MHSAA getting no answers from State Government
The lack of transparency is frustrating.

Dear GullLake,
The article was interesting, but are there any statistics on how many athletes in the time period that was stated, came down with covid? Were there any cases at all? What about coaches and other staff?

Ken -

We have not seen all the stats, and that lack of transparency from State Government is the problem. Show us how you come to these conclusions. Give us the background to support and defend your decisions.

Here are the stats MHSAA presented from the article:

"Uyl said the MHSAA also presented government officials with evidence that high school sports have not been a super spreader. Uyl pointed out that 95-to-98.5 percent of all the state’s football teams played each week in all nine weeks during the fall season. He added that 94 percent to just over 98 percent of all volleyball teams played each week, and in all the rest of the fall sports, the number of participating teams never dropped below 97 percent at any time.

“We had put together an incredibly, well thought out plan, citing all of our evidence and data that we have collected from the first day of fall practice in August,” Uyl said. “It was a very reasonable plan to let our three ongoing fall tournaments, football, volleyball and swim, be able to get the closure and to do it safely in the month of December. We had productive conversations with decision-makers leading up to yesterday."

Dear GullLake,
I was asking questions. I was not arriving to conclusions. The article talks about what percentages of athletes participated in various sports. It does not mention if there were any covid cases. That is an important statistic.

It is an important statistic. Does the State have it? If so, what is it and did the State consider it before arbitrarily shutting down the last few weeks of fall sports?

From reading the article, I get the impression the State's decision was more impulsive and reactionary than scientific and thoughtful. MHSAA appeared to be doing things right.

More transparency is needed.
