Oh God...here we go again. The WAC is like a disgraced Sith Lord Disciple who had it's arms and legs cut off but refuses to die and somehow keeps reconstituting itself in one form or fashion. Incredible...

This time it will be an FCS version of the WAC, this could be the step NMSU needs to also drop to FCS. I don’t see them going after any current FBS schools.

Thank goodness they won't be an FBS league.

Maybe NMSU will re-join the WAC and drop to FCS.

Can’t the WAC restart FBS. I thought since they were a defunct FBS league in modern times they could restart it.

It's possible but unlikely. The WAC may be looking to propel this new FCS league into FBS in 10-15 years however. I'm not saying it will happen but the WAC restarting football (even at FCS level) is an ominous sign. Conference will not Die. "Impressive", as Darth Vader would say.

NMSU has no plans to move down to FCS. We have football schedules out to 2025, I believe (mostly complete, I believe). I really think the model is similar to what the SBC did. It isn’t going to FBS for some time, but if you can get a group of like-minded institutions with the ambition to grow into FBS, that could be a path to an FBS conference for NMSU.

I personally feel as if the landscape in college football is going to be very different by the time this group of schools is ready for FBS. Not sure NMSU is going to be in the WAC by then. Who knows?

GO AGGIES!!!

You guys are in a tough spot with football. Obviously MW and CUSA are your current best options. Both do those conferences are sitting at 14 teams. If ULM were to drop, if we were to take Marshall and USM from CUSA, TxSt and NMSU back fill into CUSA, that wouldn’t be a bad answer.

I’d love to just be in a conference again. Indy hasn’t been terrible, but I do miss being in a conference. I think there is more movement on the horizon with the P5 potential to split, what does that do for the G5 and how does that change people’s thinking with regards to geography? I’m not sure, but if you don’t have the same potential to make money, you have to figure out how to make the money you do have last.

I am impressed with the SBC, always have been. I think you all have made a lot of really great moves that may not have been huge moves in and of themselves. Collectively, they have mostly worked to move the league along. I love seeing it happen!!!

GO AGGIES!!!!

RE: OT: WAC Football Returning?
That's true....who knows where the college football landscape will be in 10 or even 5 years from now. When the WAC sponsored football in 2010 (they did through 2012) it was a totally different world out there. Look at the Sunbelt conference in 2010 as opposed to now as an example....Who would have thought that it would have lost so many teams to Conference USA and yet somehow turned out even better/superior by adding FCS startups like APP St, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, etc.? Unbelievable how quickly things have changed.

The WAC has a long history, even a national championship with BYU. Just about every G5 team west of the Mississippi River has spent time in the WAC.

Currently Boise is making noise, and unhappy with the MW. COVID is making for some unhappy schools dealing with the respected conference.

Well I did not believe it, but this article seems to indicate that there must be at least some fire to go along with the smoke. If not the Lamar AD would have called total BS.

RE: OT: WAC Football Returning?
The only thing I can make of this is that the schools in the new WAC might intend to pursue FBS membership and they know that could never happen in the Southland Conference. Otherwise the additional travel cost would make no sense at all for Sam Houston, SFA and Lamar. This might lead a place for NMSU to land since they are members of the conference in other sports?

Boise St and Idaho(if they want back in FBS) also may be interested.

The Boise part was sarcasm, they’d want AAC or indy before joining that version of the WAC.

Several things...

1) Once Chicago State is out of the league (probably around the time the new schools join), the Texas institutions are going to be able to limit their intra-conference games against the other division and play primarily against the TX schools in their division (six TX schools).

2) In football, you are looking at one flight per year (either SUU or Dixie State) - not much difference than what these school(s) do now outside of a possible guarantee. They'll be able to schedule the SLC schools for non-league games as those schools will prefer bus > air and need reasonably distanced home-and-homes.

3) Soccer and baseball are probably the trickiest of the sports. In softball and volleyball, you could easily do a round-up where the teams converge on one site (once in the west, once in the east) for games against the intra-division opponents over a weekend. You could make it where soccer does home-and-home against its division and then just plays a tournament with seeds based on divisional standings. Baseball, do you really want home-and-home against just division? Not sure.

4) Basketball can be home-and-home against division with a single game against the teams in the other division. The "travel partners" are pretty close in distance outside of Cal Baptist & Seattle.

All in all, travel does not bother me at all especially since the WAC teams (in Texas) will have the "new" Southland to play out of conference across all sports. The travel seems to be more of an excuse than anything for why this league will not. We should see significant improvement in basketball RPI and while it's a bit of a risk, I think a few of these schools have FBS aspirations. Whether it's easier to jump from the WAC to FBS as a league (apparently grandfathered in) or from the WAC to FBS (compared to the SLC) remains to be seen. That could just be one thing in the back of mind or not... time will tell.

The WAC does have a long storied history in FBS Football but one could argue that since 2012, they have little to no future regarding possible FBS aspirations. Not impossible but very very unlikely....at least not for 10 to 15 years if everything falls "perfectly" in place after having FCS Football restarted. Even then I doubt it. However, it very well could be a competitive FCS Football conference sooner rather than later if the 4 Southland Schools join with Southern Utah and one more school (Tarleton and Dixie State don't count as full fledged FCS teams yet...both in transition from D2 Fall 2020 and become Full FCS programs in Fall 2024). A conference needs 6 Full FCS classified Football schools to qualify with an auto-bid to FCS Playoffs. The question is who is the 6th FCS team because without that why would the 5 schools (4 FCS Texas and 1 FCS Utah) want to leave their respective league's without that auto-bid until 2024? There must be one more FCS team mulling the move. Otherwise, none of this makes current sense.

RE: OT: WAC Football Returning?
And the WAC saga continues...Stephen F. Austin has voted to join the WAC once terms are negotiated/agreed upon for 2022 membership.

https://www.ktre.com/2020/12/17/sfa-boar...onference/

SFA has been a member of the Southland Conference since 1987. The WAC is currently home to California Baptist, Chicago State, Dixie State, Grand Canyon University, New Mexico State, Seattle University, Tarleton State, UT Rio Grande Valley and Utah State. The move could bring football back to the WAC which has been missing since 2012.

Fellow Southland members Sam Houston State, Lamar and Abilene Christian are also rumored to be joining SFA in the negotiations to move.

Perhaps they will try to move football up to FBS when the next CFP contract comes out. If I remember correctly all they would need to sponsor FBS football is 7 football playing members to transition from FCS to FBS.

RE: OT: WAC Football Returning?
With all the unhappy CUSA talk, and the WAC seemingly bring back football. I could see in about 3 years some of those western CUSA teams don’t bail out and head back to the WAC. I say back, because many of them have been there before. That could make FBS WAC football look like this:

Abilene Christian
Lamar
Stephen F Austin
Sam Houston State
NMSU
UTEP
UTSA
Dixie St
Tarleton St
Southern Utah

2025 college football landscape will look very different.

*had to edit and add Southern Utah to the list.
