I totally agree, several brands will be demoted back to a G5 level. However, let's say the Big 12 adds Arizona St., Arizona, Colorado, and Utah from the PAC and Louisville, Pittsburgh, VTech, and NC State or Georgia Tech. That would be a solid 20-team conference that wouldn't be too far behind the B1G in football competitively and probably would be the best MBB conference.
Imagine a 4x5 pod setup where Cincinnati is grouped with Louisville, WVU, Pittsburgh, and VTech for example. Those are all compelling regional matchups ratings-wise with plenty of accessible road trips.
For my own selfish reasons, I'd like to see Pitt and Louisville in the Big-12. Adding Metro Conference mate VTech would be icing on the cake.
Of course I'm going to say this, but...
The B12 really screwed up by not grabbing UC and Louisville when they got WV.
Definitely.
Aside for the benefits of the natural rivalries between those three, what it would have done is cut the head off the snake of conference realignment back in 2011-2012 and provided overall stability. UConn would have slotted over to the ACC. There would have been no AAC to give Houston and UCF the opportunity to raise their profiles. They'd still be in CUSA with ECU, SMU, Tulsa, Southern Miss (who would not have left to go to the SBC), etc. The only casualty would have been USF, who would have slotted in nicely with the old CUSA.
Yep...it would be one of the bigger sliding door moments, but it absolutely wouldn't have ended realignment. Look at the reasons why we are in this discussion now, both of those reasons (UCLA/USC to B1G and Texas/Oklahoma to SEC) would have happened either way.

and then when the writing was on the wall in '16 or whatever, they should have grabbed uc then instead of nobody. wasted years of brand building

Traditional TV has gone by the way side with streaming but there's still plenty of content available on main networks and it's almost exclusively focused on 1. politics and 2. sports, which are slowly becoming the only two big draws on TV. But also, ESPN and FOX can use consolidation to fight losses in traditional revenue by better evaluation of their commodities. All of this started in the Big East days when ESPN moved schools around for network purposes and now we're in a territory where it seems Fox and ESPN are essentially holding a pick-up game draft every few years to bring high-value programs into their network.

What ever happened to the original Realignment thread? I know it was archived, but it seems to have been completely removed at some point.
I was just curious how many posts and views that thread ended up having before it was retired.

I actually think GTS said that thread was screwing with the entire web tree and had to be deleted because of it's size. It had something like 3 million views Iif i remember right.

Thanks! What a shame though, I would have loved to download it as an archive. That thing should be in the Library of Congress.

RE: All Things Realignment 2.0
While on the subject, I'll add that NY Post writer Andrew Marchand floated in a column earlier this week that CO may be the first school to break ranks with the Pac 12 and join the Big 12. Colorado is a former Big 12 member.
It wouldn't surprise me. I'm sure Deion Sanders has made it clear to University leadership that he doesn't want to recruit to a school that's not on the traditional networks and ESPN or Fox. Even the rumored possibility of the CW picking up Pac 12 games doesn't exactly scream "power" conference.
If CO joins the Big 12, I don't think Arizona will be far behind. At that point, perhaps the wheels are off the Pac 12 for good. As broadcast TV used to say, "stay tuned".

B12 has far better recruiting territory as well.

Great point. When UC reached the promised land of the Big 12 I could never have imagined the potential demise of the Pac 12 shortly thereafter. I'm really impressed with Yormark's leadership as commissioner and circumstances seem to favor the Big 12 not only surviving, but thriving in this latest round of realignment.
For UC, the best is yet to come.

That thing was a beast, if I remember correctly it started with the Maryland to the Big Ten news. Lots of names that are no longer with us frequented that thread...speaking of, it's nice to see you 'round here tuba!

RE: All Things Realignment 2.0
The saga continues and the new wrinkle the past couple of days has been turbulence in the friendly skies of the ACC. That, along with a prediction that the Big 12 is interested in UCONN. While the haves and have nots suddenly chew on each other in the ACC, that GOR isn't likely to allow any movement soon. There was speculation today that FSU and Miami (FL) could be on the B10 radar too.
My take? Much of this is disinformation aimed at pressuring WA/OR to jump to the B10 and some combination of the four corners schools to break for the B12. If those Pac 12 schools sense impending doom for their conference and suddenly feel the B10 and B12 are shopping east of the Mississippi, there may be a new sense of urgency for the folks west of the Rockies.
It's fun to sit back and watch all this knowing UC has found a P5 home with a conference that seems to have rising fortunes and promising stability--at least for the next several years. History has shown that the only constant in conference alignment is change. Grab some more popcorn and enjoy the show.
