUST for the CBS package? Sounds like the SEC threw ESPN a bone allowing for a handful of basketball and OOC football games (one football game per team and two basketball games per team) to go to ESPN+ (which should sell some subscriptions there).

Low $300 could be anywhere from $305 to $340.

I've been listening for 20 minutes now and not one word about the payouts. I have learned that they will not retain rights to the SEC game of the week theme music and that the contract will not begin until the 2024 season. Sounds like CBS didn't want to give an inch to Disney.

Finebaum's release is not finished and no numbers were discussed. So we'll wait.

When the numbers are released here's your formula. The new per year total minus 55 million (old CBS contract per year average) divided by 15 (the conference gets a full share) equals average yearly payout per school. So 355 million equals 20 million more. 340 million equals 19 million 325 million equals 18 million and 310 million equals 17 million. So 317.5 million would roughly equal the increase predicted by the BYU Art Director. It would also qualify for the low 300 millions by Ourand.

So last year's numbers were 46.7 million (no idea what this year's numbers will be due to Covid) so at 17.5 million you are looking at 64.2 million if the lowest estimate is assumed. Not bad, but not what was anticipated in January. A presser on a contract without specifics on the numbers was 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back and worthless as boobies on a boar hog!

Finebaum isn't reliable on financial stuff.

Note that CBS is keeping the contract through the end of the term.

So the single game of the week is worth as much as all the rest of the Tier 2 inventory. SEC is also getting $300 million a year for its other contract (not counting the SEC network).

Are the PAC 12 and Big 12 up for renewal in 2024? What about everyone else? Any change CBS tries to get back in the game?
