Well since Washington gave it up years ago, how about the Birmingham Bullets. Fits as well here as it did in DC.

Atlanta had that team.

I know, I grew up there. I just couldn't resist when "The Pecans" came up.

When Larry became mayor, the city's mood was more funeral like than optimistic. He did sometimes go overboard in his rhetoric that tried to change the city's mood and the beluga whale reference was one of them. He had several good ideas and in his short tenure, a few worked out. We didn't get the Olympics, but we did get the World Games. The city has been on the rebound ever since.

No, Larry had stupid (and, frequently, illegal) ideas. See: cruise ship terminal in Birmingport. And he had nothing to do with getting the World Games. He was rotting in federal prison when that happened. Larry Langford was nothing more than a carnival barker. I mean, the fact he was ever the mayor of Birmingham in the first place was a fraud, considering he never lived in the city.

I recall that there was a fuss over Larry living in Fairfield and only renting an apartment in B'ham. What you might have forgotten is that a Mayor of B'ham built a mansion named Vestavia on the crest of Shades Mountain which later became the name of the city that grew up in that area (B'ham did get the softball fields on Greensprings to remember him by).

Larry had visions for this city that many felt were too farfetched and were ridiculed, but look at what has been built since he left. We have a small Protective Stadium (instead of a major league MPF) and a smaller capacity(after renovation) Legacy Arena. We are now a "G League" city in every sport played here. There is even talk of Huntsville becoming the largest city in Alabama -- facilitated by state level support for industrial growth denied for over a century to B'ham. It is not happenstance that Montgomery has three state universities, Huntsville has two and B'ham has one (and the state placed its second School of Pharmacy at USA to match the other one at Auburn).

birmingham has always been a minor league town and will continue to be minor league. its too small a market for major professional sports.
