Could the BYU/Coastal Carolina idea continue?
So the BYU vs. CC was interesting. On last Thursday they agreed to play a game on Saturday to help each others SOS. Could this be an idea for schools (Specifically Mid-Majors) looking to strengthen their SOS late in the year?
Hypothetically: If NIU was ranked 15 and 10-0 and contacted Boise State who was 10-0 and ranked 16, wouldn't that be a good way to increase the rankings rather than playing a 0-10 Kent State?
Were the rules relaxed this year because of covid? Or is scheduling always this easy, but ADs and conferences make it more difficult?

I guess anything is possible but it seems like it would be hard to do with fans there. I'm not sure how you handle ticketing on such short notice, not only for visiting and "walkup" fans but season ticket holders too. You've sold a ticket package to the latter and they've planned on certain dates which are now changed. Also not sure how you handle the logistics of food and all the game day employees in less than a week. Parking, security, ushers, concessions to name a few. Those are all exponentially larger with fans in attendance.

The canceled BYU home game would have been particularly ugly this year.

Yes, yes, yes. This was best football event of the year and fun game to watch.

I guess it would have to be a little more planned in that mid-majors would leave an open week at the end of the season for this potential. If They finish a game on Saturday and schedule the game on Sunday I see no reason as to why the game couldn't happen. Follow an NFL playoff model, but on a smaller scale. A week should be more than enough time to schedule a football game.
Logistically it would be difficult, but I feel that two ranked opponents at the end of the year would outweigh any logistical issues the universities might face.

If it’s a niu home game there won’t be many tickets to deal with haha. But I doubt this likely in normal years.

RE: Could the BYU/Coastal Carolina idea continue?
I think this is just a BYU thing. Being independent I don’t think they have an auto bid to a ny6. So they need to be ranked #9 or better(historically). It would not make sense for two G5 teams to do this at the end of the season. Well, not for the higher ranked G5 since they already qualify for NY6 bowl. I guess a scenario with 3 G5’s in the top 15 or so would then make sense. The highest rated G5 would have the auto bid and then if you also had a 11th ranked NIU play a 13th ranked boise, maybe that win gets them into the top 9 or just a better shot at a NY6.

The goal would be to make it into the CFP not just a NY6 bowl. The incentive is for the top 2 G5 teams to play to improve their status.
Costal should play Cinn right now.

Still seems like a losing proposition for the top g5. In this case cincy. They won’t move up enough unless the 4 teams ahead lose(or OSU doesn’t qualify, then 3), in which case they’d move ahead regardless of who they play. Maybe in the computer rankings a win over CC would be enough? IMO the only one to benefit would be CC possibly moving into a top 10 with a win over Cincinnati and a NY6(but no playoff). There may be seasons where it would make sense, but i can’t imagine a scenario unless the G5’s were ranked 5th and 6th where a win could move them up into top 4 without a loss from a top 4.

RE: Could the BYU/Coastal Carolina idea continue?
Basketball used to do this but stopped a little more than a few years ago. I think it was called Bracket Buster or something and there was a blank spot on all (I think, all) mid-major programs had a common blank spot on their schedule and it was filled in with a semi-local team of the same caliber.
I don't think it ever actually amounted to anything that mattered and was more of a marketing thing.
