Why would UTEP and UTSA jump to this “proposed” WAC lineup of yours?

As bad as CUSA may be, it’s still better than the lineup you’ve proposed . . . Be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire, just don’t see either of those schools making such a patently stupid move.

Agreed...it makes no sense to jump backwards into a FCS WAC (even if they turned into an FBS WAC) for UTEP nor UTSA. It's not in their interests to shore up an FCS with hopes to be FBS WAC. Same goes for Texas State...they actually would like to be in the same conference as UTSA (and the other Texas teams in Conf-USA)....but not to jump backwards into this new WAC iteration. In fact, NMSU would still stay independent in football (while they are full members now in Oly sports)...until the WAC actually became FBS with ALL of its teams. But not a second before.

Re: the FBS talk - if the P5 splits for football only and the G5 start their own playoff/championship - the goal is to remain in the second tier and that's what I feel is part of the WAC "carrot" if you will. It's not 100% clear but hopefully will make more and more sense in the coming weeks when as soon as next week, we could see the announcement about the WAC.

And just for fun and because I am sure the San Marcos Bobcat fans would appreciate it for ole time sakes (hey CatMom!)... and if the Texas institutions and WAC rise to the levels of FBS (or this new tier), I don't think the league would want Texas State University - San Marcos. Outside of a QB transfer that infamously took a knee due to his inability to run a two-minute offense, when have they played meaningful and successful football? As is, the new WAC has to include New Mexico State. We do not need another have not. And anyone who thinks otherwise needs to remember that Larry Teis is the athletic director

Central Arkansas would have all sports in Atlantic Sun with football being exception, in Big South. The Big South has an agreement with the Atlantic Sun though we could soon see A-Sun football with some of the other shifts on the table.

That's just nuts. UTEP and UTSA will ABSOLUTELY NOT go FCS!! I'm an open-minded person and generally try to be congenial on here, but that's seriously one of the dumbest posts I've read in the time I've been on CSN.

That UTSA education is showing. Never said you would go FCS, this is an FBS WAC scenario. Learn to comprehend before responding.

So you're saying you believe the WAC will be FBS in 3 years? Again, no. And even if it did happen, UTSA and UTEP wouldn't agree to join them from C-USA anyway because that would still be a step down.

A lot will change over the next 4 years, I don’t know what will happen with the WAC. But a workable, FBS conference, is the one I listed. Didn’t say it would be likable, also didn’t say it would happen, just that it is schools(That are either currently FBS or seeming to position themselves to become FBS), in a geographical area that could make a future FBS conference in the event of a CUSA split.

But why is it assumed that these schools would be allowed to be FBS?

The NCAA can’t stop you from being FBS a long as you meet the requirements. Liberty showed that a couple years ago.

I honestly didn't read the first part of your post where you alluded to the 'FBS WAC'. I just saw a list of FCS schools with UTEP and UTSA included, so my apologies there. I don't know what sorts of changes happen over the next 3-4 years except that I hope C-USA steps up our game across all sports.

But while it might look as though it would be a nice fit geographically, I can tell you that UTSA and UTEP would no more want to be affiliated with what's essentially an entire conference of schools moving up than Texas State, UNT, Rice, or anyone else already in FBS would be. There's a huge difference between an established FBS conference taking in an FCS team moving up and teams already in FBS moving into an entire conference of FCS schools trying to move up to FBS. It's just a really bad look, and the perception - rightfully so - of those on the outside as well as those on the inside would be that it would be a step down.

I've followed UTSA Athletics since I first enrolled as a freshman at UTSA way back in the Fall of '84. I've also been a season ticket holder for football since our first season in 2011, as well as an athletic booster, and can tell you with almost 100% certainty that no one at any UTSA administrative level would go for such a scenario. I honestly don't even think that the UT Board of Regents would be a fan of one or more of the UT System schools in effect taking a step back rather than forward.

At any rate, sorry again for my initial overreaction at not having read the entire post and just glancing at the list of schools.

Agreed. This is prepositioning for the potential split in a few years during the next major TV negotiation. Also the haves and have nots of the SLC weren't going to last. I do feel for McNeese as they were once a power.

I would hope TXST would never join the WAC again. The SBC is a top tier G5 conference. I don't feel like downgrading. Get rid of Teis and get football playing better.

I am glad that a Bearkat and a Bobcat (and a Jaguar) could agree on something. I would be curious what arkst thinks of the forthcoming changes. Feel we have been talking about these things for a decade now but it seems closer and closer now than it has in some time.

Similar to the conversation about another tier forming, haven't the Bobcats been talking about getting rid of Teis for at least a decade?

The G5 is going to be changing itself. I am not sure what will happen but a conference like CUSA from El Paso to Charlotte seems ridiculous when the TV revenue is not there. I guess the same can be said about from San Marcos to Conway. The "trade" and merger/split talks of new C-USA and Sun Belt have been happening for years too. Will COVID and new CFP negotiations shake anything up?

Will COVID and new CFP negotiations shake anything up?

He has been here since 2002 I think. I started following in 2003. I have been over Teis since at least when Bailiff was gone after 2005 and he hired Wright. Plus mens basketball was a disaster back then and those coaches got extensions. I would not mind seeing SHSU back on the schedule. It has been a long time since we battled the Kats.

This is it. The P5 is going to break away, the top of the FCS wants to stay in the second tier, which is what the G5 will become, instead of going third tier, which is what the FCS will become. The top of FCS is going to jump into the G5 lineup, or at least that is what they are going to try to do.

Pubic perception, this has already happened. FCS is considered 3rd level DI.

Also when/if major changes happen some will be left with alternatives not to their liking. Some will be in a conference with someone they dont desire, probably most. The money gap is getting so wide this thing could come down to less than a P5 many be P3 or P4 and the G will grow.

Sources: The WAC plans to announce on Jan. 14 at NRG Stadium in Houston the formation of its FCS league, which starts play in football in 2022. The initial 7 WAC members: Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin. Southern Utah, Tarleton State and Dixie State.

The WAC is expected to add two more schools in the coming months. There’s a mix of DII and current FCS institutions being vetted by commissioner Jeff Hurd. The long-term goal of the league is to elevate the WAC back to FBS football later this decade.

That’s the million dollar question. Is it a P5 break away or the “Super Conference” creation. Super Conferences have been discussed since the 70’s, Bear Bryant even talked about them. Do the big schools bring along the Vandy’s, Kansas and Purdue’s of the world, or leave them behind??? And remember, this is purely a football breakaway, not all sports.
