Phoenix is perfect for the baseball tournament - usually great weather, central location, easy to get to flight wise, fields easy to get to from the airport, multiple options, professional quality fields and media, and all the scouts.

Yeah I think it would be a dumb move to take the baseball tournament out of the PHX area unless there is another "regional" location that can boast similar amenities.

Even with all that’s been said - you got an issue

Would the Southwest Division be thrilled with BSB and hoops tournaments both living in the other division? Not sure that would be the case.

Basketball seems locked into Vegas for now but can’t imagine baseball staying put as that would mean arguably the top three sports (MBB, BSB and WBB) with championship events wouldn’t sniff Texas. There’s a decent sized drop off from there (no offense to any other sports)

Can any TX city beat what Vegas or an MLB spring training stadium in PHX area can offer?

We can throw out moving the hoops tournaments. Pulling them from Vegas would be dumber than pulling baseball from PHX. Vegas has become the Mecca for conference tournaments.

The question is what is better for the WAC as a whole. Is marketing the baseball tournament in PHX in front of MLB scouts and logistical ease/business relationships built over the years more important than moving the tournament to San Antonio (just picked a random TX city, I have no idea what can compete with PHX amenities for baseball) to appease the SLC defectors? Will there be added costs for hosting it elsewhere, or does that not matter and it's a politically driven move just because?

RE basketball: Why would the Texas schools even think about moving the tournament? Viva Las Vegas

Baseball: I’m more neutral on this one. Texas has some excellent facilities as nice or nicer the HoHoKam and I’m not as convinced as some about the concentration of scouts in Arizona argument.

I'm going off of what Hurd said. Makes sense that a lot of scouts live in PHX area as spring ball is hosted there. They probably catch some WACT games before heading out to the other conference tournaments to scout those.

Agree with all the others. No one is moving basketball and the Texas schools (and certainly their fans) have not clamored about it one way or another.

Agree.

Great facilities in Texas and I do not think the scout argument is that big a deal to keep the game(s) in Arizona on an annual basis. If the baseball coaches say it is, fine - but I think by the WAC tournament, most of the position players and pitchers have already been seen ample times. Also the conference tournament is not a good representation (especially with the shenanigans that happens with pitchers during league tournaments!)

Those are great options but how could they accommodate the WAC BSB tournament? MiLB and their member teams aren't going to block out time on their fields during their seasons. Spring training facilities have so much more availability to work with the WAC and especially now with 4 extra schools plus another one in SUU the following year. The AZ is fairly centralized and is in the PHX metro area. 7 options in the same metro is good enough for the WAC, not to mention 7 of the WAC's current/future members are west of TX.

Pick a park with lots of shade to shelter viewers from daytime temps in early June and I’m good. I’m also not wild about potential traffic problems of getting from the airport to, say, Peoria or Surprise. Salt River seems to be a great choice.
