CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati football team will face the University of Notre Dame as part of its 2021 non-conference schedule, the schools jointly announced Thursday.
The matchup is set for Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021 at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. The Bearcats and Fighting Irish have met once on the gridiron, 119 years ago with Notre Dame earning a 58-0 home win on Oct. 20, 1900.
"We recognize the importance of our institution's presence on the national stage and this matchup fits our profile. Director of Athletics Mike Bohn said. "There are many ties between Cincinnati and Notre Dame constituents and we are excited to add these types of high-level games to our future football schedule that match the drive and competitiveness of the football program under Head Coach Luke Fickell."
When the teams last met, it would be 14 years before Cincinnati became the Bearcats and 27 before Notre Dame was the Fighting Irish.
Among NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision programs, UC and Notre Dame rank among the 15 oldest with the Bearcats sitting at No. 10 (1885) and Notre Dame at No. 13 (1887).
Things which have been invented since the teams last played each other include: the forward pass, artificial turf, supermarkets, air conditioning, traffic signals, cheeseburger, the jet engine, the internet and smart phones.
UC has long embraced its role as an innovator in the world, offering its own list of discoveries since 1900, including: cooperative education (1906), the first nursing baccalaureate program (1916), the electronic organ (1930s), Benadryl (1940s), heart-lung machine (1951), oral polio vaccine (1950s), the first medical laser lab (1961), the first emergency medicine residency program (1970) and the first degree program offered via satellite (1977).
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly helmed UC's program from 2007-09, leading the Bearcats to 40 wins, three bowl games and back-to-back conference championships and BCS bowl appearances in 2008 and 2009.
The game completes UC's 2021 non-league schedule. The Bearcats will open the campaign with two-straight home games, facing Miami (OH) on Sept. 4, 2021 and Murray State on Sept. 11, 2021. UC will also travel to Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021.
The Notre Dame matchup is another in a series of upcoming noteworthy non-conference games, including contests against Nebraska (2021 – road, 2025 – home), Indiana (2021 – road, 2022 – home) and Pittsburgh (2023 – road, 2024 – home).
LOOKING AHEAD
UC opens the 2019 campaign against UCLA on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats finished 2018 with 11 or more wins for the third time in program history (2008, 2009) and knocked off Virginia Tech in the 2018 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. Looking ahead at 2019, UC is set to return more than 85% of its roster, over 5,000 yards of total offense, 10 of its Top-15 tacklers and 14 starters from the 2018 squad.
