The last I checked UC finished the season with a 12-11 record and two 40 point losses to the only good team in the conference.

If that's not a reason to challenge the coaching situation then I don't know what is.

Brannen did enough to get another year but this off season is very important. UC was outside the Top 100 in Kenpom and NET. Those numbers need to be top 60 to have any realistic chance to compete for the NCAA tournament.

I can’t emphasize how badly the need to upgrade from the two senior starters. Need a stud at the wing and good big to go with your young core. Fix those two problems and your in hunt again.

Houston is a top 8 team, which is where UC should aiming for in a few years.

Not sure what "challenge the coaching situation" means?

My question would be, what is UC's next best alternative right now? Fire a coach who's been on the job for 23 months and won the regular season title his first year and advanced to the tournament championship game his second year--mostly on the strength of his recruited freshmen and sophomores? What we saw yesterday was the result of Sampson's building a finely tuned machine for seven years now.

UC can go hire a one hit wonder from the MAC or Sun Belt who got on a roll for the first time ever in March '21. Then defer hopes of winning soon as we turn over the entire coaching staff and most of the players once again. Stay the course and Brannen will win here. If his progress isn't sufficient, re-evaluate one year from now.

Barring scandal, if things go south here they are not firing Brannen until after the 2022-23 season. He’s got a 75% guarantee of a $9M contract.

I think the odds are more likely this program is going to get better. The freshman and sophs look promising. Just need to fill a couple holes with athletic bigs.

Next year is the decision year in my view. We have two years of sucking early only to get better as the year progressed. Sucking early in year 1 but UC on the bubble before everything shut down, sucking early in year 2 cost the Cats any realistic post season opportunity. Honestly if the Cats would have beat Tulsa and USF at home, and one of the Xavier or UCF games they would have been on the bubble this year at 15-8.

The blowout losses to Houston, Vandy, and Georgia are concerning but those are talent issues and matchup problems combined with a young team.

If UC plays 31 games the minimum requirement is 9-4 non conference and 12-6 in conference. 21-10 with a chance at tournament. Have to get back to at least the year one record next year.

12 months from now Brannen either earns a contract extension or he is on the dead man walking tour.

Just can’t have a 3rd straight year where the first half of the season feels like we are trying to continually figure things out on both ends of the court.

Need a big roster infusion of talent (and the right infusion...don’t grab guys like Rap who don’t fit). Watching that game yesterday, it was sobering how big of a difference in talent and strength and depth there was. We looked like we were a buy game against Houston again.

I agree. I am happy with Brannen and you won't find a negative post about him from me; but does anyone want a group think board?

Diversity of thought and respectful debate should be welcome.

I'd get bored pretty quick with a bunch of posts that say the same thing.

RE: Before this one is over -
It's a huge offseason for the program. There is a lot to like in the young core. The biggest things that need to happen for next year's team to get back to being a tournament team.
1. Find inside depth ready to give quality minutes now (particularly on defense).
2. Find a scoring wing ready to contribute now.
3. Eason make the leap. He is a ferocious rebounder. His per 40 numbers are actually pretty exceptional. He struggled early in the year finishing around the rim, but really became great at doing that late in the season. He has a good looking jump shot that needs to translate into making shots next year (including free throws). He needs to get stronger with the basketball (fewer turnovers) and needs to defend without fouling. His development this offseason might be the single biggest thing for this program. He has the talent to be great.
4. DDJ and Saunders needs to find their jumpers. We need them to be a mid 30% three point shooters. It would just make the offense so much better.

I think we have a nice core of guys who are capable of playing NCAA tournament level basketball and even developing to be guys that can make a run. Whether they do depends on continuing to find talent and hopefully finding a couple higher level guys.

I've had that thought before, too. Did Brannen not know what it would take to compete at this level, or did know and just come up short recruiting? I hope it's the former, and he can make some adjustments in his approach to land the players that we need.

Amen.

Some people just demand group think without criticism. I am not exactly sure why differing opinions on the whys or the hows of the status of things threaten some people and raise hackles like it does. I suppose that goes for just about all areas of society nowadays, not just rooting for the home town team.

Perhaps message boards lend themselves to the phenomenon of wanting to only read opinions that mirror your own.
